I chose to interpret the "I heard what happened" as just the writers being lazy and wanting to cover their tails in case you didn't bring your LI to the quest.

Also, I never got the sack of bones line.  Varric was the one doing all the commenting.

EDIT for top:  Not an Anders pic, but y'all need to check out this tribute to Hawke and Anders if you haven't already.

Yup. I brought him with me, and he never said "I heard what happened." Just the above.

Honestly if I were in Hawke's situation Isabela's lines would be most comforting to me.

I admit, I've been really projecting and taking Hawke's situation personally since I've recently been through a similar experience sans loved one being turned into frankenstein's monster for twisted ritual, but Anders is the type of person I appreciated having around immediately afterwards, Isabela is the type I needed in weeks afterwards to cheer me up and Fenris is the one I appreciate for showing up at the funeral, but would have punched his face in if he'd met up with me immediately afterwards.

And uh, Merrill, I don't know.

Sorry for making this too personal.

Hmm I can see that.

I was so glad the consoling scenes were put in. I remember the first thing I thought once Leandra died was that I really wanted to run to Anders. Then, magically, the game made it happen. It was so perfect. I swear, I could have cried at that point.

I thought the way it was set up was perfect, with Gamlen harrassing Hawke about not doing enough first, then followed by the consoling scenes. I was hoping for a consoling scene or the opportunity to go talk to Anders, and then Gamlen walked in first, and I was so angry. The emotional yanking around from that part of the game was great.

I prefer to think of that as a terrified-for-Hawke, foot-in-mouth OhMakerdidIjustsaythat  comment, rather than a deliberate joke.

Me too.  XD  My Hawke is the absolute queen of putting her foot in her mouth and then being blissfully unaware of the horrified looks on everyone's faces, so she didn't give Anders a hard time about it.

It takes a lot to upset ittle miss "Be on the lookout for boneless women flopping through the streets".

I see Anders’ as Hawke soul mate, for better or worse.  No matter what sex you play, or which character you ultimately end up romancing, I believe he loves you madly and truly throughout the course of the game.  Thus the reason he’d “drown the whole world in blood, just to keep you safe”  (I adored him for saying this) even if you didn’t romance him.  And also the reason I think he’s 100 times more grumpy and hopeless if you don’t romance him.  It’s like the life just drains out of him. He also mentions he feels like he knows you, very early in the game, which is strange because you just met, but a definite mark of a soul mate connection.  And then later that you remind him of “someone” (the Warden).

I think his bi-sexual speech is telling: He does not feel that love should be restricted by the body you inhabit, he loves the soul for the souls sake.  In your case, he loves YOUR soul – the spark you put into all of your characters.  He loved your Warden, even though he never acted on it, and now he loves your Hawke no matter what sex you play, or faction you ultimately support. He can't help himself.

It’s beautiful and heartbreaking, and a huge part of the reason I could never bring myself to accept giving Kirkwall the justice it needed, or Anders the death he yearned for in the end.  Because I knew, no matter what I’d done, he would never turn his back on me – never see me killed.

Here’s how I see the “You should have trusted me” scene playing out for my Hawke:

Hawke stood behind Anders, assessing, and weighing, her own inner turmoil battling with her love for the sad, broken man sitting slumped before her.  Yet for all the turmoil in her, all of the questioning, she knew, had always known how, this would play out.

Quietly stepping around him, she knelt, touched his hand and whispered fiercely: “I’d drown the whole world in blood just to keep you safe.”

He finally met her eyes then, confusion warring on his features. “No…!”

“You can’t die – I will not allow it.  If I have to kill every person here, I WILL keep you safe.  You will live.”

Anders eyes burned into hers and his voice was harsh, and grief stricken when he spoke: “No, love, you can’t do this.  This is MY choice, and the burden. I will not see you damned for me…”

“Your burdens, are my burdens, and your damnation mine” she whispered, before her eyes hardened, “and next time you think to do something so rash without involving me, you’d best remember that.”

"You would do no less for me.  So for now, live.  Live for me.... please.  I can't do this alone." Her voice cracked at the end, and she could see acceptence there finally in his eyes.

Giving his hand a quick squeeze, she stood, and  positioned herself between Anders and those waiting, proclaiming quietly and firmly: "Anders lives."

Yes! The whole scene with Gamlen, I was like I DON'T CARE I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS OMG WHERE IS ANDERS? NEED NAO. And then the scene with Gamlen ended and like magic, there was Anders, and it was the most perfect thing ever. I think that moment might have been the most rewarding for me in the entire game, just because I/my character needed it so badly and he delivered exactly what I needed.

Hmm, could have sworn that the door was closed the last time I had that scene. Maybe I should go load it up again just to check...

I just looked at a few Youtube videos and sometimes it was open, sometimes closed. I swear it's been open both times I romanced him.

Well, it's not as much fun if you don't do it yourself! In any case, I did it just now, and I can confirm that the door was closed afterward. Apparently, I got the more modest version of Anders. *chuckle* He was friendmanced in my case. Maybe he goes exhibitionist if you rivalmance him?

And in the interests of science, I also redid the kissing scene. Maybe because I used the default femHawke, but I'm quite sure that her eyes were fuly closed all the way through the actual kiss (she starts opening them after Anders pulls away though). Hmm, it occurs to me now that maybe I should have FRAPSed that, but I've never signed up for a youtube account anyway, so meh.

Hm I'm not a big fan of 30 Seconds to Mars but that song's lyrics are eerily appropriate and the video is pretty well done (though it would benefit from shortening to give it a tighter narrative).

Can't say that I personally believe in soulmates; I do believe in true love because I'm a hopelessly romantic sap, but I've never believed in a one true love.  That being said, I think depending on the Hawke, Anders and Hawke can have that rare instant connection.

It definitely happened to my Hawke and Anders.  I still wasn't sure who I was going to romance my first playthrough, and I'd already done some flirting with Fenris.  Then she and Anders locked eyes, and it was like they'd both been struck by lightning.

And then I thought, "OH GOD THIS IS GOING TO END BADLY" and banged my head against the keyboard <_<  Stupid adorable apostate.

My jaw dropped when I realized what was happening - what a terrifying thing to do. He murdered innocent people (and even those sympathetic to his cause) when there was a chance to avoid bloodshed. Never mind that he betrayed my trust in a serious way. I half expected the demon to demand Anders' death in response to killing the Grand Cleric because my own sense of justice was outraged.

Mages are not treated fairly in this world, but there must be balance to keep their power in check. I was sad that there were so few dialogue options that let me articulate that opinion. In the end, I stayed with Anders in the hopes that later I will find a way to free him from Vengeance.

I think that each Mage born should have a Templar guardian assigned to them, to watch for corruption and if it becomes necessary, to stop that corruption before it gets out of hand. That way a Mage can actually maybe go out into the world, see a forest, see the ocean, see other cities, meet people, do some good with their Templar partner in tow. That's how I wrote my own fantasy series in regard to Mages and the like (Dragon Age: Origins gave me plenty of new ideas). That could be a solution, could it not?

It doesn't surprise me if it was a glitch. Margaret Hawke's game had bugs all over the place.

But he did say the bones line. Margaret took it for gallows humor, even if she did give him a crushed, wide-green-eyed look.

I don't believe in soulmates but I do agree that Anders loves Hawke no matter how you play the game, and I like that about his character.

Same happened for my Hawke.  And I already knew it would end badly since I spoiled myself silly the week before.

It was beautiful, heart wrenching train wreck.

I see several flaws with this.

1) What if your Templar is a collossal ******?
2) What if your Templar and you become close (either friendly, or romantically)? That's certainly likely to happen (assuming #1 isn't the case) and would no doubt skew said Templar's judgment.
3) Big Brother is not fun.

I'm glad I checked this thread out today. I have been wondering how Dragon Age II ends. I've tried three playthroughs and haven't been able to finish any of them. As soon as I get to the third act, or even halfway througth the second act, my character can no longer fight for some reason. They slow right down and before I know it the time it takes my character to strike a blow, enemies have hit her five or six times. She just can't move for some reason. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? I am really getting pissed off that I can't see how the story ends for myself. Arghh!

That's a good interpretation, and I can totally picture his mortified expression after blurting that out.

I figure he said it for my Hawke in a sympathetic, "I know you don't like showing when you're afraid or upset, so I'll try to make you laugh so you don't end up crying," kind of way.
When her entire life is falling apart around her, my Hawke just gets more flippant and blasé, so she can pretend that there's never anything wrong and she doesn't feel a thing and stop looking at her like that, okay, there's nothing wrong.

Do you have either Isabela or Sebastian at 100% friend? There's a bug with their buffs that causes this.

Sounds like you have the nasty Isabella glitch.

Isabela's friendship benefit gives Hawke +5% attack speed, but it's glitched so that every time you take her out of the party or load a save without her, it removes +5% attack speed.  The attack speed removal stacks and eventually you notice your character is slower than molasses.

The only 100% effective way to avoid the glitch is to rival Isabela or not friend her.  You can try to avoid the worst of the effects by loading an earlier save and never removing her from the party EVER.

I do like to think Anders is a lot more stable than Fenris though. I know that can be easily argued because of his obvious downward spiral, but he knows to to empathise alot more, and has some sort of past that wasn't all one hellish nightmare from which there is no escape. He's had fun, he's laughed, cried, had his heartbroken and certianly broekn some hearts, he's lost friends and gined some too, he's been through a life that Fenris never had, and I think that makes him alot more stable.

Obviously not in the end, but you catch my drift, and I suppose Justice doesn't help at all :(
