Its interesting though - I'm on my 4th full playthrough (have had a few abandoned ones too...) and am still finding places/quests I didn't even know existed!! I know people say the game is short but with such replayability its easy to get 100s of hours of interesting play out of it. :)

I do have an Anders related question though - is it possibly to have a purely physical relationship with him? My current Hawke is planning on getting with everyone he can, but because Anders gets really upset when you 'reject him' and tell him the night together didn't mean anything I don't want it to go that far if he's all heartbroken etc afterwards?

No. If you're spending the night together it means something for Anders. (It is the same with Merrill, btw). If you sleep through all four characthers either Anders or Merrill will get hurt (depending on which one you break up with and which one you stay with).

Cool - thanks hon. Might just stick to Fenris and Isabella.... I can't bring myself to hurt Anders. Last playthrough when I friendmanced him I did a save and tried out all the dialogue options when he turns up at the estate. The ones where you sleep with him then tell him to go away are pretty damn heartbreaking. But I didn't know if those were always the options, or only there if he's the only one you romance IYKWIM?

The first dialogue options do appear different if you had a
previous relationship with someone else. After sleeping with Anders, the
options in the dialogue wheel are the same no matter what you chose in the
previous dialogue wheel.

And I never had the courage to load a previous save and mess
around with the dialogue, such as breaking up with Anders. I saw it on YouTube
and that is enough for me. Just too heart breaking to bare doing it myself for
curiosity purposes.

Aah, yes, I still remember that one time when after 2 or 3 Anders friendmances I decided to do a rivalmance to liven things up a bit... I made an agressive!warrior!Hawke for that very purpose, he was such a douche - rivaled pretty much everyone... I still liked him, though.
Anyway, I got as far as the Act 1 Gallows courtyard, where I told Cullen how 'the Templars did good work', or some such, and Anders went all 'how can you say that in front of me?!'... aaand then it was frantically helping every mage in Kirkwall and their dog do their laundry to build those friendship points back up before Act 2...

I'm doing a Isabela/Fenris playthrough just now and the scene where he tells Anders he just wants to keep it professional was actually not that harsh...it's after he flirts with him the first time and then goes back towards the end of Act 1. The heartbreak option doesn't give any rivalry points which I was worried about... He just says something like 'yes, of course' and doesn't even sound sad when he does...

The first thing I do when I get on my computer is to get on this thread because Anders is wonderful. I never liked a character as much as I have liked Anders.

Oh hun, I am in the same boat you are. Played so many games over the years and I have to say while I liked some characters, I never have liked one so much as I do Anders. No doubt, my husband will soon become jealous.

I wonder if Mr. Gaider will be willing to write a book on Anders prior to Amaranthine. I would buy that in a second.

That's because the thread is possessed by af Spirit of Understanding. It's is such a shy kind of spirit that the fewest ever get to meet it, not to say encounter it in others.

I think Anders and Fenris really represent the two distinct kinds of guys. Anders is the traditional 'I will love you forever and you'll be my everything' whereas Fenris is really the 'Meh, maybe if I act all standoffish she'll eventually decide she wants me' type. xD

I can't decide who I like more actually... I really like Anders but find it really difficult to get over what he does to the Chantry. I sort of didn't have issues with it til I downloaded Sebastians DLC and he says 'if it had been me in the Chantry would you still be discussing this' or words to that effect. It made me realise that, no I probably wouldn't. So I've tried to steer clear of getting to emotionally attached since then. ;)

Well, I gotta admit the only issue I had with Anders' actions was that he didn't allow my Hawke to actively help... But I understand why he didn't so no biggie. As for dear Seb, I was quite dissappointed there wasn't a 'Dude, who are you again? I took you with me on like, one mission, your friendship/rivalry score has barely moved either way, why do you think I would even care?' answer... I guess it all boils down to the fact that my hatred of the Chantry is even more intense then my hatred of the Templars - at the endgame I was ready to highfive Anders and dance on Elthina's smouldering grave.
Of course that's just my personal reception of the game, that is also rooted in my real life issues with a certain Chantry like institution. All in all I hold everyone withinin the Chantry's ranks responsible for the status quo, therefore Anders taking action against Elthina, members of the Chantry and anyone going there for worship is perfectly justified in my book.
But anyway, I'm sure all of this has been argued a million times already.

Oh I agree. I think there's great scope for you to play it however you like. My first character was an apostate and fought hard for mage rights etc so I never had an issue with Anders' actions other than (like you said) his lack of communication in letting Hawke in on the plan. I think it's a real testament to the writing and connection to the story that I can play it multiple times and have such strong feelings about how my character would react, despite them being polar opposite opinions. :)

Yes, the topic of “Did Anders do right or wrong” has been discussed a million times, but we could try to shoot for a million and one. :P

Personally I find what Anders did to the Chantry was the right thing. Yes, people died, but in war that happens. It was a ballsy move on Anders part, to destroy the Chantry, knowing full well this is the city were the Templar power in the east sets-I have to raise a glass to him for that move.

My feelings though of sadness are/were directed towards the fact Anders did not allow me to help more and just assumed I would kill him. My character hates the Chantry and Templars, hell as far as she is concerned, kill them all. I just wished I had the opportunity to allow that to come across in the game-ah well.

At any rate, this may sound silly, but I will bring it up. I was watching “Underworld: Awakening” the other day and it made me think of similarities towards the whole Mage/Templar War. I would explain it but that would be difficult.

Anyways just thought I mentioned that.

I always think that Anders are so sure that he will die because of the fact that he is so wrapped up in Justice. He is so used to the eye for an eye mentally that he simply assumes that it is the right thing for him to die as justice for those who died at his hand.

Good thing there is an option to keep him alive. I believe keeping him alive to see the outcome of his actions is a far better “punishment” then simply killing him. However, in my character’s case, she saw what he did as nothing wrong and is kind of pissed off that Anders would assume she kill him for it.

Beyond that, she wants to show Anders you can fight for mage freedom and still be with the person you love no matter what you did. Hell, as far as my character is concerned she would stay by Anders if he blew up all of Thedas. Of course, she has issues of her own, hates the Templars, chantry, and wants to see all those bastards die.

Oh... my Hawke is pissed off because of it too, but my Hawke is not me.
I don't believe in death penelaty. The only reason you can have for killing someone is to protect yourself, prevent them from killing another or to force something to change. And even the the act of taking another persons life can never be 'just' or 'right', just sometimes your motives are.

Ander's departure of his cat  ser-pounce-alot with a lot of tears involved could be the plot of the book.

My Hawke wasn't angry at Anders for blowing up the chantry, but she was sad that he thought she would kill him instead of letting him stay and fight for the mages. She was upset that he was saying his goodbyes and was getting ready to die.

Got about 10 characters on the go at the moment all going out with Anders (and about the same with Fenris). All girl Hawkes (don't care what Bioware say they are STRAIGHT - in my games anyway) Most times I do rivalry romance - love the conversations later on in that. For anyone who doesn't know/is new to Anders romance friendship you can flirt anytime but must flirt during questioning beliefs (after Dissent) rivalry flirt as much as possible. If you don't flirt before questioning beliefs (rivalry romance) you don't get the option during QB.

Question. Is Anders in DA3? Is he romancable? Does he still have the feathers? Will he get his earring back? (ok 4 questions). If the answers are yes, yes, yes, and (hopefully) yes i'm buying ;-D
