Sebastian is looming over your shoulder the whole time you are talking with Anders, after he blows up the chantry. He practically right on top of you. Everyone else knows to go away but he clearly can't take a hint. For a chaste Prince he certainly has no sense of personal space.

I'm pretty sure Jennifer Hepler wrote Sebastian, it bewilders me that she can write my one of my most beloved and one of my most hated companions. And while I'd really like to say I don't like him because he's "preachy", Anders is just as preachy with his mage talk. Sebastian is a pretty intresting and decent character, if you think about him for a while. That doesn't mean I'm going to bring him around everywhere I go or try to hate him less...

So I basically have no reason to hate Sebastian, other than he has Andraste's face on his crotch, which is reason enough for me.

What's funny is that fact for all his preachiness he's a horrible priest. He has so qualms about killing people so long as it's under the umbrella of justice.

And I noticed the personal space thing too. Even when you're romancing him he'll never touch you but he will still stand an inch from you and hover his hand over your shoulder. So odd.

I didn't see it as that bad. Regardless of how you come to get rivalry with Anders, from the dialogue it seems like you don't have a problem with Circles but you can tell him that you agree with his cause but not his methods which would also cause friction. It doesn't mean that they hate each other or anything like that and my Hawke would definitely not stick around for mere animal attraction or co-dependency given how difficult the relationship ALWAYS is even if you're the world's biggest supporter of mage rights and thinks merging with Justice was the best idea Anders ever had.

I know what you're saying, and rationally, you're probably right. I was speaking more from what I was feeling as I watched the whole thing unfold. I started the character in question specifically because I wanted to see the rivalry romance path with Anders and how it played out, so maybe that's the problem; I wasn't as invested in her from a story perspective so much as an experimental standpoint.

She was a mage as well, which added an extra dimension of tension between the two. There are finite conversations you can have with any of the characters in-game, and in the Rivalry romance path, during at least 3 of them Anders makes some off-handed comment that involves killing you.  By the time Act 3 rolled around, I personally just could see no good reason why these two people would stay together when they seemed to have zero common ground between them, unless there was some utterly base and selfish attraction. It felt angry, dirty and cheap, and like I could have picked up something healthier from the Blooming Rose.

I think I couldn't bring myself to build a Hawke that disagrees THAT much with Anders. Especially a mage.  The best I managed was a peace-loving rogue who just wants all these people to be SANE.  In the end she goes with Meredith because maybe it will stop a war in its infancy (it doesn't, but that isn't Hawke's fault is it?).  Even my rogue templar sider (in the end) could not disagree THAT much with Anders.  She agreed Kirkwall was insane and something needed to be done, just did not like his methods.  And I wasn't going to try and romance him with my rogue... they got along mostly and he was sad as hell at the end when we had to fight-on!... alas, I cannot fathom trying to romance someone who is so for the cause and you're... well... not.

A question for the thread: Would your Hawke ever offer to be a vessel for J/V, in order to free Anders of his influence?

Knowing full well ahead of time that it's a deal with the devil, that J/V could change unpredictably, and he could change Hawke unpredictably, but Anders would be completely free of his influence. Would your Hawke do it, even if Anders protested?
What if the deal had the potential to make Hawke more powerful, whether as a mage or a more physical class?

Most likely not. He's not a very good martyr.

Though. If he felt it was something that needed to be done (say, Anders is out of commision at the mo', there's something big and bad they're fighting while on the run, and Jutsice gives the option), then it'd be much more possible.

Being possessed is a big weakness, but so is death. I'm just sayin'.

Totally off discussion, since my brain won't process more sad, I wonder if Justice remembers the Warden-Commander at all? I'm imagining Anders and my Warden running into each other and Justice being all "I recall liking this one. We should keep it." and poor Hawke being bummed that the spirit possessing his/her boyfriend prefers someone else.

Huh. Canon playthrough probably wouldn't. She doesn't really resent Justice, but she doesn't see how taking J/V from Anders would make the situation any better, although she loves Anders very much.

I say probably, because when my Hawke gets desperate enough, she'll try anything.

I have a feeling this has something to do with the way that specializations are selected, perhaps in a way that game mechanics won't allow you to check. This is just a guess, mind, I don't know if that's true.

Also, with skill reset items (Maker's Sigh), there's no guarantee that a Hawke who uses blood magic will stay as a blood mage - or you might take the blood mage specialization and never actually use any blood magic. From a gameplay perspective, it's tricky.

Oh, I understand why they couldn't necessarily do it through existing game mechanics, but based on Anders' furious reaction to Merrill's blood magic, I think having a series of convos where Hawke is a blood mage could even open up an alternate rivalmance, where instead of Anders wildly trying to convince Hawke to support the mages, he's trying to get her to stop sullying the name of mages everywhere by using blood magic.

That would be perfect!  Except my blood mage is so NOT romancing Anders.  She admires him, but thinks just what his reaction would be if he realized his LOVER is a freaking blood mage.
Poor Anders, I just can't do it to him.

I don't know that he'd prefer my canon Warden over Hawke. Though a bit self righteous herself, she considered Justice a stick in the mud. My Warden always brought Anders, Nate and Sigrun with her to provide laughs. Although, current Justice might like her since the Warden also killed Templars for Anders. :P

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  This is funny, but I doubt it'd be his reaction.  I imagine him going all Vengeance and yelling "YOU STUPID GIRL, WHAT DID YOU DO!"

(I wish he would call Hawke little girl or whatever more often, not just when you threaten him... I think I should replay that part with all my characters and ****** him off just to hear him say that!!)

Sounds like something Shale would say. xD

Anyway, if that were to happen in Kaya's playthrough, I think it would be confusing for everyone around and a bit heartbreaking, but still kind of funny to me. The Warden whose import went into Kaya's playthrough is a slightly different version of her, named Kaia. They're the same in almost every way. If Justice liked Kaia and not Kaya, she would be pretty upset. Kaia would be a little annoyed because she liked both of them, and Kaya's the one who got to romance them. And there's no way they'd both agree to be in that relationship together (at least not at the same time).

And I am pretty sure my warden would not be interested in some romance with Justice or Anders. She had enough of puppy sad eyes from Alistair over the Zevran thing, she cannot break that man's heart. That goofy goofy doll.

Mind you, Anders was so hilarious in Awakenings, he gave Alistair a run for his money.

Oh, now I've thought about it. Wil would do it, if only because she's That Person who thinks she can shoulder everyone's burdens, but rarely gets the chance because well, it's hard for someone to give you magic or the taint or death by ogre. She's a well-adjusted Hawke, considering, and definitely not someone who harbors deep rage for anyone or anything so she would assume that Justice would find little inside of her to feed off of or twist.

I have been lurking the forums.... and this might sound harsh but I'm starting to believe that killing Anders is the "best" choice, atleast for him so he stops suffering. But oh god, either choice is sooooooo depressing.

Poor Anders.

As Anders' foil, he's probably also in love with Hawke no matter what.  Even if he prefers to remain celibate in the friendmance.

I do not think Margaret would be a good choice to shelter Justice.  The depths of anger and bitterness in that woman might rival Anders'.  So no, even if she wanted to, she shouldn't.  Plus, separating them now is a bad idea.  As Marethari says, he'd be scarred and ripe for the picking of anything worse that came along.

It's the best choice to free a spirit?

Nope.  Let him live and let him see what his Justice wrought.

Just because Anders himself doesn't know a way doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't a way. NPCs aren't all knowing...

It's too much what he expected to happen.

>.>

Personally, my Hawke couldn't kill him. Not just because he was rather fond of him (which he was, in his "never making huge declerations of love" way), but also because you don't allow people that plan their own deaths to die. Anders planned a grand story for himself; he'd do something drastic and give up his life in the fight. It was too clean, and clean endings like that just -- make the legends worse.
