I can truly say that if that was Anders real morph in this game that I would have NO trouble killing him at the end.

Oh, what an awful way to go to bed.

Sometimes they make it so damn _hard_ to just... click that little icon.

I have a habit of saving my game in a new slot if I know I'm going to make a decision I'll hate later, but need to make anyway. Then I can always go back to the other one if I feel like it and say, "See, it's all still okay!"

It's a goofy coping mechanism, but it works.

if you're goofy, so am i. my poor xbox harddrive is full to bursting with fifteen billion save files that are pretty much just variations on"Save 2XX - Darktown" or "Save 2XX - Anders' Clinic" because i just want to have the files ~ready so i can hypothetically play through nicer choices because i am the biggest baby.

as for mods, the only ones i can even stomach are clothing mods, though i feel like most people don't do it out of desire to have characters not smell but because they just don't like the outfits, which feels sort of like just a step down from changing their faces, since costume is such a characterization consideration.

I have 500 saves in my canon file alone.

I saved before every convo, choice, and big combat area.
On the plus side I never had to go back far in case of crashes/party wipe

I always felt that thing about rivalry relationships in DA (for everyone, but particularly Anders) is that they're all talk, no action, and that's why they're still a form of relationship instead of the termination of that relationship. Gaining rivalry points with Fenris is a very different thing than actually turning him over to Danarius. When you are earning rivalry points, it means you are still loyal to the character, and they are still loyal to you, despite your disagreements.

When I wrote rival Hawke, I was imagining her gnashing her teeth in frustration that Anders can't see the mess he's made of his life, and he's just as frustrated that she can't see that he's in the right about it. She tries to shock him out of his acceptance of what he's become to force him to see that Justice has corrupted him (and ultimately succeeds when they split sufficiently for Justice to just take over and do the bombing, albeit not in a way that ends up benefiting anyone). Anders, for his part, recognizes that for all that Hawke says, she's saying it out of concern for him, since if she really just saw him as unsaveable, she would turn him over to the templars. It's certainly not a healthy relationship, but it's definitely a dynamic that exists in real life (granted, in real life, they've usually had time to build a foundation of that relationship *before* the crazy starts, but I thought it was at least a dynamic some people would relate to).

P.S. I love that 2000+ pages later, you guys are still actually talking about the character. Thanks for all the love.

Given how fast this thread moves, I'm sure I missed the bandwagon here, but I just wanted to say I found this really interesting. I've always friendmanced Anders, the rivalry just felt too uncaring, but this makes me see it's a lot more complicated. I think I'll stick to friend though.

Thought I'd share a commission I did with the Anders thread

This is Tyrium's Rhiannon Hawke with Anders. I started out with the picture being a little sad/bitter-sweet but I'm glad Tyrium requested it to be a happier picture. I like drawing happy mages really :D

Well.. in the interest of something new to talk about...

So, I was playing Legacy last night and ran across a dialog between Varric and Anders that made me scratch my head. Apparently, Anders owes Fenris money from losing to him at Wicked Grace and is paying in installments. LOL

Now... that's not usually something you do for your mortal enemy... allow an installment plan, I mean, right? Nor would you sound amused when recounting said debt to another friend.

I doubt this means they're best buddies, but they're less hostile than we might think, maybe. I also don't know if this dialog is Legacy specific.

Sometimes, when a man and his Spirit friend decide they care about ending mage slavery together very, very much...

Wait. I think this is the wrong talk.

Yes, it's Legacy-specific. And it only occurs if Anders isn't romanced. If he's romanced, it's a comment about him thinking Hawke is cute.

There's this nice banter from Legacy, also:

ANDERS: When I left the Wardens, I swore I'd never spend another minute in the Deep Roads.
FENRIS: "Left" sounds like it was a mutual arrangement.
ANDERS: Fine. I ran away. What's it to you?
FENRIS: Ran away from the Circle, ran away from the Wardens... it sounds like a habit.
[Pre-'Alone']
ANDERS: And you ran away from Danarius. Maybe we're more alike than you think.
[Post-'Alone']
ANDERS: Running away from your family, straight to Danarius. Running away from Danarius, straight to Hawke. Maybe we're more alike than you think.
[If Varric is in the party]
VARRIC: I've always said so.

I never thought they were mortal enemies locked in undying hatred. Just two people with opposing beliefs who are very set in their ways and refuse to budge, and each thinks the other is a moron for not budging.

I love that banter. It's a pity you only get it when Anders is unromanced. I think I actually prefer it to what a romanced Anders says. Sure, it's adorable when Anders says that Hawke is cute, but I like the ambiguity it throws on Anders's relationship with Fenris.

I kind of took it as a "friend of a friend" situation. Anders and Fenris are thrown together even if neither of them really wants it. To pass the time, they sometimes play cards together. They might just put up with it because it's better than sitting home alone, but the fact is that one way or another, they're in this together. That's probably why Fenris extends credit to Anders. He knows that Anders is not going to skip town on him, not while Hawke is there.

Does anybody remember the movie "Grumpy Old Men"? I kind of see a card game between Anders and Fenris going like that. And an old, familiar enemy is almost like a friend, in some ways.

I would not imagine Anders and Sebastian sitting down to cards together. Fenris is willing to live in Anders's world, if that makes sense. He has an adversarial role in it, but he is there nonetheless. They don't want to admit it, but on some level, they do understand each other. Sebastian and Anders just don't get each other, nor do Sebastian and Fenris. Sure, Fenris shows Sebastian less hostility than Anders does, but Anders has his own agenda and Sebastian has nothing to do with it. For his part, Sebastian does try to be nice to both Anders and Fenris, but he's talking to them from a different world and they know it.

Or maybe I'm just full of it.

No, I think I agree with you, Berelinde. I'd heard about the Hawke's cute dialog, but didn't know about this one. Glad I took my Fenris Hawke on Legacy first.

When a fairly sizable group of people (who all have varying degrees of acquaintance or friendship with each other) coexists in a fairly small area together, they do have to learn to play nice pretty quickly, or else things get _really_ messy, really fast. And you learn to discover which people you can tolerate pretty quickly.
Or you just start a knitting circle where everyone gossips about everyone else behind their backs.

Anders and Fenris do have mutual hatreds of some things. Blood magic, and demons, for example. So they're not always talking at completely cross-purposes. Sometimes they're just too damn stubborn to realize it. And I think that during those times when they're not both going out all guns-blazing with their respective idealistic hatreds, they can get along well enough to do things like play cards together.

Are they going to have slumber parties? No. But sometimes you have to find ways to pass the time without wanting to kill each other.

I've mentioned that dialogue before. I used it to support my argument that they do see each other as human from time to time, but that doesn't bridge the gap between them, or make them any less likely to be knowingly cruel towards one another.

Oh, definitely.

There's still the unmistakable fact that they can't reconcile their differences about the one thing that's most important to Anders -- mage freedom.

It just makes living with the frustration a little more bearable.

Rofl, Zevran is my hero. "yo hawke, let's do it."

anders & fenris: "WHAT THE....?!? back off tiny assassin ho man or I will crush you beneath glowing blue lights."

Zevran: "woah, we're cool guys." ahaha Zevran. He's great. You know, what does Merrill say in that scene? Haha. Can only imagine sweet little Merrill conjuring up some wrist slitting blood magic. I forget if she's just appalled or kind of pissed in that scene..don't recall what she says.

Before the proposition comes up though, if you have them both in the party, they look at him and look at each other with such identical expressions of disgust, I laughed my ass off.

Poor Zev.

I'm a bit ahead of you there. Don't have anything above 2k though. xD

I can check the numbers when I get back home, but I've got around 1300 on my mage, 1500 on my warrior, and around 600 on my archer who I'm not done with yet.

I obsessively save so I can rewatch scenes and safegaurd my progress against game crashes. :?

Once I get my new laptop in a couple weeks though, hopefully that won't be a problem.

I hate 99% of the morphs people do of the characters.
