My lady Hawke's name is Cassandra, which caused me to think about the Seeker Cassandra in a different way. I always name my PC's Cassandra or Iphigenia, and try to set them down a snarky route, but sometimes **** happens. Having a Seeker with the same name as the Champion upset me at first, but I think names are powerful and that maybe, in my game, the similarity made sense (esp. given that Varric's story tended to guide her in the direction of "heroine worship").

In DAO, I had Brandelyn Cousland, named for King Brandel because her father felt sorry for the poor guy or something. Eleanor wanted her to be called Lyn, but Fergus chose Brand and it stuck.
Then I got bored with people talking about the Awesomeness of the Dalish one night, so I made Ron Mahariel, the most non-Dalish Dalish ever. Then it was expanded to Ron ****ing Mahariel (or, using the default M!Mahariel, The Ron ****ing Mahariel).
I chose Wilhelmina for my warrior because it's solid and it has two great diminutives (these things are important).

That's my real name, slightly spelled differently lol
Of course I didn't name my Hawke that to avoid confusion with my Warden.
This is so odd to me, that people name the characters after themselves. My bf does it, and it's too funny, cause he's Finnish too and the name doesn't even remotely go with Hawke or Shepard![]()
I used to choose A names (I, also, have an A name), but got bored. I tend to think about the connections, like in DAO naming the Cousland girl going nicely with Fergus (F name, or something equally Scottish), or dwarven noble ending with "n", much like her siblings. Hawke's siblings had nice, earthy names, so Hawke should have one too
Well I don;t always do that, but DAO was my first bioware game and when i was presented with all these options i didn't have a set "persona" premade and ready to go, so i just made her after me lol. it just so happens that Alison is sort of an old english name that fit into the scenario. i dont really pick what first name sounds good with the last name though, because it really doesn't matter for most females - there's a good chance it will be changing anyway
For other characters where I sort of had a semi idea of background and what i wanted to do with personality type (as opposed to just being "human") i do get more creative, or in JRPGs where you get to rename a preset main character, I pick other stuff.
Personally I think it's fun to make the first character after yoursel a little since that is the most honest character closest to what you'd pick IRL. or for me that would me anyway.

I always choose mostly classic French names.... I could overthink it and think all my Wardens were Orlesian conspirators but oh well. They usually dont sound too bad with whatever the last name is.

All my characters in everything are black-haired, ponytail-wearing, green-eyed tanks named Rilinda. I'm always really put off if a game messes that set appearance up :U
It's probably best that the game can't take appearance or first names into account, or else Anders would probably be really weirded out by the fact that he knows two overprotective black-haired, ponytail-wearing, green-eyed rebellious freedom-fighting warrior women named Rilinda who befriend everyone, fix everyone's problems and both have a mabari named Scrambles.
you know i'm the same way, only my characters are always brunettes with long hair (or as long as bioware lets them be), down with no embellishments, brown eyes, pale skin. the dog name changes though but almost always a rogue
Surprisely, in both DAO and DA2 this matched the family lol. She fit right in with the Couslands and definately looked like a offsrping of Bryce/Elanor, and could easily pass for the younger sis of Fergus.
In DA2 I was surprised as how close my Hawke looked like the default Bethany (without even trying) so much so I would sasy she was the fraternal twin more than Carver.

Pretty much this. I try to choose classic names that would work both in fantasy and the real world. No "creative" spellings or names based on people or places that don't exist in Thedas. It means giving up my beloved Adelaide as a name, but there are plenty of alternatives that fit for Malcolm and Leandra: We're Totally Just Peasants' child.
I usually name my characters by class- Slania for mages, Alia for rogues, Raien for warriors. It saves me the trouble of having to be original since I'm horrid at making up names otherwise.
I'm just starting a 2H playthrough now though, and I named her Evey so it can be all DA2: V for

Why not? It would be very Fereldan.
Heee! Good point.
However, my Atticus is about as far away from a mabari as a dog can get. And now I'm imagining those Dog Lords in Lowtown showing up with a bunch of fearsome basset hounds who are all tripping over their ears for a chance to get pet by Hawke and company. It's waaaay more amusing than it should be.

Oh, and as for names, I try to think of names that would fit with their family members/background.

Wait Wait wait, this wasn't actually done right? I mean, I saw the idea, but no one still realized it right? Because I *cannot miss* it if it happened.
Also, I admit I somehow prefer fantasy name with a bit of credibility though. My F!Hawke are Dunizel and Eressea, my M!Hawke are Damien (I adored him and his playthrough, no idea why, I did a somewhat perfect portrait for my tastes...that I admit, creepy resembles my boyfriend somehow), and Krelian

You have every right to prefer the Anders in Awakening, however I felt his humor was just covering up a lot of pent up anger. I see a pretty natural transition.

Same guy.
Just -- his coping mechanisms were set to "difflect" more than "run at". The guy's mentally not all there in DA:A, too. (I'm looking at a year in solitary as being a possible cause.)

You can if you like, but you do miss out on some great character development! He was fun and adorable in Awakening, but now we know lots more about him and it's interesting watching the character develop over the years. the changes aren't to everyone's tastes, but most of us probably wouldn't be in the DA2 fan thread if we didn't like who he is in the most recent game.

Well, you can ramble away to us. And we won't judge--unless you're opposed to kittens. In which case, we will smite you with vengeance!
I have different names, personalities, appearances, etc. for all my characters, though I do have a strong bent toward playing mages (or in ME, the space mage equivalent). And I make way more brunettes/black haired characters than blondes...and about a 65/35 ratio of female to male characters. Natale Hawke is my first blonde character in a long, long time.

My stepson does this. Of course, he has a badass name (it's Odin). He also puts it in all caps. Sometimes with exclamation points after it. Just so that theoretically if anyone were to say his name they would have to shout ODINNNN!!

That would just be patriotically embarassing. Hawke would kill them out of principle.

There there... it was all a bad dream
I like both Anders... to me he grew (teehee grew). Not all in the best way but he became more fleshed out and deeper. Hawke does not know the jokey Anders... to Hawke only this Anders exist. I see a lot fo frustrationon other thread how Bioware killed anders and blablabla... but I dont see it. that's just me though

Yeah, especially for a gay male Hawke? Being named Man asses isn't exactly.... it's a bit... wrong.
My canon Warden was named Odette, my canon Shepard is Adele. I like French names.

I agree. I usually feel closest with that first char. Like, with my second Hawke I'm constantly trying to do something, reading the wiki for hints and stuff. It's annoying, but I want to see all the content. The first one is you.
Do you guys who name them after yourselves also make them look like you?
I always try (before making the char), but I never succeed, my face is copy protected
