I am telling you, I wanted to pack up Anders, Fenris and everyone else, BUY a ship (why did we need to make a deal with a douchebag for a ship for Isabela when Hawke can afford one)... and get the hell out of there.
Go find the warden or something. Or simply just go.
And why didn't anyone try to step up to become viscount in 3 years? The templars and chantry have gone mad with the power. lol
Yeah my Hawke's weren't packing anyone. Those lot where part of the problem. Especially Anders crazy self. I love him but he certainly wasn't helping.
Maybe Fenris. Maybe. But everyone else could kick rocks. Varric was chill. Aveline didn't want to leave, Izzy left, Merrill was fixated on that mirror...Anders was planning on blowing up the Chantry and being a revolutionist.
My Canon Hawke didn't want that headache.
As for Vicount I see it as no one wanting to deal with those crazy templars and mages. I can't blame them. Half the people in Kirkwall were bat****.

Yeah, that's why I ultimately had to write my own version of the ending in a fanfic. Never written one before but the game left me feeling there could have been more. There wasn't enough tears, gnashing of teeth etc. It just was. Steered by the way the developers wanted it.
To me it felt just like a JRPG. Just like one. And I say this as someone who likes JRPGs.
The developers focused too much on the story they wanted to tell vs. Letting the player tell a story. It's all over the narrative.
DAO felt like just the right mix between them telling the story and letting me muddle with it. DA2 is just...ugh. Railroading, railroading. It managed to railroad me more than ME2 did.
And really a non mage Hawke should've been able to takethat "screw you guys I'm outta here." choice. Mage Hawke I can see as being cut down if s/he refused. Warrior/Rogue Hawke should've been able to walk away.
