That portrait ladyofpayne posted is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for that nose

That depends very much on what decisions you made during the game, I guess.
If you played on the rivalry path, and managed to convince Anders to side with the templars (is that even possible without romancing him? Until now I've not managed to do either: side with the templars nor refrain from romancing Anders):
According to the Wiki, it's possible if you're at 100% rivalry, regardless if he's romanced or not. But in both cases, he hints that, once the showdown is over, he no longer wants to live.
In this case I don't think he would still be alive. I don't think he would have actually committed suicide. But his anguish and inner conflict would have reached such a level as to completely incapacitate him. Torn between a Justice/Vengance part of his personality that would want to go on supporting the rebellion and an Anders part overcome by deep regret: I think Anders would be crippled to the point of not being able to act sensibly at all. Sooner or later the templars would get him. Since they cannot possibly make him tranquil... the only other punishment they would devise is execution.
If you chose friendship path:
Well, in that case Anders would have been so confirmed in his views, thanks to Hawke's support, that I cannot think of him choosing any path but the one of further revolution. After the events of Asunder, he would definitely try to align himself with any mages willing to challenge the supremacy of the Chantry/Templar Order. In a leading role, I would say, because Justice would not let him aim for anything lesser. Depending on the rebellion's fate... it would either mean a quick death for Anders (if the Templars manage to put down the rebellion), or an Anders who becomes increasingly excessive in the methods he is willing to apply. We have seen the "first step" of it already; I don't think that the Anders of act I would have already been willing to blow up the chantry. But then... the more fanatic you get, the blinder you get... the more excessive, cruel and violent you get. Vengence is the force behind blood feuds, after all.
My personal conclusion: any future Anders has that does not involve Hawke is dark and depressing. Fortunately nothing of that will ever happen in my head canon... that's what I console myself with...
I pretty much agree with this, although I do believe that being away from Kirkwall might temper Justice a bit. I think the fact that the Veil in the city is extremely thin (cf. all the Codex hints) exacerbates every conflict in general, and makes Justice/Vengeance specifically more vehement and difficult to control. I wouldn't find it too outlandish if a non-romanced friended Anders would eventually somehow manage to keep a lid on Justice once out of Kirkwall. In which case, I wouldn't be surprised to encounter him in a rebellion-related quest in DA3 (helping fugitives or coordinating some kind of supply mission/manoeuvre).
