Yeah, you have basically to metagame a lot and choose who you want to take on quest to maximize your rivalry/friendly meter. I I had a lot of problems with Isabela to be honest the first time, since I basically never used her in party.maxernst wrote...

Sure, you can go down the rivalry path and still side with the mages IN THE END. But to oppose him, you have to speak against mages more than once. It would be a little strange to suddenly side with them at the very end. What I felt important was to express my activley pro-mage stance throughout the game, and yet oppose Anders way of doing things. Sure, some options that we are given point in that direction, but it doesn't feel like a thorough standpoint which one can follow through wholely.
That's one of my problems with the whole rivalry mechanic. The game essentially penalizes you with disloyal companions for taking moderate stances, while rewarding you if you consistently act in direct opposition to the character's wishes.
But, back to the point.
Yes, you have to speak against mages sometimes. But to be honest there are some cases where speak against them is just common sense (especially for a non-mage Hawke imo). Especially Grace, to name one.
I did just one playthrough rivaling Anders, and it was really good. I just sent Grace and Feynriel to the Circle, which doesn't change much. By the start of Act2 I could do whatever I wanted, Anders is extremely easy to ****** off or please.
Side with them at the end anyway for me was more a "I don't want to slaughter people just because Meredith wants to". I could even feel sorry somehow for the templars I was killing.
I cannot see the final decision as a "stand with the mages or templars" one. There my Hawke is just protecting people, as she/he tried to do the whole time. We all know Hawke had a bad luck with it, but oh well, she/he kept trying.
