I shall reserve judgement as well, but I actually liked the DLC look. It seems that Tallis is actually going to be an enjoyable character. However, I do hope that it isn't so centered on this new "companion" that all the old companions get the shaft. I am going to be PEEVED if Tallis takes up a companion slot or something. Or all the cutscenes are Tallis this.. Tallis that.

I am going to have to peeve you then - Tallis will be taking up a companion slot.

As far as I know. And I know lots of things. Except for my feelings on this DLC, that is - I know I'm being unfair, but I'm getting a wee bit of a Sue-vibe from Tallis.

I'll still buy it. I mean, Orlais and Orlesian dresses and Orlesian parties and Orlesian cheese? And Orlesian dresses? Hawke, baby, you've never looked better. Count me in!

I just worry it will be too much about HER and not about her character, if that makes sense?

That was kind of what I was driving at. Tallis is her "standard" character, so to me, it looks like an adventure created to give HER the opportunity to shine, not necessarily a new playground for our companions to enjoy. Like many of you, I enjoyed how companions bantered with each other and with Hawke in Legacy. My fear is that in this one, the banter will be focused on NPCs relationship with Tallis to the exclusion of anyone else.

@PuppyFlavour: You aren't the only one getting the Sue vibe, and I greet the news that she'll be taking up a party slot with great dismay. That said, Hawke does look utterly hot in his finery. Wonder what Marian's will look like.

I found it on the twitter but I'm pretty sure there is something on the main page about it as well. Shouldn't have to venture farther than google and

"Dragon Age 2 : Mark of the Assassin"

I will kick something.... Tallis takes up a companion slot.. I BETTER BE ABLE TO BRING 3 MORE PEOPLE THEN. *grumble grumble*

Ah yes, I found it, thanks! Here is the trailer if anyone else missed it.

Seeing this, I'm now super conflicted. I feel like I'm being a bit unfair, because if it wasn't Tallis and just some unknown VA or whatever I wouldn't be so wary about it. But I definitely am also getting the Sue vibe and I'm just afraid of that really ruining the experience.

Basically, this:

But...but...Orlais!

I guess we can watch the Q&A session on the BioWare channel at 1. I'm going to watch.

This is a major failing of mine, and I know it, but I am a lot more harsh and judgmental toward female NPCs than I am toward the boys. I know it isn't fair. With DA2's females not provoking any eye-rolling at all, I thought that maybe I was past it, but I'm starting to think that maybe they were simply well-written enough and balanced enough not to steal the spotlight from the other NPCs or from Hawke. Now that I see the FD trailer, it's all coming back to me, and I find myself thinking "Oh, dear. It's going to be the Tallis show, isn't it?" Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. We'll see.

Edit: And yeah, sorry for the off-topicness of a lot of my posts today. It's just that this is probalby the one thread on the forum where one can go to escape the... well, you know.

@berelinde, are you sure it is not because it is Felicia's character so it feel a little like look at the celebrity, because I know that is how I feel. I already rue the fact that people would want her back in da3 as an love interest. I know i hated Isabella to start with just because people was like (Gosh Isabella is so awesome), she has finally started to grow on me, but now I dislike Aveline instead.

I am, however, very much looking foreward to an Orlesian party and I hope a for silly dress for my femhawke that she will just hate to wear. And cheveliers. I am so exicited to finally see cheveliers.

varric is already a sue though Posted Image

I'm not bothered by an NPC taking a spotlight for once though. This sounds fine to me, but I'm pretty easy to please.
I'm also one who definitely wouldn't mind more Leliana.

EDIT

The most important part of this new DLC. Bioware hasn't been listening.

why doesn't manhawke have a dress festooned with ruffles?

Yes, and when I heard Tallis's personality described as a cross between Varric and Isabela, I imagined the worst.

Varric escapes the Sue Doom because he is telling Hawke's story. Everything he does says makes Hawke look good (or bad). Also, he's a dwarvn bard. How can you beat that? With Tallis, I'm afraid that she's going to steal the spotlight like Varric but do it by behaving like a larger-than-life Isabela. There, I said it. I love Isabela. I really do. And that's surprising because I came out of the demo absolutely loathing her with a passion reserved only for teenage boyfriend-stealers. The thing that changed my mind about her was that yeah, she's all about the sex, but she *can't* get any guy she wants, she *does* get an embarrassing infection, and she devotes a lot of time and love into making Merrill and even Aveline feel more self-confident. BioWare can't drink from that well again, so how are they going to redeem Tallis? Pardon the pun.

Actually, if I find out that she does hit on the LI, it would make me more likely to buy it. There is something embarrassingly cathartic about allowing yourself to unabashedly detest a fictional character. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Anders Always Loves Hawke. Try as she might, Anders will never even know she's there. Kinda takes the fun out of it, in a way. You don't get to have the "I saw you looking at her!" glare-fests afterwards. You know, the one where the lover falls all over himself apologizing for having a sex drive. I think there's something wrong with my brain today.

Oh, sure. So long as the companions have banter with each other as well as Tallis, I won't mind her. At all. Felicia Day voiced another character I'm very fond of, so.

And a hundred times yes to the last part. The pixel crush I have on Leliana is shameless, I tell you.

Calling Varric a sue? Really? GTFO.

God damn it people, Sue originally had a specific definition, and people are just starting to apply it to any character who is awesome. Are we not allowed to have awesome characters anymore? Inherent in someone's classification as a Sue is that they are poorly written, to the point that their "awesomeness" is either obnoxious or unbelievable.

Kids today don't understand anything about culture.

As long as we're in Orlais, I wish to see her in some of those epic shoes she talked about in Origins.

Much agreed.

I have a lot of feelings on the issue of Mary Sues and how the term has been widely applied so much that term has begun to lose significant meaning.  Instead of posting a long winded word salad rantnalysis about it, I'll just post a link to these two posts that address issue in a more eloquent and more coherent manner than I ever could.  A blog post by Sarah Rees Brennan (whose journal I've followed since her days in the HP fandom) is the first and you can read it here and her subsequent link to a YA author I don't know much about, but still enjoyed the post quite a bit.

They're both excellent and highly recommended.

Hmm... I always imagine Orlais to be less forest-like.
In real life I don't care much about what I wear, but in dragon age I for some reason wants my Hawke to wear the latest Orlesian fashion to this partyPosted Image I blame Leliana...

The description does say a Baron's estate, so that could be why it looks like it's out there, with all the trees and little dragon creatures and what have you.

So typical Orlesian to keep dragon like pet monsters.
I wonder if the Li's will have specific banters again. I hope it... I really enjoyed legacy's banter.

It's really only going through the same phenomenon as other "trendy" terms.

Like "emo".

Or "whiny".

Or even "tragic".

There comes a point where the term gets used and abused, and comes to mean things that are very different from what it originally designated. Most frequently though, people will simply find a way to apply it to characters they don't like. Just as those posts you mentioned point out.
