Personally, I think he's a creeper. I just picture Karl taking advantage of young Anders while he's in the Circle. He sees a vulnerable boy, who is fearful, angry, and confused and takes him under his wing of sorts, but not without something to gain on his end. I think he probably was a "nice" (for lack of a better term here) pedophile- one who went out of his way to gain Ander's trust.

If you're a Karl purist you might hate me for this...



IDK, from Anders' dialogue it sounded like they were apprentices together. Add to that the crew cut + the Irving beard, and I got the feeling that Karl's character model wasn't that well thought out...

I think it's sort of sad that a slew of perfectly decent literary tropes have been effectively outlawed from ever being used again just because some ****ty, masturbatory teen abstinence porn novel executed them poorly. The problem with how Twilight handled it is that Edward is a neutered vegan prettyboy whose actions do absolutely nothing to suggest he's actually any danger to Bella at all. But even then, that wasn't what made it bad -- what really makes Twilight awful is that it has absolutely no self-awareness whatsoever. The creepy stalker/simpering doormat dynamic between Edward and Bella even could have been interesting if the book acknowledged that in any way, and actually explored their unhealthy codependency with cognizance that it was unhealthy codependency; instead it's extolled as some kind of virtuous True Love without any irony. And that's where the book really gets creepy, because you can tell that the author seriously and wholly does not understand any of the Unfortunate Implications of anything she's written.

Yes, Anders's romance has the same general trope, but it's handled so differently and so much better that I can't help but wonder if the people who make these negative comparisons have any why Twilight was actually bad beyond the idea that they're supposed to hate it and everthing it did because everyone else does. The trope itself had nothing to do with why Twilight's romance was bad -- it was the book's failure to delve beneath the shoddy veneer of romanticism and examine the gruesome train wreck that comprises the heart of their relationship. Anders is written in complete acknowledgement of the train wreck; it doesn't beat you over the head with the idea that you're supposed to think what he does is romantic. The game knows he's codependant, hypocritical and capriciously schizophrenic. Anders actually has legitimate reasons to think he will damage Hawke, and most importantly, he actually does.

God this. 

The romance would'e been just fine. If it was ever acknowledged how unhealthy and ridculous it was.

Alas everyone pretends that it's perfect. <_<

I've never tried to friend her, but her rivalmance worked just fine for me.  Well, she ninja-manced me quite handily.  I haven't actually played through her entire romance.  I flirted with her once just to hear her quip about calling Varric pretty and Varric's response.  XD  Then sure enough she popped up at the Hawke estate for some lovin'.  I think the rival path is easier with her, since I think snark and aggressive options usually give rival points.  Not sure, though.

So. I tend to think of him as having darker hair/skin/etc.

So Anders was kinda like Rainbow Brite, bringin' color back into the world (albeit temporarily)!

Anders can inject colour into my world any day, if you know what I mean.

I imagine Karl being quite a bit older than Anders. I always thought it would have been interesting if Karl had been a creeper and taken advantage of Anders with Anders having been on the very early adult side of things and not realized it. He could have repeated the same thing in the Kirkwall circle. Of course, that's not really in the game and all we know is that templars are unhappy about the letter (but not so much about letters in general since Bethany did say Alrik was creepy).

I'm slow, but on the Karl thing. I got the feeling he was more like a mentor - someone who'd passed his harrowing while Anders was an apprentice, but not vast amounts older.
Plus, y'know, stuff that's already been said about Anders not caring about silly things like age gaps etc.
