Fakeness being necessary? I don't know. Personally I dislike pretenders strongly. I rather have a unhealthy relationship and know where I stand than a "healthy" one (if you can call it that) with someone lying to me. Especially with them wearing a mask. Because it begins to beg the question who exactly am I in love with? The person? Or that mask? 

I don't know if I'd describe Isabela as "masked". She seemed to have more of a "this is what I am and I'll do what I want, **** the haters" attitude than anything. Even more towards the brutally honest side of the spectrum. It didn't look like she had any major hangups to mask, other than the trust issues she basically resolved by the end.

Yes. People don't engage people completely honestly. That causes problems.

It's not something we've even seem to have evolved to do. I know I was reading a paper (a billion years ago) talking about the inability to recognize fake smiles as possibly something useful to smooth social situations. We don't walk around naked, why would we walk around naked emotionally?

Haha. Sam and Dean have one of the most awesome bro relationships. Ever. I liked that Carver and Hawke were given a nice, little emotional scene at the end.

Man, Aveline throwing a fit over the shield just pissed me off. It's a funny gift, you dummy, you should know Hawke isn't going to be sensitive to your DEEP HIDDEN ISSUES after how the Donnic situation went down!

Though I see your point. Probably explains why people see me as so crass and blunt. I don't care to pretend to be amused or happy. If I don't find something funny I don't laugh. If I think you're faking a smile I call it out.

So a certain amount of "fakeness" is good to avoid being ostrasized. Which is a bad feeling for social animals like us. Mostly because we're so squishy when alone. Like solo mages.

Seconding this. I left him after a single night of hate-sex, and three years later he's still carrying enough of a torch for her that he threatens the man she's been living with all that time since? What. What. What.
I so wanted a scene in the Gallows at the end, where Hawke gets to tell him, "Look, I really hope you're leaving after this, right? Because if you don't stop following me around, I'm going to have to press charges for stalking. All right? All right? Andraste's ****ing ******."
