This may have been addressed in the previous 600 some-odd pages, but I just can't keep up anymore.

Is there ever a scenario during "Dissent" where you DON'T get that "star" response that shuts down Justice and saves Anders from killing the mage girl?

I'm just wondering because I've seen lots of people refer to it on the forums as if his killing her is inevitable for them. I could understand that back on my first playthrough, where Anders was nigh 100% friendship, so I thought Sarcastic Rogue Lady Hawke got that "star" option simply because of the Power of Friendship and all that.

So, Agressive Warrior Male Hawke just finished that quest. He's been largely avoiding Anders entirely because a) he has no problem with the Circle and B) if I, as a player, am to ever resist the siren call of Anders, I have to basically keep all interaction to a bare minimum. Thus, Anders was only maybe a few points into rivalry with Pro-Templar Boy. I figured that either a) having rivalry points or B) not having much points period might force this character into a situation where Anders cannot stop from killing the girl. Yet, the "star" option was there, albeit the exact phrasing differed for Aggressive Hawke than Sarcastic Hawke had. But, the most unlikeliest of characters (IMO) was still able to talk Anders/Justice down from that window ledge of Awfulness.

So... that REALLY makes me wonder just how someone would NOT have that option? The only similarity I can see between my Sarcastic Rogue Lady Hawke and my Aggressive Warrior Male Hawke is that both explored all possible "investigate" options in all conversations. Maybe if a Hawke doesn't "investigate", they miss some important tidbit of info that ends up becoming the key to calming Anders down on that quest?

Also, I may be 100 pages late, but I really cannot see how some people think Anders looks ugly. Seriously. It's impossible for me to see it. Heck, I don't even entirely understand how most think he looks like a hobo unless it's just simply because of all that random bandaging on some of the sleeves and pant legs. Either I am totally missing something or I just have incredibly low standards of personal grooming, 'cuz his hair and scruff look fine, sexy, and non-hobo-ish to me. *is so confuzed*

EDIT: Wow, haven't got TOP in a thread in forever. I don't remember who did this fanart, but it's one of my favorites.

@DragonRacer I've wondered the same thing. I know I haven't always exhausted all investigative options and that star is always there for me, so that can't be it.

I had a lot of ambivalence about Anders my first play through-- I was attracted to him but I knew he was going to break my heart. So I didn't romance him...and even as a friend, he broke my heart.

Jennifer Brandes Hepler has a lot of soul to write this character.

Anyway, my second play through, I romanced him, dived in, and it was so much fun. And he still broke my heart.

He got under my skin so I put a video together about the romance, with the song "Bad" by U2 in the background. That about sums up the relationship to me.

If anyone wants to see:

He does look a bit less groomed than in DAA, IMO. Hair is more scruffy and he's always flustered and a little... shiney, lol. I guess it's part of his personality change. In DAA he took great care of his looks according to the Codex, after all. But I don't think he looks any more hobo than most people.

It's seriously like you have to be completely clueless not to get it or something. Because I surely thought a pro-templar, almost-no-points-whatsoever relationship with Anders would lead to Inevitable Mage Girl Death, but not so. I'm thinking if THAT doesn't lead to "no star", then nothing does.

Maybe some folks just... didn't pick the star option, for whatever reason? I, myself, find it utterly impossible not to pick those. I sometimes have to re-load a save just to see what the other dialogue options would have done because I am such a "there's a star, gotta pick it!" sort of person.

I've heard mostly because of RP reasons they don't pick it. That's the only thing I have heard to explain not choosing the star option.

I'm almost thinking it's just me. Because when I think about it, my dad always had that scruffy look going. And I think my husband looks his best when he's rockin' the scruffy look (cue the "Oh, God, I married my dad" revelation, lol).

So, yeah, Anders is a-okay in my book. Now, if he was rockin' some gigantic, ZZ Top-worthy beard, then I could see the hobo angle better.

I had it in the friendship path, not romanced. And in a rivarly path romanced, around 75% was enough. I didn't think it could be there, I even added it to the wikia since it wasn't reported. It was fun to read "You work for me, calm down and don't do anything if I don't tell you to do so" sorta line xD I honestly panicked and thought it wasn't going to work and the girl would die.

I think the only scenario in which you don't have the star option is if you didn't bother at all with friendship or rivarly point with Anders....

For me, the scruff comes from a few things: the stubble, the hollow cheeks and the hastily tied-back hair straight off, and then the ragged grey smock thing and his dirty neck-cloth. The missing buckles on the lower half of his tan coat add to it, as do the random bits of bandage that are tied here and there, as if to tighten loose clothes or to hide holes or worn fabric.

Since we can't see the actual costume in person, it's open to interpretation. But whenever I see him in his first outfit, I can't help but think, "And that's my Raggedy Doctor."

You're not the only one! I don't get 'hobo' vibes at all either. I just think he's a little more unkempt than in DAA - but that's hardly surprising considering all of the stuff going on in his life. I can't imagine he doesn't take care of himself, what would his patients think?

I dunno, perhaps there are fewer people who like the scruffy than previously thought?

Maybe just not enough to trigger the star option in either path. Maybe someone just didn't use him, aside his personal quests.
I know it is easy to get points with him just bringing him along because he is so awesome (and a healer), but you can, I suppose, just not get enough points in a path (messing up mixing frindly and rivarly maybe) or not get points at all not bringing him through the side-quests and story :\\

Wow, I knew I was fairly unobservant, but I'm almost ashamed of myself on this one. Totally didn't notice the dirty neck-cloth and I just thought the bottom buckles simply weren't fastened, not missing. Then again, it's impossible for me to stop staring at his pretty, pretty brown eyes and fabulous jawline and scruff, so he could be wearing a giant frickin' yellow chicken outfit  for all I'd care/notice.

LOL. Like I said, I seem to have a very low requirement of personal grooming. If you don't smell icky, you're probably just fine with me. Image IPB

Also, I CANNOT believe I've not told you this very good and fitting song to add to the Anders Playlist, but it played on the radio today and reminded me... "Blow Up the Outside World" by Soundgarden.

Regarding the star option in Dissent, my first character didn't choose it because I didn't realize I wasn't going to be able to backtrack - a duh moment on my part. Then when everything happened I decided to let it stand rather than reload because it added an unexpected dimension to our relationship. Eve Hawke now saw first hand how dangerous he could be.

With subsequent characters she does stop him, just because the guilt carries is extremely heartbreaking.

I don't think he looks like a hobo. I work in San Francisco and I would love it if the hobos there looked like Anders!

I fear I'm on the hobo train, as well.  He just looks like he doesn't have two coppers to rub together, try as hard as he might to look respectable.  After DA:A that struck me as a clear sign of how much he'd changed, that he was so thin and scruffy.  He clearly had larger things on his mind.

Then again, Alistair looked fat and happy so yay, Warden!  :o
[Edited for typo, then to add more.]

As for the star option, the first time I thought the olive-branch response fit my Hawke better.  I didn't know what the star meant or I certainly would have gone for it.  RTFM, indeed.

The only person I've gotten to talk to about it is my husband. Thankfully he just dislikes Anders and doesn't hate him. Granted, he seems to dislike every guy I romance in BW games on principle I think.

Mine only hates Anders. He's joking, I hope, cause he's being a big martyr about it :wizard:

So doesn't your husband romance anyone in games?

My SO likes Anders as far as I can tell. I *think* he liked all the companions. He romanced Izzy.

But he also played a Spirit Healer/Force mage so I don't think he used Ser Pouts-a-lot very much.

again pages leap ahead.
My hubby romanced Izzy and stabbed Anders in the back :crying:  Though he did qualify it by saying he didn't hate him, but thought it was what he wanted and he was putting him out of his misery.

These are hilarious as usual. I love Isabela trying to seduce Bianca again.
