One of the devs just tweeted this gif of Anders, and I thought you all might be amused:
http://hanlsp.tumblr...tioned-the-im-a

You can see all the companions prancing here:

:D

Yeah, I saw the video Danaduchy posted on Youtube of that. I could not stop laughing!

As much as I like Anders, Fenris proves that prancing is for elves.  ;)

(Is anyone else a little disappointed by the white backdrop?  I liked the black they had because it wasn't so headache inducing.)

All the characters are brilliant, though. I love those gifs.

(I preferred the darker forum theme. I think they changed it up for Inquisition, which seems to be all about white, cloudy grey, and red accents.)

I wanted to get that app at some point, but I never did that. May be it's just me, but I don't like it when full-scale RPG characters are turned into CTG pawns. That just ...does not feel right.

Oh yeah, and 'distraction' animation set was wonderful. That IS a distraction indeed... 8P

I finished playing DA:O Awakening and while I didn't dislike Anders in it, he wasn't mature enough for me yet, which I guess is fine since you can't romance him anyway. I liked the few more serious conversations he had and I really wish I'd been able to destroy his phylactory.

I'm playing through my first run with him as my LI (stopped the other one so I could play with the import DA:O story) and I just finished act 2. I got such warm fuzzies when he expressed how happy he was that I was safe after the incident with the Arishok, then realized that when Fenris was my LI he didn't say anything like that and I got kinda irritated lol. I thought it added an extra special touch to the romance with Anders.

Also, love the prancing gifs... those are just awesome.

Anders is by far and away the most affectionate of the LIs. I think that's part of why I like him so much. :chinhands: Everyone has their own way of demonstrating affection of course, so that isn't to knock Fenris or Bela or Merrill. But Anders just loves Hawke so much and after you move him in it just shines out of everything he says. (So hey, massive kudos to Adam Howden as well. You did good, kid!)

He's gone through so much and in spite of how badly he cocks it up at the end, there was never a doubt in my mind that Hawke was the one person in the entire world that he cherishes completely.

Also: Inquisition trailer today! I'm getting a lot of broken images on the forums, I think it broke the website. Who's excited???

I'm actually getting a little bummed at how he doesn't have anything to say in party to me anymore other than we should focus on the task at hand. Fenris had so many different lines when romanced and even now after we broke up, he still has more to say to me and nicer stuff to say than Anders. Maybe I'm just missing my elf

I have noticed that Anders' right-click dialogue doesn't change much and he says the same thing through a lot of the game, compared to the rest of the companions.  Last playthrough I thought it was a bug because it so rarely changed, but I guess it isn't.  So I will head-canon it instead.

I play the 360 version and Anders always has plenty to say when I hit him up. His romance lines are pretty heart breaking. ("I never thought you'd still be with me." Oh baby no ;A;)

Aw, you are so lucky! I play on the PS3 and have only ever romanced Fenris before so I thought maybe it was just the difference between the two of them. I mean, I get it, Anders is busy being oppressed and plotting his *cough* thing *cough* but I'd love to have had more lines from him. Even in Act 2, the only thing he said was about how he wasn't sure if he should cherish our time together or fear for my safety.

I've never romanced him with an fHawke but it might be one of those gender differences. He treats Lady Hawke much differently than dude Hawke. Also, there's just so much dialogue packed into the game, there are whole banters and conversations I've never heard even though they technically exist. So it could just be one of those misfires.

You could try it out with a guy Hawke and see if it works out for you. I'm trying to track down some of those ambient lines on youtube but no one seems to have recorded them...

Hmmm.... makes me thinking of trying a m!Hawke.  I've only played with f!Hawke (and darnit, am playing another one).  My m!Hawke was the biggest pro-templar guy around (oooh boy that was difficult to play) and hated Anders.  I just wish Anders had a bit more to say especially that would make me feel more affinity to Awakening!Anders.  A few more jokes would have made the old Anders show through.

I started a m!Hawke/Anders run-through just to check out the difference in dialogue.  But then got busy and discovered "Don't Starve".  Might need to go dust off my DA 2 soon and get back to that.  The last time we see "old Anders" is if you catch him at the bar talking to Varric where he's discussing his adventure with your old Warden.  :)

I was hoping Anders would contine in a more positve way from Awakening. I would have quite liked to have Nathaniel in this game as well. I really don't like what they did to his character. I feel like he was much better in Awakening and turned into a hot mess when I last left him he was doing quite well. The whole spirit thing.... why did they have to do that? Story purposes I supposed but they took what could have been a potentially fantasitc character and tweaked him unpleansantly. I still like him a lot, but why did that they to ruin him. Of course, I have to say that not one of these companions insipres anything kind of give a damn. It reminds me of ME2 where you have a whole lot of characters thrown at you for that one and you barely realy care about any of them. Same hot mess. Yes, it's nice to have more characters but these little cut scenes and visiting them and solving their problems become more of nuisance than anything else since none of them - not one really has inspired me (though I like anders because I loved him from awakening quite a lot - but he's sort of running on love built from that more than anything they did with him in this one).

Truly, the character development in this game is crap. The game itself doesn't even feel like a dragon age game. Not even a little based on the first, but it's fun enough. Next time I play it I will avoid all these dopey quests and code my way out of all these friend things by giving approval through console because I just don't even care about any of them even one iota. I wish they hadn't made is to unappealing in this area. I kind of want to shoot half of these companions by the second act. Anders is a favorite though, again mostly from love of him in awakening. Nothing about the scant development they have here does anything for me. BW really screwed up this one a lot.

I don't think it was all Bioware's fault.  I do think the game was rushed out as soon as the character parts were done.  The streets are so empty, the mini-map doesn't even bother to update enough to look like a different area, it just has sections blocked off.  Sooo much wandering around into random encounters, so little time to prepare for important bits that get dropped into your lap entirely unexpectedly.  And I, too, hated Act I.  I was ready to sell the disk back at that point.

But Act II really made up for it for me.  And although you are correct that all the love interests are "hot messes", consider 2 things:  This is done like the middle book of a trilogy, there is some familiarity of events from the first tale and a few familiar faces, but the resolution is not as complete as we would like.  Secondly, look closer at Hawke.  We are thinking of Hawke as over-coming all these really terrible events.  But what if Hawke didn't come away unscathed?  Those love interests represent the psychological impact of losing all the people Hawke loved in his/her life.  The effect of being sold into indentured servitude, etc.  Hawke is choosing love interests that are as broken as Hawke him/herself is.  Really changes the spin on things doesn't it?

I think it is more Woobie oriented.  Anders was quite likeable in the first game.  Here he is hunted and haunted and you play it and hope that offering a constant anchor point might allow him to pull out of his spiral.  But he can't stand seeing what the Templars are doing to the other mages to the point of taking desperate measures and dragging Hawke along for the ride.  If you ride this out to the "run away with me into the sunset" ending, you are left wondering if he will actually improve.  Hence the dissatisfaction with the presented ending.  It isn't what the developers are likely to make canon (seeing that Adam Howden has not been tapped for DA3), but we want to see some sort of hope rising in this endless blight.  Clearly Ferelden is not doing well since we left it by the king's own admission.  So we want to be able to save someone.

Anders is the same as Isabella.  Isabella causes the whole city to burn with her bit with the book and Anders does the same with his manifesto, yet there is no (or little) outcry on Isabella.  The difference:  Being allowed to make the choice as the PC.  Everyone hates that Anders does not invite them to decide *actively* to join him.   Both ask for your help, both betray you.  But Isabella's deception is considered lesser even if she leaves you to twist in the wind and takes off with the book.  Yet Anders follows the same basic set-up but the reaction is completely different.  And even the Anders supporters do not like that he makes that final step without them.  Yet Isabella takes off with the book and only returns to help if your friendship is high enough.  Anders will fight Templars with you at the end if you let him.  But these two things, designed to be similar, do not have the same feeling in execution.

How do you see Anders vs. Isabella and Fenris vs. Merrill?

I was wondering when someone would show up and tut-tut-tut at us for not playing the game properly. I'll answer your question with an equally fallacious question of my own: what is it about the Anders romance that makes men so insecure that they have to show up in threads and deride people for liking him?

(did u see wat I did thar? how I made silly assumptions about you and what you like and how Anders makes you feel, and wrapped it all up in one condescending question specifically tailored to make myself feel good without actually looking for an answer? because if I had wanted a real answer, I would have asked politely, and with respect.)

But on the off chance you're actually being serious there are some assertions I'll have to challenge. First of all, do not assume that ~only women~ could possibly like Anders as a character because that is terribly untrue. In my experience he's very popular with sexual minorities, many of whom are not women. So you need to get rid of that preconception, right now. You may be seeing the effect of social media in that women are more likely to congregate and talk about him publicly. But you're not getting that full picture if you think that's the only thing that could possibly count.

Secondly, do not ask for reasons as to the "why" of liking a character and then just fill in your own without waiting for an answer. Mostly because that reasoning is fallacious as hell! Why would you assume that people only like Anders because of his renegade-mass-murdering act? Why wouldn't people like him for other reasons?

Because he's...pretty? Or because he's...funny? Or because he's...a heinous ass to almost every other companion in the game in party banter, to the point where you just sit there seal-clapping like a moron because you're laughing too hard to make a sound because those put-downs are so beautifully crafted? Or maybe it's because he's sincere in his affections? Or because he moves in with you and can actually stand to be in the same room with you? (I understand why Fenris had to leave...but man, it still sucked, for both of us I think.)

In case you can't tell, those are some of the reasons why I like his character. Which have nothing to do with his sodding cause or the fact that he got his manfriend kicked out of the city, on purpose, when he blew up the Chantry at the end. And so, in closing:

I think it has been pretty much answered one post above.

Why do people love people? Why do people like books and music? Why do I love my husband?..

I think that among many BW romances Anders is special in many ways. Like he's not hero-centric. From what I know, he's the only DA2 companion that can leave Hawke, if (s)he does the wrong thing, long before those final battle rep-checks. Unlike Alistair, unlike most of ME LIs.

Of course, I can't say that I like him solely fir this reason alone.
