Regardless of circumstances, he lies and uses Hawke - even one who would very likely agree with him.

In reading this forum I have found some things I have missed about the romance...one being something about a lute. When I bring myself to the third play though I will be sure to do it.
Two moments that stuck out for me was in Act 3...clicking on Uncle Gamlen made him make the comment about hearing I moved "that apostate boy" in with me and how I was just like my mother. The second moment was banter when Merrill told Fenris Anders broke the one thing that made him happy (I can't remember the exact wording). I teared up...
Aww, I want to hear that Merrill banter! When do they say that?
And I loved the lute thing. "Anders may have talents, but playing the lute is not one of them." XD I just imagine this:
Hawke: ::sitting at her desk, writing::
Anders: ::sitting by the fire with the lute::
::long silence::
Anders: PLONK
Hawke: ::jumps::
Anders: PLINK PLONK
Hawke: What are you doing?
Anders: Writing a song.
Hawke: I thought you were strangling a duck.
Anders:
Hawke: ::guilt::

It's like Old Anders showed up for half a second!
Male Hawke is just full of win. After two playthroughs as m!Hawke, I've grown fond of Mr. Boulton's voice (the sarcasm and anger, etc). Anders/Garrett definitely make one of the best couples in DA2. It's treated quite differently. Uncle Gamlen makes a smartass remark too, "I heard you moved that apostate boy into your home. You don't need to tell me who the girl is."
Their relationship went from:
"Don't threaten me, boy!"
"Mages need to be contained!"
to
"Well. Under that scruffy exterior, I think you've got a bit of a soft heart yourself."
then....
*scribbles arguments*
"I'll convince no one else in Thedas! I'll at least have you by my side when this is done!"
*Hawke gets annoyed and calls it pointless*
"A mage who turns against his own people to curry favor with the templars!"
*awkward silence*
"I don't know whether to kiss you or kill you"

I wish they would actually have some scenes like this. I needed giggles something bad by Act 3. Or one more good romance scene. Another Anders kiss could have healed many wounds.

I wished I wouldn't have missed it! And great dialogue about it thanks!
Merrill says it to Fenris in Act 3 after he breaks up with you, it was totally random and I didn't expect it. She says something like poor Anders...Fenris mumbles something about who cares...then she says he broke the one thing that makes him most happy. I wish I could remember it word for word...but it is in Act 3 after the break up. Very sad...

Anders is welcome to all the stinky boys he wants, but I just can't play one for 30 hours if given the choice. XD Usually. If I replay a game enough, I eventually will. I finally got around to making a male Shepard, after all. Only time will tell if I play DA2 enough to get bored of Lady Hawke and try Man Hawke.
The thing is, whenever I do make a male character, they always end up being huge softies who are attracted to the bossiest characters. Commander ManShep is just Miranda's little man slave. I'm really not sure why this is. Something freaky and Freudian, I'm sure.

Also I will always think that not allowing a +100 Friend or a Friendmance character to be consciously complicit in his plot to destroy the Chantry was a big mistake.

The problem is you need that shock and surprise, to have motivation to possibly reevaluate your position in the 11th hour. Until then Anders' position is understandable and you might not grasp how absolutely and singlemindedly dedicated to bringing "justice" he is.
Though it would have been nice to have the chance to be involved, I see why there isn't. Still sucks to feel used though but the ends justify the means for Anders. Or, well, nothing else is as important as the end.

Instead of "what have you done" more like "the revolution is at hand!" But it'd also have to lock you into the pro-mage ending, it'd be complicated. But the fact he uses and deceives every Hawke regardless of their relationship bugs me.

I always found it very tragic that in Act 3, Anders' dry sense of humor picks up far more than it did in the last two acts. Before he blows up the chantry, he really impresses this aire of "I am becoming a perfectly happy normally healthy person!" and reminds me of the old Anders from Awakenings.
In hindsight, it was just to enjoy every day since it would be his last, but dear god, that was just sad.
I imagine it was because he was finally driven and had a plan in motion. He had discovered his purpose, as it were.
I'm not sure about that. I was under the impression that the entire time Anders was in Kirkwall, he intended on destroying the Chantry. Hence why he was even IN kirkwall to begin with. His quotes, lines, and conversations suggests and hints that 'something' is coming.

Play Man Hawke. Romance Anders. Boulton voice. Adorable talk on sexuality. Bonus suggestive dialogue. ??? Profit.

It certainly feels like it, especially when you are romancing Anders (I chose Rival) and he keeps detailing that in the future Hawke WILL get hurt whether s/he likes it or not. I don't believe he's implying Justice. I was pretty certain he was talking about the Chantry, and that he would use her in order to start his revolution.
Which is why the writing was so strong. You assumed one thing (Justice would be the bad thing destroying the relationship), when he means another entirely (Chantry). It makes more sense why Anders chose to be in Kirkwall of all places. He's aware of its part in the world stage of Mages vs Templars. He knew well ahead what he was going to do.
I imagine it took years of preparation, planning, and materials to actually blow up the Chantry that well, too.

Well, I'm still wondering if he's above lying to us or not. Everything he says is technically true, but it wasn't the complete truth and he knew that.HolyJellyfish wrote...

When he says that he's been studying Tevinter stuff for the past 3 years, I got the impression that that was how long his plan has been. I also get the feeling that he wasn't hellbent on doing it from the start, perhaps just thinking "I should do something" but not knowing what. When you help him, he reveals that it feels good to satisfy his spirit, so it means that he was probably feeling BAD, and therefore compelled to do it. I don't think he would have the strength to not blow up the Chantry for 7+ years.
Also, part of why he blew up the Chantry was because the head cleric was neutral, which wasn't exactly a clear point until later in the game. I aso feel there is some truth to the title "Dissent" for his quest. He's getting worse. He tells us how he notices more tranquils, and that he feels like the Templars are on his doorstep. I perceive this as a man slowly reaching a conclusion.

Meredith most likely had the idol after you got back from the deep roads because it was most likely sold by then since Bartrand was gone until Act 2. The other thing is that the Grand Cleric says while she feels for the mages she can't condone any course of action while, I forget who says it I think some random Templar, says the Grand Cleric is giving false hope to the mage cause. I don't think she was really neutral I think she was hoping it would just get swept under the rug or that Meredith would handle it hence why she just doesn't remove the crazy Templar lady. That's just my guess.
I agree. When you are off to distract her, she gets a very snotty tone about you being friends with apostates or something. She seems very displeased by Hawke openly supporting the mages and seems to hint that there is nothing really wrong with how they are treated. If Meredith hadn't gone completely bonkers (and obviously if Anders hadn't done what he did) things would have continued getting worse and worse and the Cleric would have never stepped in because she didn't see anything really wrong with it.

Same here. I prefer the Anders sex scene, since some of the animations look pretty awkward in Merrill's, but come on! Take your shirt off dude! Take SOMETHING off! Anders is wearing an ungodly amount of clothing. I just imagine Hawke peeling off layer after layer, trying to get to the sexy abomination beneath.
