While we're on Fenris, I'm finding it extremely frustrating how he can't seem to appreciate anything I give to him. The book? 'Eh, I can't read" that sword? "Eh, this is fake".

Needless to say, I threw my hands up and gave up on him.

Friendmancing Fenris I offered to teach him how to read and he was super sweet about it.
He's very grumpy pants if he's a rival though.  Aveline is even worse grumpy pants as a rival.  She kept telling Hawke that Hawke doesn't trust her abilities as a guard captain.  WTF, I just stood up for you to Cullen and told Jeven to STFU and die.  I didn't let you talk, sure, but when did I seem like I doubt your abilities?
She confused me so much, I'm not trying that experiment again.  Though the fist fight was awesome!

No wonder he hates my stupid gifts. I was so busy trying to impress Anders that I've only recently noticed the 80% rivalry with Fenris. Why though, Fenris? Why can't you open up a little bit more? =(

And lol, Aveline gets a little intolerable by the end of Act 2. Especially when you're trying to set her up with Donnic. She tells you she's moved on from Wesley, but shoots daggers at you for selling his shield. I even recalled a time when she said, "I know we're not friends, Hawke" WTF?! So all this time playing matchmaker and creepily listening to your lovemaking meant nothing?

Fenris doesn't like you helping mages escape, dude.  Or dudette?
Cannot take Anders and Fenris on mage missions, one of them will hate you no matter what you do.

That'd be a dude. I know I wasn't supposed to take him, but I liked to switch between Fenris and Aveline for tanking. It just so happens that whenever I do mage-related quests, I don't bother to switch him out. And Anders pretty much lives in my party of 4. I never leave him out. I guess I wasn't particularly expecting Fenris to be extraordinarily pissed off at me as a rival.

....unlike Anders. At least he still accepts that amulet graciously.

EDIT: Here's an NSFW pic of Anders/m!Hawke.
Sums up their tortured love.

u guys are Awesome LoL

BTW i've been wondering how many layers of cloth does Anders wear any way
i still have no idea what his outfit looks like if he take out his green coat

i really want to know how all his cloths looks like... for drawing purposes of course...

I spent half an hour looking at him in game trying to figure out what hes supposed to be wearing. I think his brown coat thing is sleeveless, his boots are awesome and he wears green pants. I think the sleeves are attached to his shoulder pauldron things. Then he wears rags underneath all that. And a bib.

Thank you!!
i've tried to study his cloth too...then suddenly felt like a perv for trying to look up his robes...

As someone with an interest in art/fashion/design I find myself spending far too much time staring at characters and concept art trying to figure out what's going on XD

I honestly really do wonder what's under that grey... nighty he wears. Does he wear an under shirt? He must or he'd be all itchy!

Fetish?

Odd.

Ah well. The insane mage and the terrorist. We make quite the pair.

Now I have to play a manical douche Mage that's pro-mage freedom so he and Anders can run around blowing up Churches together.

that's actually not entirely true, i took them both everywhere and still got them up to max friendship. it really depends on mostly what you say them to during certainly scenes i think, because there was one instance where i got like +25 friendship? with Anders, it was HUGE. there were also several times i thought i would get rivalry with Fenris and didn't - what surprised me was when i went to help the qunari mage and had varric get rivalry but not fenris, so it really depends.

Hmm. True.  Fenris gave me friendship points when dealing with the slavers, which was a pain for aggressive Hawke who was going for rivalry.
I found that in my first playthrough me and Fenris went back and forth like lunatics because I took him EVERYwhere and I was very pro-mage.  And then I'd kill slavers or help him and he'd like me again and ARG.  I had to kill him at the end due to my stupidity.  Bad me.

I have to wonder though why romanced Anders doesn't get some new clothes.

I mean...Hawke's rich. Surely he can get something new. :/

Edit: I had stupid Garrus' reach and flexibility on the brain.
As for getting rid of Fen's points with slavers I just rivaled him with good guy Hawke. Who always gave peoplea chance to put down the weapons before battle. Oh god Fenris couldn't stand him.

I'm having this same problem with Sebastian actually. I'm trying to rival him, it's like one step forward when I say something dickish to him and five steps back because I saved some apostate mage.

lulz. It's the internet. You're allowed to be somewhat creepy and forward.

We're on here *some of us* drooling over a pixel character. That's pretty creepy to start with.

But but but... he's sooooooooo hot.  And that voice, that damn voice!

The voice.

I don't mind being slightly creepy. Makes things more fun.

Though I do wonder how often Anders stole my dude Hawke's things. For that creeper shrine of his.

RE: gifts

I wonder if maybe Hawke is just horrible at gift-giving. In Origins, companions would mention what they liked (Leliana-shoes, Alistair-mentions the golem doll and mother's amulet, Zev-the Antivan boots/ Dalish gloves, etc.). Then the Warden finds/buys this stuff and gives it to them, and everyone goes, "Oooo! You remembered I like this!"

With Hawke, it's more like she/he's picking up random stuff and going "Eh, I bet Aveline/Fenris/Anders/whoever would like this." And at least Fenris' and Anders' gifts can result in them going, "You want to me have a symbol of the magisters/something that would get me killed if anyone saw me wearing it? What is wrong with you?"

Something akin to Fenris' red ribbon around the wrist would of been nice. Something small but acknowledging Hawke in Act II. He is trying to push away from Hawke more and more after his costume does change in Act III, I would of liked seeing whatever he wore for Hawke disappear then. That would of hit a little harder than the "... Are you going to die today? Am I?" black clothes.

I went OOC on the slavers thing and made a deal with them through Varric.  I felt dirty.
Hawke was extra hard ass on everyone after that to make up for it.  And I think she went all "I will kill you" on many a conversation.

First time I gave Anders his amulet and he made the comment, my brain clicked into 'well, you're quite vocal about the whole apostate/save the mages thing - you think people could want to kill you MORE?'

You're forgetting the most important part of his outfit, the bib. It goes under the green half jacket thingie but over the top the brown overcoat!

Now that I've beaten the game a few times and thus don't feel as guilty about metagaming, I find the DA Wiki to be extremely useful in planning these things out.  I like to think about who my Hawke would be friends vs. rivals, since that alone helps me pin down a lot of details about her personality and values.  Then with that in mind, I metagame like crazy and check the wiki right before I do each quest to see who gets points for doing what.  If it's just +5 friendship or rivalry that I don't want, I usually ignore it and bring that companion anyway since that can be made up pretty easily.  If there's something in that quest that gives them major points in the "wrong" direction, I'll leave that companion at home.  Sebastian is a good example, since I'm trying to rival him in my current playthrough and sometimes he approves of strange things.

Anders is EASY, though.  Whether I'm aiming for friendship or rivalry, he is always maxed out a couple of side quests into Act 2.  His reactions are pretty predictable, and he gets points during a lot of quests.

I admit it.  I cheated.  I totally went console and upped Sebastian's rival points because the man just refused to hate Hawke (probably because I never took him anywhere since the last time he tried to tell Fenris that the Maker had a plan for him... OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!!)... so yeah, shameless me.  I just wanted to tell him to go back to Starkhaven.
