He is good in banter too, yeah. I actually really enjoy his romance but it sort of suffers from the same thing when compared to Anders' that Zevran's did when compared to Alistair's: that it's not really connected to the overarching story and is therefore less impactful.

That's the biggest thing for me, I think.  I liked Zevran's romance, especially the ending.  And I really do like Fenris's romance.  I've only played it to completion once, but I liked it.  But neither of them stuck with me, and I think it's because I love it when the romance ties in so tightly to the main story.  It really adds to the impact of the story.  Would the Chantry explosion have been as much of a gut-punch if I hadn't romanced Anders?  Would agonizing over whether to kill or spare him have been as... well, agonizing?  Probably not.

I like Fenris but personally I never felt that Emery's voice actually suited his "looks". First time he opened his mouth I thought "whoa".
Oddly enough, I can't really pinpoint what it is I like about Anders. Howden does an excellent job as his VA but his voice wasn't really "omg!" like Brandon Keener and Valentine.
It must be the puppy eyes.

I actually really enjoy Fenris's voice. In the Top 5 in both DAO & DA2 for me.

I get oddly fascinated by when Anders does and does not pronounce his Rs. Is that weird?

No.

"R" is one of the more fascinating sounds humans make. At least, I thnk so. It's crazy!

Try explaing that sound to a non-native speaker that has more of a flap R than the crazy one we've got.

I once heard an interview with Hugh Laurie where he was talking about using an American accent on House, and if I remember correctly, he said it was the Rs that ended up being the hardest to do consistently.  So... yeah.  It gets complicated.

Then there's us crazy English speakers with the "th" sound that we throw in everywhere, such as in this sentence, which trips up so many non-native speakers....  :)

Hs in general really.  Household just sounds dirty when I say it.  <_<

The BEST part about this? Is that on my first playthrough I accidentally clicked on him right before a battle and got that speech. So not only did he offer insincere sounding condolences, he delivered them in a bored tone while killing Shades and my character was just like... SERIOUSLY, Fenris? You're telling me this NOW? And then he finished the last sentence or two after the battle was over and my character was like. Um, yeah, okay, THANKS. Don't give up your day job for this human emotion thing.

I know... I saw the way Fenris tries to console you after Leandra's death on youtube and I just... I just snickered, because wow if people had him as an LI for their first playthrough they kinda got screwed with the emotional punch that I personally got after everything and suddenly... Anders shows up to comfort you. I loved that moment when he shows up to comfort you, it was so touching.

I got a question. I am doing my first Marian Hawke run. What romance should I pursue, friendly Anders or Rival Fenris?
Please try to be objective :)

I don't really think there's a way to be objective about this matter.

Seconded :lol:

Though I tried out Fenris's rivalrymance, and I do like it.  Especially with a mage Hawke.  It has a nice "I want you but I hate you" vibe without coming off as intense as some of Anders' rivalrymance stuff.  Still...Anders.  Anders x 1000.

Agreeing with this x1000. What is it about him? I have no idea. Varric is probably my favorite DA2 companion and Isabela is probably my favorite DA2 vocal performance if I had to pick, so why do I mostly hang out in here? Mysterious.

Yeah, I'm not sure there is a way to be objective about this. It's been argued about a lot in this thread. It seems to come down to taste.

Leaving my feelings out of this, I'll try to lay it out as best I can so you can decide. In the friendmance, you support the mage cause at his side and through that process, he and Justice fuse more because their goals are the same. In the rivalmance, you argue with him about the cause and so eventually he starts to doubt what he's fighting for. Rival Anders eventually comes in direct conflict with Justice.

So it mostly comes down to what type of relationship you want and what type of beliefs your new Hawke will have. If your new Hawke is pro-Circle/Templars, rivalmance seems the way to go. Or even if you are just really against his extremism. If your Hawke really believes in his cause, then go for a friendmance.

There are plenty more reasons to go either way, but like I said, it's really subjective. I personally hate one way, but I don't want to argue against other people doing it.

"English speaker" is hard enough to pronounce :P It's the "sh" which is difficult for me, since we don't have that in Finnish. We have really strong "r"s, that doesn't help either, but good thing you find it fascinating :lol:

This was totally OT, but so's everything.

Wait. You're saying that even if you romance Fenris he doesn't show up afterward like Anders does? All you get is the click conversation? Wow, that SUCKS. It meant so much to me/my character when Anders showed up all comforting and "I'm here for you, whatever you need." That was one of the best moments in the game. I'd always assumed Fenris and all the other LI's had their own cutscene for that.

Yeah agreed. I'm sooo glad I decided to romance Anders first, because honestly I couldn't decide, I just flirted with Fenris and Anders, but then after Act 1 I interpreted Varric's "don't remind me, I introduced them" line as the game flagging me as in an Anders romance so I decided I'd just go with it.

Later of course I found out the line is there regardless but still, the ending wouldn't have been the same at all if I hadn't been romancing Anders so I'm glad for my misinterpretation, hehe.

No, no, no, I didn't mean that XD

He DOES come to console you... or try. He just really sucked at it and it seemed obvious to me that he really didn't want to be there in the first place and has nothing really comforting to say.

No, he does show up. It all amounts to awkwardness and "I don't know what to say"/"It's pointless to say anything".

No, he does show up.  I don't really remember what he said, though.  I preferred Anders's comforting; it seemed more earnest and sweet while Fenris was more "I really don't know what to say but I should say something so here ya go."  Which is actually fitting for both characters, I suppose.

I thought the Fenris confort scene was really sweet, but only if you pick the "just say something" dialogue option

Oh Seb.  You heartless jerk.  XD  It took a few playthroughs for me to notice that he does have an ambient clickable dialogue about Leandra, something about adding Leandra's name to the prayer wall or something.  For the first few playthroughs, it always went like this and made me want to beat his head in:

::click::
Anders: Your mother... I'm so sorry.  I can't believe any mage would do such a thing.
::click::
Fenris: I cannot imagine what it must be like to lose your family.  Anything I say would be insufficient; I'm sorry.
::click::
Sebastian: I think Grandfather is smiling down at me now, to see me holding his bow.
Hawke and Me: <_<

Yeah in that case the awkwardness works.

I like Anders the most and Isabela's a close second. "Family isn't just the ones related to you." D'awww.

Here's a link of the post-death convos, for the curious. Fenris' isn't bad, he's just not really good at comforting xD
