You shouldn't be locked out of any other romances until the actual romance scene comes up.  I haven't thoroughly experimented with this, but I think it takes successful completion of the sex scene to lock out other romances in Anders' case.

I had Merrill show up for her romance scene, turned her away, and then went on to do Anders's romance with no problems.  So flirting with Anders shouldn't mess anything up; you can always turn him away later.

I like to wait until after the romance scene as well. Although, Anders' little comment about how Aveline should stop messing around because "lifes too short" made me snort. Says the man who waited three years to start anything. I could just picture Hawke rolling her eyes. I like to imagine he was still on a start of the relationship high and thus was giving out advice about ninja kisses and such.

I get the kiss from Anders, then do most of Aveline's quest, going home to ~love scene~ after spending an awkward evening at the Hanged Man with Donnic. It amuses me because a) Aveline is like "What about you and Fenris?" (at which point Hawke is probably thinking that her decision to keep Aveline in the dark about the soap opera that is her love life might not have been the best one) and it adds to some of Hawke's delightfully annoyed frustration at the tavern if you imagine she's delaying her sweet, overdue mage loving in order to help Aveline.

And then, when she does the patrol the next day and facilitates that whole adorable Aveline/Donnic hook-up, it just adds to the whole mess of *squee* if they're both in the throes of new love (and the "Just kiss her already!" is fun for an Anders who so recently got laid AND a new place to live out of just kissing Hawke, already).

I think it's funny that if you're a femHawke, Donnic is like, "Look, if you're just trying to get to me through the captain...you're not my type. I like a little backbone...all this go-between stuff isn't my thing."
And if you're manHawke? "Look, I can tell you're just trying to get to the captain through me. Women like a bit of backbone. I mean, how pathetic would it be if you needed a go-between?"

Meanwhile, Hawke is staring at him with a poker face, thinking, "WELL then. Time to break the bad news to Aveline."

She'd buy Varric a bar, send Merril to Lanaya in the Korcari Wilds, stick Aveline with Sgt. Kylon making Denerim the safest city  in Thedas outside of Qunari Territories (smartest man and toughest women, luv it). Anders would get a fully stocked and staffed place of healing with a side classroom to teach young and on-the-run apostates, and Isabella would get a permanent room at the local brothel for whenever she is in town.

Still, I see my Hawkes stopping, staring, and on the way back to Kirkwall asking if he's forgotten who needed three years before he could bring himself to try a relationship. Even more so if he snaps at Aveline in the Hanged Man that she'll never have anything if she doesn't risk anything.

...Though I suppose Aveline did have some obvious interest in Donnic back before being made captain, so maybe they're both hopeless. <_<

To be fair, Donnic isn't an abomination. I figure Anders' standards for romantic conduct are compartmentalized between "Not possessed" and "Possessed."

Although, that might be an even stupider pairing. Not content to sleep with the known apostate-abmination-Grey Warden? Well, have I got a new one for you! Here we have the First Enchanter of a prison of a Circle. Watched day and night by Templars, locked in his room and constantly fighting with the most powerful woman in the city. That's a great choice, right there. You guys can meet for rare conjugal visits under Meredith's watchful eye.

Yes, yes it is.  Lacks details about Nathaniel and Oghren though.   Maybe built a Warden training facility for Nate, with a bust of the first Warden Howe out front, and buy a year pass to all the bars for Oghren?  And/or build a brewery in Oghren's honor, make him part owner of it?  Perhaps with an adjoining clove and hops plantation?  Call it Blue Griffon Ale!  All proceeds benefit the Wardens.  Buy Felsi and little Oghren sprat a house?  Granted, Hawke doesn't know the Warden-Commander's friends, but Anders would, and he's a giver, when his head's on straight.

Anders getting old, and lots of frown/smile lines around his eyes and mouth, just makes me happy.

He'd always have that tired look, too. And the lines would just make it sharper. : D I'm one of those (rare?) people that likes lines on men and women.
