But if you want to use the more sinister or evil aspects of it like mind control then you'd have to strike up a deal with a demon to learn it.
It's what I'm thinking now, but Orsino did claim before he turned into a Harvester that he had never used blood magic and that was... A pretty specific thing he did do.
But I may be missing an entire point in this.
Unless Blood Mages have their own secret clubhouse where they teach it to each other. Complete with handshakes and secret passwords, even!

While I'm not Adam Howden, I KNOW I laugh at this thread sometimes. I'm also scared and shocked, too. But these things applies to the Fenris thread as well.
In conclusion, all I can say is that you all please continue to be awesome.

It's so rare, that often the only way you can learn blood magic is from a demon.
But Jowan learns it from books (or seems to) because Irving pulls them from the shelves. Anders mentions that you can discover blood magic by accident (he might have been joking, it's a convo with Merrill) and there are various types of blood magic that sorta -- slip under the radar. The Joining, for example, is blood magic. I'd argue that what the Templars do with phylacteries is blood magic, too.
In my head canon, papa Hawke learned blood magic in the Circle far more subtly than Jowand and taught his oldest kid it in case the Templars should come for him or mom and little sibs and it was a "Well you're ****ed anways, might as well" sort of thing.

D'aaaw I just entered hightown from the Hawke estate and Anders said "it's still hard to think of this place as my home." in the mostvoice.
D'aaaw. I never heard that one.
Now I have to.
One time I clicked on Anders in the Hawke estate and he said: It's not a pretty home, but at least it's clean.
I was like: Thanks you ungrateful ho-bag!
Plus he's the one leaving his dirty socks everywhere for Hawke to pick up!

I think it has more to do with the fact that blood magic is forbidden, and those who practice it are put to death.
So the Chantry probably destroyed all records of blood magic in most areas, leaving demons as the only method of learning for most.
I'd assume in Tevinter, you can learn as an apprentice to a magister (without demons being involved).
My backstory for Hawke is that Malcolm was a bloodmage, and she learnt it from him. Since I never saw her making any demon-deals.

On my most recent playthrough, I actually managed to keep a straight face during the Jenga scene until I heard, "Maker NOOOOOOOO!"
Then I was lost to a fit of giggles. It was so hard to regain composure so I could enjoy anything else in the scene.
My boyfriend doesn't have Seb downloaded, so I have to supply the obligatory "Maker NOOOOOOOOO!" for him. He thought I was serious the first time, so I had to show him the scene on my computer so he could appreciate the full ridiculosity of it.
Seriously, whoever makes a ytmd out of that will get sainthood in my book. I need that or the equivalent of a Vader 'noooo' button in my life.

I do too, so you know what I did this weekend? I uninstalled the DLC and DA2 from my PS3, then reinstalled just DA2, started two brand new Hawke's just so I can have that back in my game. Embarrassing, I know

I would have to agree. Blood Magic doesn't seem to be so hard that you HAVE to learn from a demon, just they seem to be the only ones now who know how to use Blood magic, aside from a few mages and a couple books. Doesn't Grace and Alain learn the blood magic from Desimus? Jowan learns from books. I would argue that Drain Health is blood magic and the Circle seems to have no problem teaching it to mages, as my Amell Warden had it in fade during her Origins.
Demons = easiest and most thorough way to learn Blood Magic IMO.
Unless you are in Tevinter.

Which DLC erases and what comments in particular? Can you elaborate so those who never played without the DLCs understand?
Well, the one we're talking about is overridden by the presence of the Mabari. If you don't have the DLC installed and you've romanced Anders, when you click on Hawke's bed she/he says something along the lines of "Are those...A mage and a grown man, yet Anders can't even pick up his dirty socks"
