I think the problem is less that you cannot flirt with Orsino, and more that there isn't a Mage equivilant of Cullen. Orsino needed a second in command, a Wynne to his Irving. Only hotter.

Yup! I'm not sure about Friendship path Merrill, but rivalry path you just take responsibility for what happened in the cave and they let you leave. So long as you don't return with Merrill (any other party is fine) they are safe as houses. Marethari always dies though.
Not sure who would fit the bill in the game, I think a new character would have been needed. Unless they took a character like Ella or Allain (sp) and changed them quite drastically. Ohhh it should have been Finn! He should have been transfered to Kirkwall after the events of Witch Hunt. :>
Edit: Damn. Now I really wish Finn was in the game.
