Seriously. Wow. My heart's breaking just reading this, poor, poor Ander. Poor Hawke and Anders. I just... yeah, I'm gonna go cry in a corner now.

There always going to be the group that rages about something it's just inevitable. I'm impressed with how Gaider has handled the whole thing along with the rest of the writing staff. They've gotten a lot of crap but also they've gotten a lot of praise too. There's good and bad in equal parts I think. I can honestly say when I played ME2 I really liked how it ended same with ME1. They fed into each other nicely imo.

I think the disconnect with the DA series is so many felt that their Warden's story was incomplete and I don't blame them for that cause it is left up in the air but there's usually a good reason for it DA2 had a decent storyline and if you ignore DAO it's great but when you factor in DAO I sort of felt like something was missing and I think it was the feeling of the story being rushed. The characters we had for our party were great it was just the overall plot seemed like three short stories thrown together whereas DAO was this epic journey. To me it's always about the content within the game and second are the mechanics/gameplay. I think the writers were pushed to get this game out sort of like KOTOR 2 was pushed out even though Bioware had nothing to do with that game. My hope is that there will be DLCs released for DA2 that add more to the storyline that didn't make it in originally due to time constraints and that should DA3 get made it is a longer game which is traditional in RPGs. I like having a game that is long if the story is just epic I think DA2 could have been made longer and give us more Anders screen time

See, that's where I thought the logical conclusion of the rival path was, considering his dialogue you get when you force it in the console. He says he can't live past this, hopes Justice and not Vengeance rises from his corpse, etc etc. If you are forced to kill him, if there are actual consequences, then, as I've been saying all along, I wouldn't hate that path so much.

It sounds like a fantastic ending to the rivalry path, and would complete it very well. It's also completely heartbreaking, so as a canon friendmancer/sunset-rider, I am both jealous that rivals would get something that grabs all of ones heartstrings and rips them out of one's chest, and also glad that I haven't had to go through such a scene. Because, ouch.

I love the points you raised here, you're completely right about the disconnect, it really felt like too many people came into DA2 ready to hate it and unwilling to give it a chance. I personally enjoyed the shift in scenery, I didn't need every epic adventure of the warden told, I knew the warden would be having many of them for as long as he/she lived. However Thedas is such a big place, there's so much to be expanded on and I wanted to see more of the world, so I was glad for the change. I loved Hawke, I have never loved a video game protagonist as much as I have with Hawke, not even with the Warden, but I won't be upset either if we get a totally new PC for DA3!

I think my greatest issue with Anders is how necessary he is (on Nightmare).  I didn't like Oghren in part because Origins forced me to use him.  With Anders it's different in that he isn't locked into your active party, and it really is my own fault for playing on Nightmare.  I would welcome another healer.  Let's put it that way.

I won't delve into how I feel about his actions near the end of the game as I can only imagine that it has been covered ad nauseum in the ~500 pages this thread boasts.  You'll understand, I'm sure, if I don't feel like exploring said pages overmuch.

Ah and that is why I love to love/hate/curse/cry/fall in love again with his character.  I have not had the chance to play for a few days BUT it brings you back and back again

I think this is actually done deliberately. If Bethany has survived you can circumvent his necessity somewhat, but otherwise you really do need him on your party, and killing him is actually a hard choice not just because he's your friend (especially if he isn't!) but because if you DO kill him you lose an extremely valuable asset to your party. If I was ever going to play a Hawke who did want to kill him at the end, I'd probably have to roleplay that she/he made him live through the final battle and then stand trial/be killed by Hawke at the end. I wish there was a dialogue choice at the end which reflects that: "What you've done is unforgivable, and you will pay, but I need you right now so pull your weight."

Just listen to us all having just read the lines... can you imagine... if.. if...if it had actually not bugged and been in the game ?  I actually thought the rivalmance ending should have ended with him dying. He loses too much of himself and it's clear they can't be separated... it's mercy and release for him.

I would certainly agree with that. After losing Bethany to the Wardens on my rogue, I had to take Anders everywhere or rely solely on health pots. While I enjoy his character, it would have been nice to rotate more members of my party in and out, rather than that one slot taken up by the single healer. 
But I think that's more a complaint with the game design and the way they choose to implement the individual character specialisations, rather than a problem with the character himself.
