Hi Gentiana! Welcome!

Have you ever romanced Merrill? I love the Anders romance, but I'm determined to do them all before I quit playing DA2. So far, the only one I haven't done is the Merrill friendmenace, so that will probably be my next. But I expect that the Anders friendmance will remain my favorite. Because it's sappy, sweet, and riddled with cliches.

Same as you, never romanced her, so maybe I should give it a try. Probably going to rivalmance her, I think it gives an interesting twist to her relationship with Hawke, while I found the rivalmance with Anders very devastating. He was always so upset when you disagree with him, so I will forever be on friendly terms with him, no matter how much Fenris will hate me for it :pinched:

About the Anders dumping-scene...as much as it breaks my heart...his reaction was still priceless  :D you can literally watch his little heart shatter into pieces...poor guy, what's wrong with me, people? :pinched:

Merrill's rival romance was fun. What I liked about it was that she actually digs in her heels and stands up for herself. Rivalry literally breaks Anders, but Merril is a lot tougher and a lot more assertive than she is on the friendship track, IMO. That said, I think that I will prefer the friendship romance for her. I haven't tried it yet so I can't say for sure, but I'm a big softie when it comes to needy LIs, and friendship Merrill is definitely that. I think that in order to do the romance, I'm going to have to make a Hawke that is a 100% heterosexual male. If I allow even the faintest inclination that he's attracted to men, I'm going to wind up with another Anders romance playthrough, I just know it. Merrill is cute, but Anders's romance will suck me in every time.

And I know what you mean ReiKokoFuu, Merrill really is adorable.

As for me...I just can not bring myself to kill him, not with those big ol' puppy dog eyes and his "do what you feel you must" attitude, so yeah, I'm really really hoping to see a cameo of him, fighting those nasty Templars and seekers, with his Lady Hawke at his side.  (Points to whoever might get the old movie reference. Apologies to anyone that romanced him on a male character.)  I know he was mentioned in the Asunder novel, but it was left pretty vague as to whether he was alive or not.  Keeps it consistent for everyone, I guess.

IKR ?!

I did one playthrough siding with templars and didn't have the heart to kill him... Was 1,000 times worse! He came back at the gallows and I had to fight him and hear him saying "I loved you.. once" :crying:

All my other playthroughs I kept him alive and most of them he was my LI though

*steps forward* Hi, my name's PhantomGinger. I LOVE ANDERS.

I always romance Anders as a friend, but someone convinced me to try the rivalry path. So I made a Pro-Templar Hawke who has an Agressive/Direct/Diplomatic personality. I originally thought the rivalry path would be abusive to Anders, so that's why I avoided it. Anders's controversial methods inspired me to keep to the rivalry path because while I agree with mage freedom I don't think blowing up the Chantry was necassarialy the right way to go. Anyway, I started gaining rivalry points immediately even though I treated mages fairly well despite sending them to the Circle; I also let Feynriel go to Tevinter. I disagreed with his merge with Justice, and gained even more rivalry points.

The romance scene was still just as tender, and loving. When Anders begged for my Hawke to leave him during Legacy, she said: "Not a chance." When Anders started to lose his mind to Corypheus, Alyth snarled: "I'm not losing you to this. I refuse." I had tears in my eyes. Alyth refuses to let Anders suffer alone even when he's at his worst.

What I've learned is disagreement is a part of a relationship, but the point is to not let it come between two people who love each other. Sacrifices are also a part of it: Alyth Hawke will side with the mages, Anders will see the other side of his war and turn his back on Vengeance. Or try to, at least.

I think both of them grow a heck of a lot more. At least that's my view of it...I was quite a bit fascinated; then again, I'm am with all the rivalry romances.

Also...they're HOT.

Or maybe I'm just a troll and like ticking them off.

Maybe a bit of both.

I love the friendship/rivalry system, and I think the rivalry romances and non-romance paths add so much replayability to the game.  TBH I prefer most of the characters on their rivalry paths, with the exceptions of Varric, Aveline, Izzy, and Bethany.  It's a shame they're getting rid of it in DA3.

Merril reallz is cute as pie, but I was pretty impressed how she called me a shemlen a
fter refusing to giving her the Arulinholm. And after she kicked me out of her house. For a moment I even felt bad for denying her the tool, but on the other hand I could simply not agree with her plans. Not to mention that I found the 'New Path' quest very intense...:crying:

So yeah, rivalmancing the companions is pretty fun, I believeit challenges the characters way more than bz simplz agreeing with them. But with Anders...I had the feeling he seemed so much happier in the friendmance. The Questioning Beliefs in Act 3 is so heartmelting sweet...maybe I'm just a fan of cheesy declarations of love

Er... in the Act 3 QB, he's pretty much saying goodbye. It's sweet and it always kicks me in the feels, but it kinda makes me sad rather than melty.

Most of my playthroughs I friendmance Anders, because his rivalmance is so terribly heartbreaking. I just can't stand hurting him time after time. It kills me to watch him struggle with Justice/Vengeance ... and gradually lose. Friendmanced he seems to be a little more balanced.

Oh yeah, Act 3 is really depressing, whether you romance him or not :( even in the party banters he seems so tense, like he can't enjoy live anymore. And I felt that bein on rivalmance with made things even harder, I wanted to cry when Justice took over him in the QB. In the Friendmance he seemed to be so much more in control of himself, even if he claimed differently.

Has anyone of you had Anders kidnapped in 'Best Served Cold'? He actually pulls the damsel in distress quite well...

I'm considering doing that in my current playthrough. I'm torn though because I enjoy watching Anders advocate for the sibling joining the Grey Wardens. I've never left him out of the Deep Roads.

I have some slight guilt in continuously taking Anders to the Deep Roads, during the expedition and then again in Legacy. Not enough guilt to stop, though. :D

I did, have the video too if anyone wants to see.

It is a lot of work, you have to let Carver / Bethany die and then not have him around for the Act 3 mission right before the kidnapping but it is very much worth it, it is one of the few Act 3 scenes where he is as tender to you as he is in Act 2. Like Berelinde says, most of the Act 3 dialogue is him saying goodbye and pushing you away :crying:

Right: that's it! Time to bite the bullet try to do an Anders Rivalmance. Might go for the whole sibling death/Anders kidnap scenario as well, to get it all over at once!

At least Hawke couldn't have known... he or she was clearly just innocently honoring Anders' wish to stay out of the bloody Deep Roads. ;)

I will never ever kill Bethany or Carver in the Deep Roads ever again, that cut scene broke my heart to pieces! :crying:

Awesome video! Oh Anders, romantic as always...

Hm, it's interestig how David always feels the need to defend Anders' sexual preferences...but even so it makes him an even more awesome guy!

It is sad to see Anders lose more control during Act 3. He has a split personality, one he really can't control because that other side is just so nasty. I did rivalmance so he could see both sides of the Templar/Mage war, and that he was hurting himself and the people around him for being so severe in his morals (especially when Justice kills that girl from the Circle - yes, I let that happen. D: ). He eventually says Hawke was right all along, and to not be disappointed in him when he fails.
Rivalmance is both good and bad for Anders. The spirit inside him begins to go rogue, but Anders begins to see the light, so to speak. It may eventually destroy him in the end.

Yes I did. A question, when reading the bit about were they considered who was to be brought into DAII of the awakening characters, Gaider mentions that Velenna was supposed to be the one joining. So you would get a Velenna/Justice mix. When I read that the ending of DAII made so much more sense to me! I don't think I would even have been shocked about Velenna blowing up the Chantry, but I might have wondered why she hadn't done it in act I.

You all know I adore Anders, but after reading this I was actually kinda of sad that it wasn't Velenna.

Someone futher up commneted on rival vs friend romance. I have done both and I prefer the friend version. After he kisses you on friend path he looks happy and you see that so rarely. When he kisses you on rivalry he looks as broken as ever. To me he seems so alone and bitter even when you romance him (unless you are sarcastic, which was quite surprising for me). And I know this makes me a terrible person, but the thing I hate most about the endscene, is Sebastian falling to his knees. It is the only DLC I considered unintsalling.

Fun fact: If you can limit yourself to doing Sebastian's Act 1 quest, Duty, and ignore him completely from Act2 onward, he never shows up at the end to monopolize the Last Straw dialogue. It's hard missing out on the XP from his quests, but they're bugged to all get out by the latest patch anyway. When I do recruit him in Act 2, it's usually because I want somebody to point out that the person who did the deed is standing right there. It kinda underlines how far Meredith has fallen off her rocker.

Ya, I usually leave Sebastian alone, unless I wanna rub it in his face that I choose Anders and mages

I know, I just really don't want to miss the experience points. Besides I kind of enjoy the irony of Sebastian being appalled by Anders killing a "few" people in a chantry to save and entire race from persecution and then goes right on board with wanting to erraticate an enity city to kill ONE person. Just proves that it doesn't take a vengeful spirit to be a deranged vengeful bastard!... Aaaahh... aren't people a wonderful thing?:P

Poor Sebastian. Every word Elthina said went right over his head. I don't hate the character. Or maybe that's not quite the right way to phrase it. I love to hate the character. That doesn't mean that I don't appreciate him as a character, not by a long shot.

i can honestly say that if velanna had been the one to return instead of anders, my endgame decision would've been very different :/  i would've killed velanna.  i hated her so much in awakening >.>  i barely stomached romancing sebastian (i don't totally dislike him, but the whole constant preaching, hypocrisy and chantry explosion scene really puts me off him), i don't think i could ever romance velanna, even for completion's sake.
