And on the note of DAO having hard choices? Uh...no. Every major bad decision had a failsafe (or a third option.)
Romancing Alistair sure you had to do the DR but everything else was smooth sailing. Didn't want to be a mistress? Don't make him king. Want to be with him and make him king? Roll a HN or become his mistress. You don't want either? Well you have plenty of other choices so suck it up. You want to make sure he remains in a mostly cold marriage? Harden him, marry him to Anora and become his mistress. You even get the benefits of her politically savvy helping rule the country.
If I wanted to commit US in a romace with Alistair? Leave him at the gates. So on and so forth. There were multiple ways to get what you want. (Within reason. I couldn't get Alistair and my PC to head for Orlais sadly. Despite that being something I would've done.)
DA2 has too much railroading already. It doesn't need more. (Granted I don't mind Anders not being able to side with templars. I just mind him doing a comple 180 on the rivalry path when you side with mages).
There were plenty of ways to get happy endings in origins. Doesn't help that all the DR ominousness doesn't seem to affect the PC at all.
