I don't hate Anders. He's my 3rd favorite companion (could have been better though sadly, imo), and the only thing I thought was redeeming in Act 3. I think he is short sighted, mentally ill and very reckless there, but I don't hate him.

I feel much the same way...I love Anders as a character, but I don't support what he does at all.  I can have characters romance him, befriend him, and spare him at the end, but that doesn't stop Real Me from thinking that he's beyond help by the end of the third act.

I would feel a lot better about the end of DA2 if there was even a glimmer of hope for Anders.  As it is, it's just terribly depressing.

Yeah it was just so fitting. I really do love aggresive!Hawke, it fits the rivalmance well. Actually I find the aggressive Hawke lines a bit less trollish than the humorous options to Anders.

Though I doubt he will be back in any significant way seeing how he can be confirmed dead (unless retcon), his possible participation in the war might give him the sense of purpose and belonging, and make it less depressing.

I think the opposite is more likely to happen and that he'll get worse during the war (I am making it worse aren't I?) and I do believe that the point of the romance is depression, but many seem to think that there is hope.
