Heh. Jenncgf wrote a one-shot about Anders getting into a threesome at a tavern, only to find out that one of the ladies had a templar sister waiting to take him in after everything was said and done! I love the idea that some of his attempts were less for Freeeeeedom! than they were just to be normal for a little while.

And, being a mage in the Ferelden Circle, normal means lots of indiscriminate kissing.Image IPB

I figure this has to be the case, especially the escapes that occurred when he was rather young. The first few attempts were probably to just try to get back to the life he had before. Then, after a while, it would grow more into the whole freedom thing. I assume not going to the Circle until he was 12 paired with all the glimpses of normal life he got when he escaped is what eventually formed his concept that he was being treated really unfairly. So then it became a mix of just wanting to be out of the Circle to have some fun and a conviction that he should be allowed such freedom anyway, the same as anyone else (anyone who isn't a mage of course).

haha you guys are making the Ferelden Circle sound like so much fun, and the templars seem almost FRIENDLY. I wonder if Kirkwall is just THAT MUCH worse or Origins just didn't go into that much depth with the whole mage treatment thing.

I agree with you.  I pegged him at about the same age as Zevran, actually.  My Warden (FemSurana) would have been about 24, Alistair 22.  And Zev's about 27.

Really? I had no idea abut Zevran's age, I always placed him in mid- to late-30s.

I don't think it's canon, but it's about what the old Zev thread decided.  Just like the Garrus thread did with Garrus' age.

So... Anders is about 35 when Elthina goes boom in my head canon.

I think both.  Kirkwall is worse than the other Circles and Origins didn't go into depth about it.

Origins does suggest a couple things but don't get into anything.  Such as the Mage Origin you have an NPC say something like "I hear the Templars watch us when we bathe, its not true is it?"  The Mage v. Templar this is a big deal in DA2 where as in Origins there was a much bigger world will be destroyed by Archdemon problem and going into mage abuse wasn't what they were worried about.

Why can't he just get a new carriage like normal people in their midlife crisis?

But noo, he has to get a fancy spirit and blow up the chantry. Cause that is so hip and now.

I thought is the "Calling" Fiona/Maric theory was true, then Alistair was only 19-20 in Origins? That always made me figure Anders was at most 23-24ish in Awakening. He just didn't seem drastically more mature than Alistair to me.

I have to say, I have been stuck at home for two days due to medical problems, and you all have been very entertaining. Mr. Almost-Anders won't stay home from work and coddle me so I would normally be bored out of my mind at this point. ^_^

Here is an Anders escape:

*Anders makes a rope using Templar undergarments and climbs out of an upper story window. Is caught because of the sudden disappearance of undergarments among the Temps raised some concern. They let him climb all the way down before Gregoir hauls him back inside for laundry duty.

That's what I set Alistair at too, being about 20.

I saw him as in his late twenties in Awakening. Don't really know why.

I love the thought of him as a gangly 15- or 16-year-old coming up with either outrageous plans that will never, ever work, or just being impulsive and taking any opportunities to get out from under the Circle's thumb. Even if it doesn't include escaping, just stealing food from the kitchens and hiding away in an unused part of the tower with books and blankets while everyone is out searching the countryside for him. I know it's unlikely, what with the phylactery and everything, but it's an amusing thought.

That said, I wonder why they didn't just keep his phylactery at the tower for easy access, instead of carting it off to Denerim. Have a piece of painted card stuck to it that says, "When glowing this colour, Anders is more than 300 yards away. Find him."

When Anders talks about "everyone was kissing everyone" at the Ferelden Circle, I never really had the impression that the Templars were so lax there, it was one grand old orgy all the time. It more seemed like the mages had to be indiscriminate if they ever wanted to have sex, because they never knew when they would get another moment when the Templars weren't watching them.

That seems to go with what Wynne says about unions between mages being ..."not encouraged." You couldn't really form a relationship. The Templars would get suspicious. So if you wanted to get laid, you pretty much had to be up for a fling or a one-night stand, and you'd be better off switching partners to avoid the Templars noticing you getting too close to any one person. Like Anders says about mages not daring to fall in love.

My impression, anyway, ymmv.

That said, the Ferelden Circle, while not exactly lax or friendly, is definitely better than Kirkwall, where the mages are confined to their cells, made tranquil at the drop of a hat, etc. etc.

That's the impression I had as well.  It's certainly how I role-played my Amell and Surana.

I agree, Anders strikes me as early 20s in Awakening.  22-24 in awakening and no older than 32-35 by the end of DAII.  Also was wondering if Fiona/Maric pairing was canon or just a theory as to Alistair's birth?

Maybe Justice aged him. Or, he doesn't get enough sleep now and just needs some cucumbers to get rid of those pesky dark circles under the eyes.

Well, the pairing itself is canon. They do get together and have a child. It's just speculation, though, if that child is Alistair or someone else.

I immediately thought that he aged because of Justice.  When you get obsessive like he is about feeing mages, lack of sleep, not eating well and all that stress will age the crap out of you.  He does need a good spa treatment.
