Hawke: Mages mages mages mages mages! Rights!

Has anyone tried having an all mage party?

"Anders, please stop yelling at the amnesiac templar who forgot we were just slinging fireballs and is ignoring that I'm in a dress and we both have staffs strapped to our backs."

Then again, right after this Hawke yelled at Cullen and Carver was like "WTF R U DOIN YOU DOLT"

And sjofn, had Hawke willingly sent Merrill and Anders off to the templars I don't doubt Fenris would have had his "TROLOL ABOUT TIME" moment. But Anders' comment was super douchey anyway, nothing changes that.

Yeah LOL I was like "Jesus Anders can you stop being a catty b**** for a moment please, wow."  Not that I turned Fenris into Danarius, because I mean, in order to get Anders' douche comment you have to be the ultimate enabling douche.  Which he/she is anyway.  But Anders srsly, cool your jets.

Fenris would have probably been "jeez about time," too, if Hawke were to turn Merrill and Anders in, but I guess it would have been the lawful thing to do and he'd be justified because they ARE kinda dangerous, heck Aveline probably would not disapprove either.  Seb would hump Hawke's leg except he's forgotten how that part of him works.  Augh Hawke why are you such a d-bag and why are your party members even bigger d-bags.  Alistair would have disapproved either way!

I have a hard time not being mages now is because they're so fun now. :pinched:

I just went back to Awakening a couple days ago and it felt so alien to play as a mage in that game again. I'd just sit back there with my stick with Anders while mashing the A button like a fool.

His battle cries sound funny with DAO mage animations after playing DAII. :P

My manHawke rogue takes Bethany, Anders and Merrill around with him a lot. Unfortunately, you cannot have all four be mages, but that would be epic. My husband runs around with his femme mage, Merrill, Anders, and Carver or Fenris, which is also pretty funny.

Awww, you're right. Okay Anders, just one Chantry and after that it's bedtime. I don't care if you want a drink of water. Bed, bed, I say! ...er...., Hawke says.

Anders and bed is pretty much always a good idea.

Also, Seb. I didn't even recruit him my last playthrough. True, I missed Leliana's cameo and some guy getting felicitated, but the "OMG Anders Chantry" scene was about 1000 times better. IMO. Also kind of amusing. NOBODY else cares if you kill Anders or not, unless you specifically ask your companions.

Ah, Anders... I would definitely not kick him out of bed for eating crackers and/or sandwiches.

Haha, I liked asking my companions.  Besides Seb and Aveline, everyone seemed to care less about the fact that he just blew up a building...  I about laughed when Izzy said it was bold plan.   I was sold on letting him live then, LOL.

Also, I feel like if my Warden and Hawke met, there would be explosions, dramatic camera angles and slow motion shots, and some epic trailer music.  Seriously I would love for them to meet and just FIGHT.

I was thinking about fixing my Cousland import (since I imported a save that was post-Landsmeet but pre-DR/Archdemon into Awakening, my import for her is completely broken. Either that or King Alistair is way into dead women), but the idea of playing Awakening makes me sad. Especially with this Cousland, who is so smitten with him from the moment she meets him and openly adores him by the end of it all.

I realized last night that, between my 7 playthroughs of Awakening, in which Anders is always with the Warden, and the four I've done of DA2, Anders almost always in tow, I've put in more time with him than any other DA party member that isn't Alistair.

If my warrior Hawke and my Cousland ever met...it would be fun. They can talk about the **** they've endured and how they may or may not have contributed to the (potential) collapse of civilization.

Cousland: I did let my boyfriend impregnate Flemeth's daughter with an Old God Baby.
Hawke: O_o
Hawke: Wait, I don't even know if that's better or worse than helping my boyfriend plant a bomb in a Chantry, killing a bunch of templars, and then running away with him in the end.
Cousland: Well, Anders does have that...way about him. It's hard to say no to those eyes.
Hawke: You have no idea.
Cousland: I wouldn't mind having an idea.
Hawke: ...
Cousland: *smiles dreamily*
Hawke: So an Old God Baby, huh? And Flemeth is the grandmother.
Cousland: I'm hoping Alistair's genes negate some of the more unholy ones.
Hawke: We're totally going up against some sort of god whose only weakness is cheese, aren't we?
Cousland: Definitely. But his hair will be *perfect*.

I have two questions:

First: How does party line-up work? What I mean by this is, when you have a companion to your right, to your left, and behind you, what dictates where each companion stands? The order in which you selected on the party selection screen? How much they do or don’t like you? Their class? Totally random? I ask because I originally thought it was based on the order in which you pick them, but some recent events make me not so sure.

Several pages back, someone mentioned that, during battle, Anders ran and hid behind their warrior. Definitely has an awesome level of cuteness in that he fell in behind his “protector”. I haven’t had that happen yet, alas, but there’s always hope. But anywhos, that little story made me remember something very strange/interesting that occurred on my first playthrough – rogue Lady Hawke who friend-manced Anders. Now, I pretty much had a set party that game and I ALWAYS selected them in the same order – Anders, Merrill, then Varric. And they ALWAYS stood in the same places: Anders was, quite literally, my right-hand man; Merrill stood on my left, and Varric had our backs.

But, after I completed the Act 3 “Justice” quest and Anders donned his “funeral attire”… where he stood changed! All four of us walked out of his clinic and, suddenly, Anders was standing all the way in the back of the party and Varric had taken his place at my right! I did the “gather your party” thing, wanting to “fix” it and get Anders back at my right side (I’d grown used to him always standing there beside me), but no matter what order I selected them in, Anders insisted on standing in back. AS IF HE WERE TRYING TO DISTANCE HIMSELF FROM HAWKE. That, combined with him pulling away emotionally as well, made that whole act really depressing and disturbing. I have no idea if that was… a glitch or something, or if the designers actually thought about the story elements and made that happen, but it was goosebump-inducing.

Second question: Can someone please help me in thinking up a warrior Lady Hawke to rival-mance Anders? I’d like to see how romancing him that way goes, even though I know going into it that it’s the more painful route, but I’m having a hard time justifying the character herself. I don’t want her to be cruel to him 24/7 because, really, what’s the point? If Anders is so desperate that he’ll put up with her emotional abuse, that’s very sad. But if she’s really so against everything about him, how can she love him? At the same time, if she’s just pro-templar/mages-belong-in-the-Circle non-stop, HOW can she possibly justify herself? Her sister’s a mage, plus there are two mages in her party… if she’s pro-templar and/or anti-mage, why doesn’t she just march all three of them down to the Gallows?

I’m just… having a difficult time coming up with a mindset for a Hawke that would rival-mance Anders. To me, any Hawke that is pro-templar is a massive hypocrite. I’m already playing a massive hypocrite pro-templar 2H male Hawke (anti-mage, yet rival-romancing Merrill; boy has issues) at the moment in order to get the pro-templar/viscount achievements, but the only way I can stomach it is knowing he’s a total jerk to, well, everybody (wanted to see what Aggressive Hawke was like, after playing Sarcastic Hawke for my rogue). He just forced Feynriel to go to the Circle last night and I honestly felt BILE RISING IN MY THROAT the whole time (which does not bode well since this character will be the one and only shanking of Anders… I may actually vomit after that scene, gah).

*sigh* So, has anyone come up with a good “rival-mance Anders” Hawke that makes sense? I’ll take any advice I can get. About the only way I can see it making sense is if she starts out pro-mage because of her sister… then, maybe, make Bethany a Grey Warden… then, after seeing about 80% of the apostates she helps in-game turn to demons/blood magic/abominations, she starts to waver… then, her mother’s death-by-crazy-apostate sort of seals the deal and turns her pro-templar, feelings for Anders aside. Only problem with that is… that kind of playthrough would net friendship points with Anders, then rivalry points, and I fear it would just stick him in the neutral position that way. Plus, being all pro-mage my first playthrough, that had Anders at 100% friendship by the very beginning of Act 2, so then I’d be stuck. Any suggestions? Or am I doomed to play a hypocritical Hawke I can’t stand just to see the Anders rival-mance?

Sorry for the wall of text!

@Batteries Console Anders is the worst Anders. The first time I saw my boyfriend playing Awakening on the PS3 I clapped my hand over my mouth in horror. Just...no. I'm so glad that it was a case of the console getting Generic Companion Morphs and not an actual character design decision.

@RinjiRenee In my head, he hates those robes because his chest gets freckly when he wears them. And they stink. His commander, however, does not care. For obvious, objectification, reasons. She figures as long as she's letting him kill templars, she should be able to keep him in whatever robes she wants.

I thought that was in DA2. Didn't he just want to avoid them in awakening?

And he isn't even shooting lightning.

His boots are so fancy, I can't get over them. I think his Awakening codex said something about him being a little particular about his appearance?

As I do believe you're right about a dogmatically pro-templar Hawke being a hypocrite, I've got a couple ideas for you.

First there's the approach my Hawke - male, nonromance but this is about a point of view - had and that is that all extremists are a big part of the problem in Kirkwall.  So you can yell at both, for example, "Mages need to be controlled!" to people like Anders and "Mages deserve some freedom!" to people like Fenris and so on and so forth.  The idea is that your character believes in reform, and will try to do whatever it takes to ensure that war doesn't break out.  This characer would return mages to the Circle - such as on Thrask's quest - as well as rather violently put down blood mages or overzealous Templars.  However it might be tricky to max out Rivalry with Anders if you bring him along on the quests that might involve the latter.  Although the way I played was more diplomatic ("The Divine might disagree" and "There must be some other way") than what I describe above, I just think that being angry at both sides' extremists would be more satisfying and be better at accumulating Rivalry points with the right party makeup.

Second there's the devout Hawke.  He/she simply may not like the way the Templars do things, but they are the Makers servants and have an unpleasant job to do.  This isn't quite as hypocritical as Bethany herself believes in the Maker.  This character - and I can hear the groans of this thread already - would approve of Sebastian's views and would have a hard time justifying not stabbing Anders when he kills the Grand Cleric.  In terms of the quests and how to do them, this Hawke would look at their What Would Andraste Do? bracelet.

@Dragon Racer: RE the first question, my understanding regarding the battle positioning was always that it's dependent on the order they appear in your party list (and therefore the order in which you add them to your group), and rotate around your currently controlled character. I don't remember exactly how it works but I think that the first person you add to the group will be on your left, the second person on your right, and the last person behind you to make up the diamond.

Sometimes after a quest, party order will change up, especially if a companion temporarily leaves the group and is then added in automatically after completion, which could account for why Anders' position change for you in that instance.
