Well, thanks to the person I'm in a long
term bromantic relationship with, I've got my Hawke/Anders song. It's
great for Hawkes that feel strong senses of responsibility for the
events going on around them. And might even be a sort of call and answer
thing, too, in it's own way. I don't have to figure it out, it's music,
it can be whatever you want it to be. Little Lion Man.

better love songs than I do. I guess that's what I get for listening to
too much Pitbull. His songs have yet to speak to me.

Wow it's remarkable how you guys hate so many of the things I hate, and love the things I love. I see a pattern here.

Too bad Anders arguments keep me constantly drained of argue-fire or I'd be all over that blog right now.

Housemates
were making random chill playlists yesterday and MOby's Porcelain came
up and when I heard the lyrics I wanted to cry and laugh at the same
time they were so fitting.

In my dreams I'm dying all the time
When I wake its kaleidoscopic mind
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to lie
So this is goodbye
This is goodbye

May i just say, this forum has the best taste in music <3

Tool's Schism seems to fit Ander's thoughts on his relationship on Hawke and his future actions (i.e the WHOLE Chantry)

I've often wondered about how the taint and his possession might interplay, whether he'd still get The Calling or whatever... Riordan says something in Origins to the effect of, "you seek them out, or they seek you out" which seems to imply that as long as he's tainted, at some point the Darkspawn will come for him, even if Justice has managed to wrangle complete control of the body, unless the act of the possession has fundamentally changed his physiology and somehow cancelled out the Taint.

Well, the Calling is basically you turning into a ghoul. So they go to the Deep Roads to die as themselves. I always taken the 'they seek you out' as that, that you either go to die by darkspawn or you become one of them. I don't think Justice can cancel out the Taint, but he might block the going crazy bit. So he will end up possessing a ghoul's body and keeping Anders's consciousness on the brink of sanity (if there is even anything left at that point). :(

Christ, what a ****ed up character Anders is. :( I understand people don't agree with his actions and are irritated by his preachiness, but good god, if they would just think about it... To be hurtled into a basically cursed life as a mage, only have everything stripped away from you because of it... then to be conscripted into an order of people who are for all intents and purposes already dead -- and to consider that freedom...then to be slowly consumed from the inside out by a parasitic force who is so singularly focused on achieving a goal as to try to deny him the earthly pleasures of his old life. Is there any freaking wonder he went nuts? I'd want to blow something up too, cause or no cause.

I know. It's so depressing. I just read on one thread here someone saying how Anders has so many fans because they don't understand his character, and it pissed me off. We like him so much exactly because we understand all this. We like him because he is so tragic and complex and crazy.

I think it might be one of the hints in the game that Anders is actually quite unstable.

I wasn't surprised that Anders has basically snapped.
I mean from the very first time my warden met him, he practically screamed "unstable" to me.

You walk in and he kills a hurlock. All around him are dead bodies (templars (not easy for a mage to take down) + darkspawn).

He doesn't show a great deal of concern about the presence of two armed people, and his first comment is "I didn't do it." (Yeah, convincing. But I don't think he did it... much.)
My reaction: Oh another crazy. Recruit him. NOW.

He reacts to near enough everything with humour, and doesn't show any major signs of anger (in comparison to the other characters. As far as I've seen, anyway. It's been a while), even when mentioning how the Templars had that habit of kicking him in the face to wake him up, and the year of solitary confinement.

He's a little too calm in DA:A, even when he's angry.

Then there's how cheerful he is when discussing the death of Templars...

I don't know, Anders was always somewhat off his rocker, in my opinion.

Yessssssss.

I know when I first met him in Awakening his little speech there made me uncomfortable. I was like "way to be nuts, man".

Yeah, I wonder the same. He may be bat**** crazy but he has some good reasons to be so. But people play for selfish reasons mostly, I think. Not everybody cares (or has an interest to care) about the intricasies of the story and characters, especially in computer games. No matter how far this medium has come as an art form, it's still mass entertainment to a lot of people. Violent and sexual mass entertainment, too! Quelle horreur!

Edir: Topic proceeds so fast... first impressions... yeah, he was def. bat**** crazy back then, too, just not as schizophrenic and a little less bipolar than in DA2.

Oh, and gay. So gay. Whatever came out of his mouth, he was so flamboyantly gay I wasn't sure if I should be offended of the silly caricature or not. But he grew on me...

-snort-
I got over it quickly.
That whole scene with him burning the darkspawn, then shaking his hands.....made me like him instantly, for some reason.
And listening to him perv on Velanna. :D

Oh, I thought it was funny and it also made me like him. But, like, the scene itched. I don't know how to explain it any other way. And I kept going back to it like "why is this itchy?"

And that's how I think deeply of things. They itch, apparently.

Well my boyfriend, on the other hand, thought he was bat**** crazy.
He was watching me play, like, "What's up with this guy?"
I was too busy fangirling over A) Awakening in general and B) Anders to really know what he was talking about. But if I went back and replayed it, I'm sure quite a few things would jump out at me that I bluntly ignored months ago. Haha

It just made me uncomfortable. I think because my brain went, "oh, funny mage!"

And then it went, "waaaaiiiiit".

IDK. He made me a little wary from the start. So whenever someone goes "BUT ANDERS USED TO BE FUNNY WHERE'S FUNNY ANDERS" I think "maybe you weren't paying attention..."

Yeah, this is true. For my part, I always go all-in with Bioware's stuff. It's pretty rare in the gaming industry to find a company who do put so much emphasis on story, above and beyond how it progresses the gameplay, and I really appreciate that.

I just finished a full Origins-to-Awakening run yesterday and it was weird going back. When Origins came out I loved those characters a lot and thought they were great, but in contrast, I don't know. They felt somehow gimmicky or caricaturish next to the motley crew from DA2; maybe it's because most of them are so much gloomier, but they feel more realistic and fleshed out to me. But then I guess everything in Kirkwall is painted with darker shades.

He was funny, yes. But from what I remember of his banter and some of the things he said, he always had a few issues.
He just hid them with (extremely funny) humor. I'm sure he felt just as trapped as he does now....going from the Circle to yet another organized closely watched group, only this one shortened his lifespan considerably and gave him nightmares.

Poor Anders....he's had a pretty ****ty life when you think about it. And just when he escapes (but not really) from the Wardens, he runs into another person hell bent on dragging him along on tons of escapades.

I wondered about that. Yeah Hawke did help him and he did give Hawke his maps, but why volunteer to go to the Deep Roads and stick around?

Why not just leave it at that?

I know my initial impression of him, besides LOVE was that he was a bit...off. He flipped too easily between anger and flippancy, and his reactions in conversation were sometimes hard to read.

My Cousland tried to let him go. She didn't want to conscript him, since she resented Duncan doing it to her, and she knew that he'd only be exchanging one set of chains for another. It's why she didn't hesitate to help him with his phylactery and to kill the **** out of Rylock.

It didn't hurt that she was fascinated by his weirdness, and his amazing healing hands.

Oh, I know, trust me. I come from a family that could write a book about humor as a coping mechanism. And every close friend has only been a close friend because they're in "humor is the best way to not be sad when **** happens" camp.

And I love that fact. In a tragiboner sort of way. I mean, he's been promised a death in the dark, alone and afraid and in pain. Nothing quite reminds me that Anders' life sucks balls like that image does.

and that's the good death. The others involve, say, hot oil and quartering.

I think it's because he did like what he was doing in Awakening. It was probably personally rewarding and sometimes even fun for him to be out and about, getting to use his talents for the greater good. Then there's the social aspect of it. He's so lonely when we meet him in DA2 and so closed off because of his secret. I think that, when he meets Hawke, he sees someone capable of handling him, and maybe even understanding him, and he jumps on that.

My Surana jumped at the chance to destroy his phylactery ... because he  had failed Jowan so hard.

He's a smart guy, usually more politcally savy than that, but pretty much if something somehow triggers his "I sold out Jowan to get here" feeling, he reacts less sensibly. I know he killed Loghain because he couldn't betray Alistair. And he helped Anders out without question because he couldn't ruin such a similar "quest".

My family, too, actually. lol

I think he should've just stuck with the Circle. If I were given the choice between life in the Circle and the Grey Wardens, I think I would choose the Circle. But I guess no one can say that with certainty....since no one's lived it.

He doesn't have many bad things to say about Ferelden's Circle, though....I bet he got to Kirkwall and realized how good he actually had it.

I dunno.

I understand Anders' boner for the idea of freedom. Always, freedom works out to be messier than it is. I think, though, that I'd --

Actually, I don't know. I'm pretty nerdy and probably useless in a fight against darkspawn. But maybe I'd take the Grey Wardens. Better than being trapped. And maybe even a chance to see the world (hopefully,  more above ground than Deep Roadsy), to interact with people, and maybe even do some good.
