Oh thanks!  I don't think I have that one as I usually play mages.  Might be worth my time to look again.

Seriously, his "You don't hate me... You like me?" expression is deadlier than Qunari blow'em up powder.

O.o OMG when did this line happen I always choose him how did I miss it!?

So I'm trying to check out the bits on DA:  I in E3.  They really have put some amazing work into this, but they keep saying this:

There are up to 40 different endings.

Do we think this is is the end of Dragon Age?  I know they are creating one heck of an over-arcing engine to track everything going on, but do you think they are going to take those threads and tie them back into a single narrative for another game?  Pick 1-3 main threads and run with those?  Call this series done?  Or maybe take us to the first Blight and have us experiencing griffins or marching with Andraste?  What are the thoughts?

And did anyone get any hint of Anders leading any of this mage rebellion or Justice from the bits anywhere?

They're saying that the massive number of endings are mostly variations on a few themes, so I would not anticipate that this is the end. My best guess is that they're wrapping up some loose ends to get to a solid world state and introducing some key variations going forward. The devs have said all along that DAI will not be the last installment if they have anything to say about it.

By the end of Asunder Anders is nowhere to be seen, he does not appear in Andoral Reach (which is kinda key point to the mage-templar conflict) and he is neither expected nor discussed.

Probably, either one of our party mages or someone out there might have a rumor about him and\or Hawke. I'm almost sure that Cullen is going to mention him more than once in his dialogues, very likely recognizing his DA2 romance. Varric is another 'inner source', but he did not seem to know much during his chat with Cassandra.

But we don't have any solid facts just yet, only speculations.

Thank you.  I'm going to recopy the relevant bits below from it.  But it looks like 40 are the *major* endings.  There are hundreds of minor.  I understand now why they likened their over-arching program to a game master but much larger.  It's going to track all of this.  I'm curious if they are expanding it out and in the next one shrinking it back down towards a few common threads.  Interesting concept and they are, as ever, raising the bar for the other developers out there.  :)   (Aside:  Yes, no solid facts.  We have been starving for news for over a year.  We know the likely outcome...but if it's taking our saves seriously...surely he must be out there somewhere!)

Hey guys,

I just want to clarify the endings in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age Inquisition's endings variations come in three levels

1. Minor variations based upon choices you make in the game or previous games. There are HUNDREDS of these variations.

2. Major variations based upon larger decisions in the game. There are about forty of these

3. Completely unique endings. There are a small number of these

Anders, the tragic romance. He really changed quite a bit as the story unraveled, didn't he?

Had my Witty Warrior FemHawke romance and....

Spoilers if you never played Dragon age 2!

Spoilers!

.....later kill Anders.

Hear me out first.

Story time!

Basically my FemHawke was charmed by his good looks and the mystery factor. Though Anders also being very dangerous was a huge turn on as she was still pretty young when she first met Anders. That and Hawke is her mother's child, runs in the family to go after those crazy bad boy and forbidden Apostate Mages. Heck, his good looks alone are completely criminal as far as Hawke was concerned as no one should be allowed to be that cute!

Eventually the Deep Roads Expedition happened and Bethany would become infected by the Darkspawn and thus faced certain death had Anders not lead them to the Grey Wardens as a last ditch effort to save Bethany's life. This in turn made Hawke feel extremely indebted to Anders and earned him many cookie points with her and caused her to overlook some of the darker things that he would do over the coming years.

Anyway.... Since Bethany is a mage and Hawke loves her sister and wanted to honor Bethany, after the Grey Wardens took her in, she was very sympathetic to the Mage Cause based upon principal, that and Hawke hated slavery. So Anders and Hawke would agree on a number of things early on and when Anders later helped temporarily cure the mind of Varric's brother she took note as Varric is her best friend who she owes a lot to and she didn't want to see him suffer.

Things would change though, the repeated encounters with crazed Blood Mages committing mass murder and trying to kill them would unsettle Hawke and kept her from committing to Anders despite the mutual attraction between them. It took her mother's death to remind Hawke that life was short and that she needed to live her life to the fullest. Oh, and she was really depressed over the whole situation so she sought comfort from Anders whom she had been attracted to for years.

Even though Anders warned Hawke about getting involved with him, and it really wasn't healthy for Hawke to get into a relationship so soon after her mother's death, they eventually ended up in an intimate relationship as neither could resist the other any longer. At first the relationship was mostly physical to help Hawke forget what had happened to her sister and mother but eventually she came to terms with the fact that she was very much in love with Anders and evened allowed him to move in with her as well as giving him a special key. Though it was nice that Anders mentioned that he had been in love with her since before the Deep Roads Expedition and that it hadn't only been a one-sided crush on her part for all those years.

After Hawke became the Champion the Mage and Templar conflict started reaching the tipping point, after years of bickering, and despite Hawke trying her best to remain neutral the situation only continued to deteriorate for the worse. Around this time Anders started keeping many secrets from her, outright lied about his intentions and blackmailed her to distract the Grand Cleric for reasons unknown to her.

Hawke was hurt a great deal over this as she loved Anders and when they were intimate he still kept his distance and refused to open up to her. This showed that Anders no longer trusted her and his increasing extremist views were not only unsettling but frightening as well. However, Hawke gave Anders the benefit of the doubt and chose to believe in him and that his intentions were good because the man she loved was a good man. Or at least that's what she told herself.

That all changed when Anders destroyed the Chantry and killed countless innocents including the Grand Cleric whom Hawke held a deep respect for. Thus Hawke felt used and was disgusted that the man she loved could do such a horrid thing and had treated her as if she was only a pawn for his grand vision and never took her feelings or opinions into consideration. When confronted by Meredith and Orsino over his madness Anders never apologized as he felt that he had done the right thing.

Deeply hurt by this revelation, Hawke had no choice but to clean up his mess and try to salvage the situation as best that she could. This meant that she would have to do her duty as the Champion of Kirkwall and was obligated to carry out the Right of Annulment, despite her seeing it as too extreme, or risk Kirkwall being dragged into a Holy War. However, she vowed to spare the lives of any Mage who surrendered peacefully and to treat them with both dignity and respect.

As for Anders... Hawke questioned him as she really wanted to believe that the spirit within him had pushed him to such drastic measures and that he was innocent in all of this. However, Anders told her that it was fully his doing and that he had no regrets which broke her heart once more as what must be done was now clear with no room for doubt.

Though it pained her, Hawke had no choice but to fulfill her duty as the people of Kirkwall would demand blood as would the Chantry for this tragedy and Anders had to pay for the innocent blood that he had shed. Thus Anders had to die and Hawke would have to carry out his sentence as punishment for her, though unknowing, part in all of this. So with a final heartfelt goodbye Hawke reluctantly executed the love of her life, the only comfort she gained from this was that Anders was possibly freed from the spirit's hold upon his death.

Afterward a heartbroken Hawke would head out to restore order to Kirkwall as its Champion.

Yeah, seeing that Anders is just the last chapter's version of Isabella, why would you want to leave?  It's okay if you didn't like how the story went down but having a character take the control away from the player was a novel twist.  And if you don't like the character that's fine as well.  Just because other people do doesn't mean you can't find a thread you can enjoy.  Variety is the spice of life and all.

Well, we have official word that Cullen is definitely in.  And again, the original voice actor for Cullen was also the voice actor for Alistair and for Anders first incarnation.  So there is still a chance for a little voiced bit with our favorite mage if we pick through the endings with care.  Sheesh, that's going to be quite the challenge isn't it?  Any bets on running into Justice in the Fade at least?

Umm... Steve Valentine was the voice actor for Alistair, not Greg Ellis.

I had to shut down my computer for a couple of days to move it and when I tried to find the Anders Thread it was no where to be seen.  Went back into my own history to dig up a reply to find it.  As happy as I am for the Cullen Thread, I hope love for the Houdini-style apostate hasn't been lost.  Even Merrill's Thread is hot right now.  Surely there is some new art we can look at or thoughts on fan-fiction or even speculation on how Anders will be seen in the new story arc.  Thoughts?  Ideas?

@Gyrefalcon I think most of this thread either sits tight with fingers crossed hoping not to find any surprises in DAI.

Either this or replaying the previous games to refresh the impressions. Probably a bit of both. ))

Heh, I have to agree with you, NRleh.  But oh, I really am wishing they'd say SOMETHING about him.  But given the firestorm on the other threads about Anders (no pun intended), I can understand if there is a quiet inclusion for those who let him live vs. dealing with the hue and cry of those who killed him in their playthroughs.

I did hear that in the new game they are having some specifically-oriented companions in regards to their sexuality.  Given how they liked the way the fluidity worked on the sexuality of the companions in the last game went, do you think they are trying to get a more "realistic feeling" blend, trying to appease both sides?

Personally I think that straight female player is going to have a 'choice that matter'. Between Iron Bull and Ser Cullen. But that's not what you've been asking, I guess...

I'm glad they had enough budget to make more content. I don't mind other people having more options. What I dislike is how they now try to retcon the DA2 romance design, and make it look like 'oh, we've always wanted them all to be bisexual, we're proud with our LGBT content'. Plenty of previous quotes from Gaider indicate just the opposite. It was all about the lack of resources and time. Not to mention the DG's quote that only 2 of characters are really bisexual, while rest are player-sexual depending on the Hawke's gender.

He has stated recently that all 4 non dlc companions in DA2 are bisexual not playersexual:

Now, now, let's not forget our Dragon Age 2 history:

The truth is that making a romance available for both genders is far less costly than creating an entirely new one.

1) The companions weren’t all bisexual in DA2. Two of them were. You being able to romance whoever you liked is not the same thing, outside of the idea that in some other reality you’re aware of the possibility that they might romance someone of a different gender.

Once again— the romances are *not* “all bisexual”. While some people don’t like subjective sexuality, being aware of the fact some of your love interests could romance someone of the same gender in another game takes a back seat to fairness and fun gameplay.

All the romances in DA2 are available to anyone. If you’re desperate to slap a label onto their sexuality, that’s your issue. It doesn’t affect how they’re written, and doesn’t affect how the writers think about them.

So while I, as a bisexual member of the BSN appreciate what Gaider was trying to do, the fact that he's trying to pretend he didn't say certain things is pretty annoying. He may feel that all four LIs from DA2 are bisexual now but he didn't think so as late as a year ago. It's great if he's really changed his mind but that post really just smacks of a patronizing "of course I always thought that, when did I ever say otherwise" tone, and it doesn't change the fact that during production only two characters were conceived as bisexual.

It can't be both ways.

Inquisition 2014 > The Anders Thread > More arguing about sexuality.

I'm bored. Let's have an in-thread fanfiction contest.

Oooh, an in-thread fanfiction contest!  But it probably needs some content rules based on the rating of the thread, so low gore, and "fires burned low" much as the romance scenes in DA2 cut to.  And we need judges.  Who is up for it?

What length?

Should it have a singular theme?  Or should it be open-themed?  Or do you want an "iron pen" thing with best use of 3-4 different story elements?

Does it need to have specific characters (it is the Anders thread, but will all entries need to have our favorite mage in it?)

Should it be set in a particular area or time period or world?

When would it start and what day would they have to be posted by?
How long for the judging and will all the judges read all the submissions?
Scoring?

I'm in, but I'd like to write for it.  I want another shot at a fan-fic contest!  :)

I'd say different requirements for each challenge.

For the first challenge I'd say "keep it simple." 100-500 words. Anders' presence required. I'd base it off a prompt -- a word, or a screenshot. (I can provide both.)

My initial thought would be "oooo we can stick Anders in a bunch of modded armors" and then the drabble would be about, "how did Anders get this armor?"

It doesn't have to be that but you understand what I mean. Whether it's Thedas, our modern setting, or a different setting all together (apostates in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!) we can decide with each prompt. Mix things up. Stretch our writing muscles.

We'll probably get a low turn out since the thread isn't super active. I'm game for writing, I love writing, but I can judge too, I've hosted fanfic contests. First of all we need to get contestants so people need to post interest. Then I'd see give a week or so for entries to come in.

So flash fiction?  (A standard page in a novel is 250 words.)  But okay.  A very brief slice of life.

- Flash fic: 250 words.

- Slice of life.

Anything else? Otherwise, I'm chipping in.
