Even Anders hate has taken over on facebook. Most comments are more b!tching about how gay he is and how their manly Hawkes couldn't resist pushing the big, glowy gold heart options.
They say it like it's a bad thing.
My boyfriend recruited Anders for the first time yesterday and provoked some flirting by just being diplomatic. The fact that Anders likes you (in that way) doesn't bother him at all but he was annoyed that Anders comes on to you just because you happen to agree with him about mages. And the only way to make Anders NOT flirt with you is to bash mages or something, there should be a "I totally agree with you let's be mates" option instead of just "I hate you HISS" and "Lets get it on" So I kind of see his point, I see why little straight boys would feel intimidated, maybe for the sake of real life diplomacy Anders shouldn't flirt with m!Hawke unless flirted with first. I know it's horrible and it makes me sad, but Anders is so hated already, it pains me that the developers have added another reason for people to dislike him accidentally.
There is a total of 1 option that will lead to Anders flirting with you. If you take the snarky option below it, it's not a diss to mages at all. It's friendly ribbing, precisely the "I totally agree with you let's be mates" option you're talking about. The diplomatic approach, however, is one of the nicest things you can say to someone, and Anders takes it as though maybe you're interested. His response (paraphrased) is, "Beneath that scruffy exterior, there's a heart of gold." And then immediately he backtracks and says, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't presume."
Everyone makes a big deal about Anders' flirting, but it's really very mild. And even if you turn him down or brush it aside, the rivalry hit is tiny and there are plenty of ways to make it back up. There's nothing intimidating about it. It's far less overt than Zevran, for one thing.
Honestly, my feeling is that if people are made uncomfortable by it, then they have issues greater than something confined to a video game.
