So this is really random, but when Anders was in solitary, that was in the circle right? I mean they didn't send him to the Mage prison for that did they? Because all I can think of is the scar that would leave on him; not like being in solitary wouldn't leave one anyhow.

Being and having dylsexica isn't easy to have. You just have to learn how to deal with and live with it.

Pretty sure it was the Circle, yeah. I got the impression Aeonar wasn't a place you could just leave after a year. Besides, Anders sounded like he got some preferential treatment from Irving or Greagoir (or both). Because simply bringing him back to the Circle after seven escape attempts sounds remarkably lenient.
Then again, isn't Lily sentenced to Aeonar in the Magi Origin in DAO, even though she's not even a mage? I get that that's probably because Jowan was a blood mage, but it still feels a little odd, in hindsight: one escape attempt for a non-mage, and it's Aeonar straight off the bat? Hmm.
A question on a different topic: is it even possible to rivalmance Anders while being pro-mage? I'm tentatively considering drumming up the courage for a rivalmance at some point, but I'm not exactly sure where the rivalry points would be coming from, since most of his approval revolves around mages. Besides, doesn't his rivalry dialogue assume you're anti-mage?

Not nessisarly. A big chunk of the purple line remarks are anti-justice (rather then anti-mage). and even if they're delivered as half-jokes, he takes them the wrong way and the red points go-a-running ;p

Aha, ok, good to know. It's true that I tried to take the purple path through his post-Tranquility dialogue out of curiosity once, and it did end up in rivalry, even though it was only a measly +5. So trolling my way through should work...

Lol, yes, I had the exact same reaction: "Hey...whoa, there, buddy, WHOA!"
I was also surprised at the fact that he actually puts on the moves (with a really cheesy pickup line, no less) if you don't do it first...and then gets cranky if you turn him down (I was experimenting with a Fenmancing Hawke). Having a bit of trouble making up your mind there, Andy? Although, to be fair, Hawke isn't exactly very diplomatic with the turndown...but still.

Oh...so he does assume you're anti-mage? You can't just play it as anti-Justice? Dangit...

Hang on...I'm now confused...Didn't you say you abandoned your rivalmance because the dialogue assumed you were anti-mage? Or did I not understand your first post?Lady Jess wrote...

Yeah, if you pick the diplomatic line after he apologizes for talking about Justice, it goes something like this (this is from memory, so it's not an exact quote):
Hawke: We can't always foresee the outcomes of our choices, we can only make them with a true heart.
Anders: Kind, wise and beautiful. *sly, suggestive look* You must have made a deal with some demons yourself. *pause* I'm sorry, I shouldn't presume...We've barely met, and I feel like I know you. Does that make you uncomfortable?
(version 1)
Hawke: Keep telling me I'm beautiful. You can't go wrong with that.
Anders: Oh, I'm sure I can be more elaborate. *continue with normal "but no, you've seen what I am, etc."*
(version 2)
Hawke: Doesn't mean that I want you to stop...
Anders: I'll keep that in mind. *continue with normal, "but no, etc."*
(version 3, turndown)
Hawke: I don't want you thinking about me that way.
Anders: Everyone wants to control my thoughts...Fine. Strictly professional, I get it. *annoyed tone, and you eat +5 rivalry*

I got a few of those Anders flirt lines. On my rivalmage I did it.. I lead him on. Only because my rivalmage is an evil, horrible person, but oh so fun to play. She did the "keep telling me I'm beautiful" then rolled her eyes at the "you've seen what I am.." LOL.
My others turned him down either gently or flat out, and didn't try to lead him on.
I dislike the rivalry thing in one aspect, and that is no matter how you rival a companion they automatically play out their dialogue like you are the opposite views from them. Fenris thinks your all pro-slavery and pro-mage freedom. Anders thinks you are anti-mage and pro Templar. It doesn't matter how you do it.. they always tend to get polarized responses based on friendship/rivalry.

I haven't actually found a way of turning him down gently...It seems you either go along with his flirts, then take his "I'll hurt you" at face value and don't flirt with him again, or you eat the +5 rivalry for turning him down.
I took the troll's way out and picked the purple lines with my Fenmancing Hawke. "Creepy" and then "You're glowing again". I still ate +5 rivalry, but there was no flirting at all.

If you avoid all the other heart options, pick that diplo option that makes him flirt with Hawke, and then pick that "Doesn't mean that I want you to stop." (I think that's "it's unexpected" on the wheel), that doesn't actually activate the romance. Then you won't hear anymore from the romance as long as you don't pick hearts in Act 2.

That "but no.." drives me batty a bit. I really prefer pairing him up with M!Hawke - then, this conversation turns really awkward.
"Maybe I let you consider it... in as much detail as you fancy" ftw.
My jaw dropped when I heard it for the first time.. this guy really didn't changed (aside from having a diffrent voice actor, and a spirit of extremism in his head).

Dunno, I didn't find anything wrong with the F!Hawke version. It sounds like Anders is getting carried away with flirting, then reason kicks in at the last moment, and he backs off. It does make sense, considering that he did go into semi-involuntary Justice mode not long before: it's perfectly understandable that he'd be concerned about being a liability.
M!Hawke's version sounds rather outrageous, lol. Does he never express any concerns about Justice with an M!Hawke then?
But yeah, Anders is really not all that different from his Awakening self: he still has both the kinky and the snarky streak.

Maybe "outrageous" - but I like it better.
He flirts a bit then backs off, mentions Karl, gets angry about the situation of mage's, and goes all Justice. Flirting is casual and awkward as hell.
He does express his concern for M!Hawke, but there is no "No! I break your heart!" - he either doesn't believe in Hawke's stuborness in trying to get into his pants, or he thinks a guy can handle this mess better, but still, he doesn't want to bring this all on friend's head.
He's overprotective of Fem!Hawke which has it charm, I don't doubt that. There was a theory, that he broke some hearts by the way, while being an apostate on the run, and now his conscience combined with his self-loathing is eating him alive - and that's the reason for the "I break your heart, women" thing.
