Here's where I get to the awkward separation of player and character.  As a player?  I'd do it in a heartbeat.  But I don't know about my Hawke.  Part of what she loves so much about Anders is his passion and his dedication to the mages.  She didn't know Anders in Awakening, and I don't think she would've romanced Awakening Anders.  To her, Justice is a part of Anders.

I'm the opposite.    My Hawke would want to separate them.  For all that she admires his passion, she thinks Justice and Anders are killing each other.  But as the player, I'm like "But I want mah Anders lovin'!"

That's basically my mage Hawke and Anders.  She would've been so much happier if Anders had never convinced her to be less selfish.

I was all "yay a potion to cure you what do we need? crystal poop & pee and drake dust huh?  np I'll dig in the sewer with ya!"  

Then :*(
cuz it wasn't a real potion to seperate them, and I got the feeling he was doing something suspicious with it...he's not good at being sneaky:?  (full trusting friendmance so no interrogation first time)

But, yea......ewww if he drank that

I like to think it as just my extremely subtle and Machiavellian Hawke playing everyone for suckers rather than them all being pants-crappingly dense   Better for my sanity as a player that way.

It ruined the game a little.

I wanted to friendmance Anders with a templar character, just for the dialogue.
Or hear him lecture my blood-mage out of concern for her safety.

I'm not sure whether the option always somes up, but I like to ask the "Is there even a potion?" question when he's trying to get Hawke to distract Elthina. He admits that there isn't, which makes me feel like he knows I know he's up to something and that I'm choosing to help him anyway. It makes some of his end game excuses less annoying. ("Worse, what if you'd wanted to help?! I couldn't allow that! Except for, yeah, that whole thing where I used you to cover the actual planting of the bomb without your knowledge. :whistle:")

Part way through the quest he says something like "I promise than none of this will come back to you, it will be my responsiblity" or whatever. Doesn't really change the fact that Hawke is inadvertantly responsible. Silly Anders.
