I'm pretty sure he knows it -- more than likely it just is something he keeps very close or more than likely blocks out because it isn't who he is anymore.

Frederick... heh... yeah there are some theories out there. A lot of them make sense, actually.

Still... didn't he choose Anders? I would think he chose that name for personal reasons and maybe no reason at all, but over time it really became who he was. The other person is gone, or hidden, and he doesn't feel like it is something anyone should know. Even Hawke. Mostly because it isn't relevant to who he is.

The name is in reference of his family being from the Anderfels but I have no idea if he gave himself the name or not.

I think using his personal name was too painful for him as it reminded him of the time he was with his mother - after all he was dragged away with his mother screaming, most probably his name. Or maybe when he arrived at the Circle they asked his name and he just refused to tell them - so they called him Anders and he just went with it, then after a time he just felt it fitted with what he was. May be he would only take back his real name after mages are truly free.

After all Fenris discovers his real name is Leto and yet doesn't want to be called that, even though Fenris is his slave name and was given to him by Denarius. However it is also the name associated with being free and the name by which his friends know him.

As far as Anders real name, I'd love to find out. I do agree that he doesn't use it because it's too painful.

Probably because the local Circles were full, or he came later when the circle was in need of some new students. The Ferelden circle was probably  in transition after the changing of hands (moved orlesian first enchanter OUT etc) and the extra room that the Anderfel Circle didn't have.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's said he was from the Anderfels, not that he was necessarily living there when he was taken.
