Seriously, does anyone else now have a hard time doing Act 3?  I love Acts 1 and 2, but as soon as I start Act 3 my heart just sinks.  I hate seeing what happens to Anders.

Same.  Act 2 was my favorite, because for a brief, glorious few weeks, my Hawke and Anders were genuinely content and happy.   Then the lily killer quest concluded, and that pretty much killed it.

On a related note, I am never going to be able to play Awakening again.

Yes! His descent is so well done in just a few scenes. Hawke is at the height of her power, looking accomplished, and he's hiding in her home, paranoid, disheveled and barely clinging to his sanity. If it weren't for the scene with Varric, where you know he's at least getting out sometimes, it would probably be too depressing.

Me neither. What a painful reminder of who he used to be. It's sad to think that Hawke will never really know that man, even if she and Anders are together for the rest of their lives.

Oh God, *this*. I never got a chance to play Awakening, but I was watching videos last night and my heart was breaking all over the place. Oh, Anders. You were so sassy.

I wonder how embarrassing that was for the VA? Unless they just recorded him eating a sandwich.

Bioware did a really good job of really making it hard to side with the mages.

Don't ruin that kiss for me!  That is the best thing in the entire game!

Can I admit that the kiss didn't have as much impact because I was still so heartbroken from the post-quest scene where he's sorting his belongings? I inadvertantly did them back to back, and it felt weird to go from Woe! to Hot so quickly.

Screw in the entire game.  That's my favorite video game kiss ever.  Alistair got nothing on this.  The sheer amount of WANT in that kiss...*shivers*  Crazy pants as Anders is, he really does love Hawke.

That's unfortunate.  I spaced out the conversations, so it felt like he'd had some time to adjust.

There were good and bad elements on both sides. Anders wanted to end the oppression and slavery of mages. He saw a friend/lover turned tranquil and begging to die, he's dealt with moving mages out of a toxic environment who were being tortured, raped, and under the risk of being made tranquil or killed under his brutal regime. Could Anders really stay the same person after witnessing so much darkness? He's devoting his life to helping the infirm and sick, and the mages who seek freedom from tyranny. There was no question in my mind that I would spare Anders, who I thought was a great character since Awakening and solidified that view as he devoted himself to the people everyone else discarded. Even in the face of Sebastian threatening a war from Starkhaven, I trusted Anders to have my back and help emancipate the enslaved mages of Thedas.

I think one of the rules of being an actor is to not get embarrassed easily xD

Though, I forgot to turn off my captions so all my screencaps say (Pants) above them, which is incredibly offensive to me, even though they are not referring to the tyrannical garment.

Yeah, the panting caption did take away something from the scene.  I really need to remember to turn the captions off right before that next time.

I see alot of that Anders in the banters and conversations. And his early flirting. I was just playing Awakening yesterday, and realized when talking to him at the tree in amaranthine he already HAS the intense anger, he's just buried it pretty well. But when mages and templars come up, you can really see it.

This is true.  He still has the same anger in Awakening, but it's magnified in DA2 by the circumstances of the mages in Kirkwall and the presence of Justice/Vengeance.

I need a "poor Anders" banner.  Or better yet, a "GODDAMMIT ANDERS" banner.

I normally play with the captions on, but I haven't used them for DA2 because I can't read them anyway. xD

Also, it seems that I'm one of the very few people who want to replay Awakening. The dialogue with Anders and Justice was great. It's been a long time since I've heard it, and I've always thought it was interesting to see what drove the characters to be who they are now. They were both my favorites in Awakening, and they're still my favorites in DA2.

I might do it eventually, but not so soon after finishing DA2.  There's only so much Anders heartbreak I can take before I have to hold off for a bit.

This is true, but the easiness is gone. He carries so much weight now that even the moments when he's flirty, old Anders it's not quite the same, whereas he used to be able to separate Fun Anders from Rant Mode Anders.

Thinking back to all the things he said in Awakening, I am surprised he didn't crack sooner. I mean, a year in solitary confinement, all those escape attempts... I felt in Awakening it was played off a lot as "Oh, you." because of his humor (as in, I didn't necessarily think much about it because they were usually passing mentions in humorous stories and when he did get mad he always went back to the jocularity). DA2 really puts a lot of that into perspective.

I kind of want to play Awakenings again now, because I want to see that transition. After I finish this playthrough (and lend DA2 to my long suffering sibling who keeps stealing it anyways), I'm considering doing a DA total playthrough: make another fem Amell and run through Origins, Awakenings, Golems, Witch Hunt, and then DA, all in a row.

I just finished a DA marathon, and Anders is the character that ate my brain. I didn't like him very much in Awakenings beyond finding him very useful and vaguely resented the knowledge that this "cheap Alastair knockoff" was going to be our returning companion. What a difference a game makes. I completely fell in love with him in DA2. He's passionate beyond all reason, and that passion is centered outward. It's not just about his own freedom and comfort anymore. It's extremely attractive. He's brooding and almost broken, but he's also highly principled, in some ways Meredith's foil, being as obsessed as she is about the opposite cause. In some ways, it seems that he's not person for the task. He is by nature and talent a healer, but he's gone to war because no one else will.

About the Chantry: I think what he did was gravely immoral. Deliberate targeting of civilians is never justified. At the same time, I don't want to write him off completely. If not this, then something else would've happened that Meredith would see as cause for Annulment. And peaceful means have not availed. And conditions in the Kirkwall Circle are inhuman. He seems to have started what may be the best chance of genuine freedom for every mage in Thedas. Or they'll all be wiped out. But at least the status quo has a real chance of changing now. In the real world, I would say that someone like Anders should spend the rest of his life in jail, but within the confines of the game, I felt terrible for killing him.

My first Hawke hated his guts and refused to do his companion quests on principle because she was a templar sympathizer. I look forward to running a Hawke who plans to be by his side every step of the way for what she sees as a necessary revolution. Regardless, I wouldn't change the character for anything. I don't want to redeem him or save him from himself. He's far too interesting as the very dark gray character he is.

And how interesting is it that he still has lines he won't cross, despite everything he's done? I would have almost expected him to use blood magic and justify it as being necessary for the cause. And he doesn't.

That's one of the things that interested me; that despite the blood he's willing to shed in his cause, he can't be an Orsino. He has limits, and he won't become a full-on abomination (versus a half-demon, I think he calls himself). I think perhaps in his mind, that means the templars win? Sometimes I feel that Anders is making himself out to be every mage in Thedas, in a sense. What he's willing to do should be the limit in his mind.

This guy went from really cool good friend that's a little troubled to mass murdering douchebag in one fell swoop. He really pissed me off.

It sucks to do so, but I've killed him twice. And I'll kill him in all my playthroughs. No justification for him deciding to pull a osama bin laden.

Does Anders still manage to blow up the Chantry if I don't help him?
