Really?  I saw more hate toward Anders or Sebastian... never really toward Carver who is awesome and the main reason I play a mage over and over. and over.

On the other hand - and if I'm remembering correctly - Gaider mentioned in a thread in the Story/Quests forum that he didn't think the Divine would approve the Annulment.
I totally understand that merely having the threat of it hanging over the mages is enough to spur Anders into action, but it also makes me wonder what Meredith would have done had her messenger come back with a refusal. At that point an Exalted March hadn't actually been called, so was she holding off on the Annulment because she'd rather call a March? Or were both options only possibilities depending on Leliana's report and if things settled down?

It surprises me that the Divine would reject the Annulment.  If she's planning an Exalted March anyway... an Annulment would almost certainly have fewer casualties.  Seems kinda strange.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised Gaider said he didn't think the Divine would be down with it, just because if you're convinced the Kirkwall Circle is THIS CLOSE to rebelling and you're thinking of marching on Kirkwall anyway, it seems like the less bloody solution. Although maybe she wouldn't approve because it's supposed to be the grand cleric's call, and she doesn't want every overzealous knight-commander out there sending her letters saying OMG AUTHORITY PLZ, LOCAL GRAND CLERIC DOESN'T UNDERSTAAAAAAND.

I sort of wonder if Meredith sent for it to be approved because she also knows the Divine has her eye on Kirkwall rather than simply having a hard on for killing mages. It wouldn't surprise me.

ROFL at the text in bold.

I suspect Meredith would eventually have acted even without authorization, knowing it would cost her her position, maybe get her executed even.  She was less and less stable, more and more convinced she was the Maker's instrument in Thedas.  What is the word of the Divine compared to personally knowing the Maker's will?  I'm sure heresy is perfectly compatible with crazypants.

I will never understand that. Carver's awesomesause.

Carver is more whiny than Allistair and Fenris put together. His inferiority complex is clichéd and dull.

Pfft.

Whateves.

Carver's awesome <3

I adore Carver with a special love. Maybe it's because I too am an overshadowed younger sibling. Also, he's hot.

I still have a hard time imaging Dorothea from Leliana's Song calling an Exalted March.  She seemed so nice.

Maybe she has a bit of the idol, too, and it's making her crazy like Meredith and Bartrand.

My level of FFFFFFF RAEG would be through the roof if this were the case. LOL IDOL DID IT annoys me so much.

Me, too. Although the fight with Meredith was fairly cool, that aspect of it was so...bleargh. Stupid idol and its stupid, selective mind poisoning.

For some reason this reminds me of "Do you like my mask. Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead." It really IS like living on a Hellmouth.

Me too.  He's my favorite character after Anders.  He's such a jerk, and I love him for it.

I like that he's a jerk and you can argue with him and tell him to STFD and STFU. And despite his 'blah blah shadow' crap, he still cares for you and is protective in his own way :')

So, I went straight to the Gallows in Act III this time around and guess what? Ser Kerras says that Meredith has asked for the Rite of Annulment STRAIGHT AWAY. That means for the whole of Act III the mages are sitting in the Gallows with doom over their heads BEFORE the Seb/Leliana mission, so when you're talking to the Grand Cleric trying to distract her from Anders planting the bomb that will kill her she KNOWS FULL WELL that Meredith is trying to kill all the mages and she STILL sits on her arse and does nothing.

I only wish she could be blown up TWICE.

If Anders knew this... this would explain why he's changed so much in Act III. I can't believe that never occurred to me before.

There's that bit in the codex that says he's recently taken up the cause again and it could be because he got wind of this. I mean, people may say that the Grand Cleric is ignorant of it, but how could she be?? It really throws the whole of Act III into a new light. Anders' increasing desperation and manic craziness, the rise of the bloodragers - even Grace's betrayal all make a lot more sense.

See, this was always my thing with Act III. I was like, but... Anders, why are you taking up the cause again after leaving it alone the last three years? I only ever wanted the tiniest of explanation. But if he knew about this, then it all makes total sense, and he may have. If the templars in the courtyard at the Gallows are spewing that info to passerby, then it's likely most of the apostates knew. It really does throw everything into a whole new light, and that's why I hate that it's a throwaway piece of dialogue you can easily and completely miss. If Anders had mentioned Meredith having sent for the Rite at any point, it would have made so much more sense to me the first time around.

I had always thought that perhaps "Justice" had changed Anders' mind for him. But if he knew about Meredith's plan... then it makes sense.

Edit: By "it" I meant the change in Anders. Just clearing that up... =]

It's actually a very reasonable explanation. It would be neat to have it in the actual game.

I will never understand that. Carver's awesomesause.

Most people seem to judge characters more along the lines of "how much I would like this character in real life" than by their depth, believability, etc.

People bring up things like Carver's jealousy and Anders's hypocrisy as evidence that they're "the worst characters" and I'm just like, those bad things? To me, "likeable" is much less important than "interesting".

Depends on whether you friendship or rivalry him, I think.  But either way, I don't think Anders would sit around and wait if he knew about Meredith calling for the Right of Annulment.

Poor unloved Carver.  I adored my resentful wackjob of a little bro.  His final speech before the last fight is just the sweetest.

I agree. His speech before fighting Orsino/Meredith was very, very good, second only to Anders' in my opinion. There's a sweetness in his voice that is both very believable and endearing. And the way he say "brother" in the end is so much different than the beginning. Kudos not only to the writing, but also to the voice actor, that did a fantastic job throughout the entire game.

Right? A single sentence in actual game conversations would have made all the difference.

I LOVE CARVER THE BEST seriously if I could I would always choose him over Bethany /offtopic

@ipgd: Exactly, my being able to like a character or not is based on actual value to the story/strength of personality/etc. I can't really judge what characters people will end up liking since we all have our reasons, but I try not to project my own thoughts and feelings into Warden/Hawke/whatevermaincharacter.

That pic should be posted every 100 pages

And yeah, I like characters for how interesting and involved they are; obviously, if I just can't stand them for some reason it doesn't matter much, but I try to see the merits of each character.  For example, I think Meredith's a great character precisely BECAUSE I hate her guts and enjoy seeing her get lyrium fossilized.

In my Ser Carver the Templar playthrough, he calls my blood mage femHawk "Sister" at the end and she yells "Don't sister me!" and he still sides with her.  That's devotion to family.  <3 wub <3   We love to hate you, Carver!

It's amazing if he goes the Grey Warden route.  He grows up so much.  I was so goddamn proud of him I was almost tearing up.
