Here's at least one reason (besides Anders) why DA2 is better than DAO. I don't get stuck in the damn Fade for 2 hours in DA2. ugh.
I am replaying DAO to get a different saved game to import. The combat is so clunky and I hate being mute!

I actually thought I'd dislike a voiced protagonist. Then I played The Witcher/DA2, and loaded up NWN2 for nostalgia and was like "wtf, silent protagonist is really jarring!"

Also, the "Skip the Fade" pc mod is amazing. I actually liked the Fade, the first time. After that it was just...meh, because I'm a completionist and I have to check EVERY ROOM. EVERY. SINGLE. ROOM. So it took forever.

Man, I hate Sister Petrice.

She is delightfully hateful. I love hating her.

Oh, Petrice.
She has the (dubious) honor of being the third person I enjoy raging at the heavens about.

"EDISON!"
"FREUD!"
"PETRICE!"

...Yeah, like that, only with more fist-shaking. And a dramatic thunderclap.

Elthina is a disgrace. The only time she seems to show her face outside the chantry is to dissuade debate. It was so satisfying to tell her that she was useless. It wasn't until the Sister Nightingale quest when she asked Hawke to downplay the events in Kirkwall that I really loathed her. It was like... ok, you're finally admitting that there is a big problem here.. and instead of trying to do something even slightly proactive, you're asking me to help you maintain this false idea that nothing is wrong? Pfft. Crazy desperate mages everywhere, even the templars being scared of their own loony Knight Commander, and Orsino having wet dreams over reanimating corpses? NOPE, EVERYTHING'S FINE HERE!! :P If Elthina spent half as much time forming an opinion as she did playing mommy to Sebastian, maybe something could have been done. Though, she never would have approved of full freedom for the mages, so the BOOM was inevitable. She was the Eamon of DA2 for me where every time she opened her mouth it was like "words words words, meaningless words".

I admit that when things came to a head with the Qunari and then the battle of wills, so to speak, in the square between Orsino and Merideth, I started to wonder if Elthina was actually pulling all of the strings around her and was making a grasp for power herself, out of the chaos.

I think that gives her too much credit.  She's a good, kind-hearted, compassionate, and well-intentioned person.  But she's none too quick on the uptake.

I don't know.  I can see that in regards to the Meredith/Orsino stuff, but after paying more attention to Petrice and the qunari conflict in later playthroughs, it really has me wondering just what is going on in Elthina's head.  I don't think she was making any kind of grasp for power, because if that were the case, she's ALREADY supposed to be more powerful than Meredith, Orsino, and even the viscount.  She's the one who allowed her office to deteriorate to the powerless state it seemed to be in by Act 3.

But I wonder if Elthina doesn't have her own strong opinions and a hidden agenda that she furthers by just sitting back.  Petrice is the perfect example of this.  Petrice mentions that she'd been preaching anti-qunari stuff in every sermon for years.  Elthina would HAVE to notice that.  Petrice even got "promoted" between Acts 1 and 2, which indicates that Elthina was paying some attention to her during that time.  Elthina would truly have to be a dingbat not to notice Petrice's very obvious attempts to sway public opinion against the qunari.  She had to know that nothing good would come of that, but she does nothing.  NOTHING.  Why?

sry this is a few pages back but this thread just grows so fast.
Re the Qunari thing, you can actually tell Elthina about Petrice. I can't remember the exact reply but it is along the lines of  - the right path isn't always the righteous one and she'll step in when the time is right.

Ahaha, at least you're not forced to retrieve a holy relic to save Petrice. Srsly, I would rather have made Teagan Bann of Redcliffe.

I wished SO MUCH that I could just slap some sense into Teagan.

No, Teagan.  I'm not going to go clambering around in secluded mountains filled with crazy human-sacrificing-lunatics so I can desecrate some lady's grave and steal her remains so we can wake up the Arl.  You are going to get off your lazy ass and assume the role of Arl, and we are going to use this to build sympathy for our case.

Keep Jowan and the elf in the tavern for proof of Loghain's involvement in not only Eamons poisoning but Blood magic.

I never really liked Teagan. I prefer Eamon.

With that being said, I'd have liked the option to make Teagan Bann too.

THIS. So much this. My Hawke by this stage was pretty damned angry. She'd been "purple" for most of the game, but after mum got frankenstiened she started to lean much more to the red. The Sister Nightingale Quest was pretty much whens she started saying things like "Sod you all, let the Divine call a stupid exalted march, you're just too dumb to live!"

I don't think the boom was inevitable, and I doubt Anders would have went so far had something been done sooner.  Everything seemed to push Anders over the edge in act 3, and I think Elthina had the ability to prevent him from blowing the Chantry if she actually stepped up and worked out the Mage/Templar problem before then.

I like Elthina too, but on subsequent playthroughs...I don't know. Inaction is still a choice, and it's one she made over and over. It's so cliched, but with power comes responsibility. She had power in Kirkwall. But instead of stepping up to her responsibilities, she hid her head in the sand and just refused to deal with it.

I admit that when things came to a head with the Qunari and then the battle of wills, so to speak, in the square between Orsino and Merideth, I started to wonder if Elthina was actually pulling all of the strings around her and was making a grasp for power herself, out of the chaos. Because she did make the decision to stand by and let the Maker's will decide...and me, I'm thinking, "what the hell, woman, do something." Foolish priests, always thinking the Maker will step in and fix things. :)

I adore Elthina for telling Meredith to go back to her office like a good little girl.   And on my plays when I'm taking the middle road I love that she insists she's fighting for peace, if that's not too much of an oxymoron.

I don't know about anyone else, but seeing Elthina say this just makes me think that maybe she knows something. Eh, I'm probably clutching at straws to make her seem less utterly ineffectual.

Anyway, just thought I'd drop that thought in there!

Here’s how I see the “You should have trusted me” scene playing out for my Hawke:

Hawke stood behind Anders, assessing, and weighing, her own inner turmoil battling with her love for the sad, broken man sitting slumped before her.  Yet for all the turmoil in her, all of the questioning, she knew, had always known how, this would play out.

Quietly stepping around him, she knelt, touched his hand and whispered fiercely: “I’d drown the whole world in blood just to keep you safe.”

He finally met her eyes then, confusion warring on his features. “No…!”

“You can’t die – I will not allow it.  If I have to kill every person here, I WILL keep you safe.  You will live.”

Anders eyes burned into hers and his voice was harsh, and grief stricken when he spoke: “No, love, you can’t do this.  This is MY choice, and the burden. I will not see you damned for me…”

“Your burdens, are my burdens, and your damnation mine” she whispered, before her eyes hardened, “and next time you think to do something so rash without involving me, you’d best remember that.”

"You would do no less for me.  So for now, live.  Live for me.... please.  I can't do this alone." Her voice cracked at the end, and she could see acceptence there finally in his eyes.

Giving his hand a quick squeeze, she stood, and  positioned herself between Anders and those waiting, proclaiming quietly and firmly: "Anders lives."

<sigh>
I do love me some Anders!! Image IPB

I am slow to reply to this, but I want you to know that you are making me cry here. *sniff* I don't believe in soul mates in real life, but in a story world, sure.

*is a huge sap*

Since I was unspoilered my first run (and headed straight for Anders as fast as my rogue-y legs could carry me) I was sucked up, fell for him madly, couldn't finish finding his ingredients fast enough, and then...then...it went more like this:

[Me, screaming, all in one long breath]: I trusted you!  I loved you, I helped you, I lived with you for months and you lied to me the WHOLE TIME!  You killed the only reasonable woman in the entire freaking town and dozens of other people and you used me to HELP YOU BUILD THE BOMB!  You want me to kill you, you heartless, soulless bastard?  [stabbity]  There!  I hope you feel better because I sure as hell don't!  How dare you lie there looking like you're just waiting for me to leave before you hop up and run off to abominate somewhere else!  Why can't I decapitate you with my freaking daggers?!

My Hawke was in no shape to fight Orsino after that.  She sided with the mages and that ass went all Harvester and she wanted to just drop her daggers and say, "Whatever.  I don't care any more.  You're all just using me."

Although I'm a huge fan of Petrice getting what's coming to her, it also speaks volumes about Elthina and her damn uselessness.  It's possibly another example of Elthina having her own opinions that may not agree with the Chantry's and letting her damnable inaction serve her own desires.

She allowed one of her charges to be murdered right there in the Chantry?  I'm of the opinion that she saw the qunari lurking in the shadows and knew it was going to happen, just from how utterly not surprised she was by Petrice's death mere moments later.  Yes, Petrice deserved it, but didn't Elthina just say that Petrice would be tried in court according to Chantry law?  Seriously, STAND UP FOR SOMETHING, woman!

I saw this differently.  I don't believe she knew the qunari was there at all.  I don't think she didn't care, or that she secretly wanted Petrice killed on the spot.  I think she was just unflappable.  I actually admired her composure at that moment, and I am not an Elthina fan.  For those who ask, how did she not notice a hulking qunari giant sneaking into the Chantry, I ask how did nobody notice a hulking qunari skulking around the city?  It's not like he teleported in there.  The qunari has inexplicable powers of sneakiness.

This, almost exactly, except I didn't consider Elthina quite as reasonable.  And there was a whole lot of grief mixed in with the rage, for the innocents, but also for Anders and herself.  Augh!  Stupid Anders!   WHY YOU MAKE ME KILL YOU!?!!!??!!11!!!!1

Who is that qunari in this sketch?  A Saarebas without the mask?  Poor Saarebas.  Stupid qunari.  "Magic is contagious!  Foreigners are corrupting!"  The Qun could be so great if got rid of the sh***y parts of it.  Which would be large chunks, but still.  We need a Reformed Qun School of Thought, and once the bloody civil war settles down, Par Vollen will be SO much nicer.

edit: Yes, it is an apostate Saarebas.  Should have read the artist's notes.  Oh, Saarebas apostate!  I hug you!

You guuuuys!  Yahtzee talks about the homosexual relationships in DA2 in Extra Punctuation this week, but more important he talks about our dear, dear Anders.

Here's the link.

Yahtzee ripped DA2 a new one in his review, but he apparently loves Anders and that makes me SO HAPPY.

I like how he refers to his Hawke as an "old-fashioned, monogamous old queen."
