I'm glad I checked this thread out today. I have been wondering how Dragon Age II ends. I've tried three playthroughs and haven't been able to finish any of them. As soon as I get to the third act, or even halfway througth the second act, my character can no longer fight for some reason. They slow right down and before I know it the time it takes my character to strike a blow, enemies have hit her five or six times. She just can't move for some reason. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? I am really getting pissed off that I can't see how the story ends for myself. Arghh!

Do you have either Isabela or Sebastian at 100% friend? There's a bug with their buffs that causes this.

If you are at 100% friend and go home or to the qunari compound where Isabella is removed from your party forcibly, her speed buff with be exponentially removed from your Hawke.

Can't say that I personally believe in soulmates; I do believe in true love because I'm a hopelessly romantic sap, but I've never believed in a one true love.  That being said, I think depending on the Hawke, Anders and Hawke can have that rare instant connection.

It definitely happened to my Hawke and Anders.  I still wasn't sure who I was going to romance my first playthrough, and I'd already done some flirting with Fenris.  Then she and Anders locked eyes, and it was like they'd both been struck by lightning.

And then I thought, "OH GOD THIS IS GOING TO END BADLY" and banged my head against the keyboard <_<  Stupid adorable apostate.

Yes. I went in spoiler free, so I had no idea what would happen and I also had no idea who I would romance. Anders happened to be the first companion I recruited, and my Hawke was completely lost right away. It actually took me completely by surprise.

Sounds like you have the nasty Isabella glitch.

Isabela's friendship benefit gives Hawke +5% attack speed, but it's glitched so that every time you take her out of the party or load a save without her, it removes +5% attack speed.  The attack speed removal stacks and eventually you notice your character is slower than molasses.

The only 100% effective way to avoid the glitch is to rival Isabela or not friend her.  You can try to avoid the worst of the effects by loading an earlier save and never removing her from the party EVER.

Of course that means also like, never entering your own mansion.

I do like to think Anders is a lot more stable than Fenris though. I know that can be easily argued because of his obvious downward spiral, but he knows to to empathise alot more, and has some sort of past that wasn't all one hellish nightmare from which there is no escape. He's had fun, he's laughed, cried, had his heartbroken and certianly broekn some hearts, he's lost friends and gined some too, he's been through a life that Fenris never had, and I think that makes him alot more stable.

Obviously not in the end, but you catch my drift, and I suppose Justice doesn't help at all :(

Maybe in Act 1. Maybe. By Act 3 Fenris has experienced some emotional growth while Anders is spiraling downwards and Fenris is clearly the more stable one.

Made an inappropriate joke about finding more than a sack of bones, too.

I prefer to think of that as a terrified-for-Hawke, foot-in-mouth OhMakerdidIjustsaythat  comment, rather than a deliberate joke.

That's a good interpretation, and I can totally picture his mortified expression after blurting that out.

I figure he said it for my Hawke in a sympathetic, "I know you don't like showing when you're afraid or upset, so I'll try to make you laugh so you don't end up crying," kind of way.
When her entire life is falling apart around her, my Hawke just gets more flippant and blasé, so she can pretend that there's never anything wrong and she doesn't feel a thing and stop looking at her like that, okay, there's nothing wrong.

My Hawke is a mix between that and being legitimately crazy.

I think the line that sums her up best is in the Captain's Condolences quest to Aveline: "I have a smile on my face.  That should be enough for most people."

I see several flaws with this.

1) What if your Templar is a collossal ******?
2) What if your Templar and you become close (either friendly, or romantically)? That's certainly likely to happen (assuming #1 isn't the case) and would no doubt skew said Templar's judgment.
3) Big Brother is not fun.

Yeeeeeah, um. I had RPs where scenario 2 happened. In the biblical sense. I am such a sucker for the templar/mage dynamic.

I think it works if you just don't save inside the mansion.  Before saving, leave the mansion with her in the party and save right outside.  It's a pain.

I chose to interpret the "I heard what happened" as just the writers being lazy and wanting to cover their tails in case you didn't bring your LI to the quest.

Also, I never got the sack of bones line.  Varric was the one doing all the commenting.

EDIT for top:  Not an Anders pic, but y'all need to check out this tribute to Hawke and Anders if you haven't already.

Awesumness!

A few scenes in there I've never seen before. Like at 2.10 Anders has Flemeth walking up behind him...I wonder when that was.

Also, don't remember where, it looks like there was a part where Hawke was on fire.

2.13 The grand cleric blessing Anders I think.

2.42 I have no idea where that takes place.

3.01 part of rivalmance maybe?? or mod? 4.55...hmmm thinking some of these might be fenris/anders mods...5.00 the same...

Ohh and also, wanted to share a wonderful fic I started reading!! What Is Justice by Amondra

If you have the PC version of Dragon Age II, you can use this mod as a quick solution until the game's patched.  It replaces her friendship buff with her rivalry one.

You'll also need the pyGFF 0.4.9a Saved Game Editor to fix any existing savegames.

lol This is true. But my "Templars" aren't "Templars" as we know them to be. There's no fanatic devotion to the church (first of all, my story has no church), they are just people born with their own unique powers. They can't cast fireballs or anything but they can (like Dragon Age Templars) dispel magic, friendly and hostile. There are zealouts, however, that belong to their own little dark order (like the Black Aja in Wheele of Time), thinking the gods are on their side. In my story, though, the gods favor the "Mages" not the "Templars," as Mages are born of the mixing of their blood with the lesser races (demigods, if you will). No mere "human" has access to magical talent, just those born of the bloodline of the gods, and not all of them do have powers. So they're not "Templars," they're just people born with the ability to dispel magic.

I see Anders’ as Hawke soul mate, for better or worse.  No matter what sex you play, or which character you ultimately end up romancing, I believe he loves you madly and truly throughout the course of the game.  Thus the reason he’d “drown the whole world in blood, just to keep you safe”  (I adored him for saying this) even if you didn’t romance him.  And also the reason I think he’s 100 times more grumpy and hopeless if you don’t romance him.  It’s like the life just drains out of him. He also mentions he feels like he knows you, very early in the game, which is strange because you just met, but a definite mark of a soul mate connection.  And then later that you remind him of “someone” (the Warden).

I think his bi-sexual speech is telling: He does not feel that love should be restricted by the body you inhabit, he loves the soul for the souls sake.  In your case, he loves YOUR soul – the spark you put into all of your characters.  He loved your Warden, even though he never acted on it, and now he loves your Hawke no matter what sex you play, or faction you ultimately support. He can't help himself.

It’s beautiful and heartbreaking, and a huge part of the reason I could never bring myself to accept giving Kirkwall the justice it needed, or Anders the death he yearned for in the end.  Because I knew, no matter what I’d done, he would never turn his back on me – never see me killed.

Here’s how I see the “You should have trusted me” scene playing out for my Hawke:

Hawke stood behind Anders, assessing, and weighing, her own inner turmoil battling with her love for the sad, broken man sitting slumped before her.  Yet for all the turmoil in her, all of the questioning, she knew, had always known how, this would play out.

Quietly stepping around him, she knelt, touched his hand and whispered fiercely: “I’d drown the whole world in blood just to keep you safe.”

He finally met her eyes then, confusion warring on his features. “No…!”

“You can’t die – I will not allow it.  If I have to kill every person here, I WILL keep you safe.  You will live.”

Anders eyes burned into hers and his voice was harsh, and grief stricken when he spoke: “No, love, you can’t do this.  This is MY choice, and the burden. I will not see you damned for me…”

“Your burdens, are my burdens, and your damnation mine” she whispered, before her eyes hardened, “and next time you think to do something so rash without involving me, you’d best remember that.”

"You would do no less for me.  So for now, live.  Live for me.... please.  I can't do this alone." Her voice cracked at the end, and she could see acceptence there finally in his eyes.

Giving his hand a quick squeeze, she stood, and  positioned herself between Anders and those waiting, proclaiming quietly and firmly: "Anders lives."

<sigh>

I do love me some Anders!! Image IPB

Wow... Very beautiful. Kudos!

The scene I imagined for my Hawke plays out differently (the available dialogue didn't do justice to the scene itself, sadly), mainly because, being a mage like Anders himself, he really believed in the revolution, but the theme is the same: the lengths we'd go for the one we love.

Thank you! :) I just hope it isn't my drivers or something. That would totally suck, as I don't know how to go about updating drivers or anything like that. I'm not very computer savvy. I use them to write and to play games. As long as that works, I'm good. :)

I wouldn't say that mine is crazy so much she has issues lingering under the surface that she will refuse to talk about to anyone ever. It might make her act a little nuts sometimes, but she has her reasons, honest!

Really, after all Hawke has been through, s/he's had good reason to snap. The absolutely gruesome murder of Leandra would be plenty, let alone everything that happens before or afterwards. The Condolences line you quoted is, just as you say, perfect for that kind of character.

I thought the line was a bit too -- share-y, almost.

I guess it's because it's Aveline. She's like a sister.

Welcome   Didn't want to derail the thread, so I just PMed you a step-by-step guide for getting rid of the bug on PC.  If anyone else wants to know, lemme know and I'll PM you too.

My Hawke's the same way.  If anything, she's worse than Anders because she's more ruthless than Anders.

Just don't bring Seb or Isabela with you for anything. Ever. It's how I've managed to avoid the Isabela bug, Sebastian on the otherhand... it explained a lot why my party was so damn squishy by the end game.

Oh, wow. Being from a family where we humor to hide that we have, you know, feelings, this line is amazing. It's how I pictured sarcastic Hawke (which is the only one I've played.) I didn't realize there was a line actually in-game that summed it up so well.

Bah, I need me my duel wielding 'Bela. She is SOOO deadly. But truly, I have Anders buffing us with Haste most of the time, so I haven't noticed any slowing down as yet. Mind you I only got Isabela to 100% friend at the end of Act II, so maybe it hasn't happened yet. I'll try not saving in the mansion and keeping her in my party all the time from now on.
