Oh, I'm thinking in psychological terms and not just the relationship kind of codependency.
Checklist for Anders!
http://www.coda.org/...atterns-new.htm

Okay, that's not fair.

I don't consider masking pain with humor a bad thing. I mean, how else are you going to live? Sit down and have little "I feel like this" pow wows whenever your feelings get hurt? *grumbles*

All personality disorder and psychology stuff should be read with the conditional "does the trait make one's life more miserable or not", and they're only disorder if the answer is yes.

I'm one of the people who use heavy humour as coping mechanism, too, but I don't feel it in any way hurts me and neither do the people around me, so it's not a problem. But for some, it may be.

I love these checklists for creating characters, btw.

... oh, okay.

Well, then. *awkward cough*

This is sorta like when I got that super higher Autism Quotient on that little test Wired had. Still think it's unfairly weighted for scientists/engineers/people who are simply uncomfortable with people. Or how those levels of morality are distinctly culturally based. Or something.

Pfft. I took one of those tests and got a Forrest Gump moment with a chart.

Dude: You're here *points* everyone else is here. *points* Have you told a doctor?
Me: Yes...I have ADD, but nothing else.
Dude: Oh! That explains it!
Me: ...I will set you on fire with my mind.

LMFAO
I got put on Ritalin in 3rd grade because I supposedly had some kind of mental disorder because I couldn't concentrate properly.
It was most likely due to the fact I hate hated school, for one, And for two, just found my books to be more interesting than Mrs. Height's prattle. Oh yeah....AND I WAS EIGHT.

I also found it interesting to insist that Rebecca Potter in my class was related to Harry Potter...she was not amused.

Everyone has some amount of ADD. If someone doesn't interest you you'll be easily distratcted.

Like the Templars in DA2. So distracted by other mages they don't notice Hawke has a staff.

Can't forget the robes, either!

Cullen: Mages aren't like you and me!
Hawke: *looks down at robes; looks at staff* Riiiiigghhhhtt. EVERYONE RUN TO THE EXIT BEFORE HE CATCHES ON.
Carver: *already gone*

IDK. He made me a little wary from the start. So whenever someone goes "BUT ANDERS USED TO BE FUNNY WHERE'S FUNNY ANDERS" I think "maybe you weren't paying attention..."

THIS.  I hate how people go on about how he's an entirely different character in DA2 from Awakening.  He's really not.  He hid behind humor in Awakening, but it was glaringly obvious that he had some issues.

Apparently, us Anders fans don't really know Anders or something... I don't get it.

"He wuz funny. They took his cat and now hez terroist!!!!11111"

Man, that's deep... or derp.

...

uh. I need to go back and play Act 1. Wasn't there a non-magical-explosion formula sorta... drifting around at that time?

Anders, if you've been thinking about this for six years instead of thinking of boning my Hawke, I'm going to be very upset with you.

Good point. Why did he make me fish around in the sewers for crystallized wee?
Rhetorical question - because he's nuts. :o

Right?
I was all like, "PFFT can't be any worse than after Alistair breaks up with me during the Landsmeet. Talk about a broken heart!"

Can someone give me a logical Role Play reason why should my Hawke who Romances Anders should go Blood Mage? For practical reasons, I can't see her going Spirit Healer with Anders around.

All the other mages use that reason.

Because you're so oppressed, obviously. They basically force you into it what with all that...oppressive...ignorance of your abilities... and... um...hrm... :?

Edit: Maybe your dad was just an irresponsible jackass who played Wicked Grace with demons on Sundays. "Blood magic? more like Fun Magic amirite, kids?! :wizard:"

I honestly think they looked at how much people cried over Allistair and went, "We can do better."

My Hawke's a blood mage because, you know, he bleeds a lot. And he gets into a lot of desperate, "oh, ****" moments (see: dueling the Arishok as a mage).

Blood magic isn't inherently evil. You just need a Hawke that's genre savvy and possibly chaotic (good, neutral or evil are all okay, I imagine).

AWW YEA WAKIN UP, RESPONDING TO **** FROM 5 PAGES AGO

Yenaquai wrote...

Even though I also dislike the comparison between Twilight and the Anders-romance, I do see a similarity in the "tell and don't show"-mechanism.

There is some truth that like in Twilight, declarations like "You are my life now" seem hollow if the romance just hasn't been established or was so superficial and forced and.... well what Stephanie Meyer sees as romance/love.

And it's a little bit like the Anders romance.
When the whole romance scene fired up I was a bit ... surprised, to be honest. In Act 1 we have one/two conversations that could lead to potential flirting or proof that they are interested in each other. Sure, you somehow get to know Anders if you take him with you very often, but ... it's not exactly the same.
And then in Act 3 there are all those lines about "aching for you for three years" and "I want you right here, until the day we die" and "I couldn't stand to loose you to the templars" and "It would kill me to loose you".
It just seemed to be out of blue, for me, personally. In ME (or especially ME2) this might work, as it seems that the relationship you start is very fresh, and for example with Thane you get the feeling that at the end they agree that they feel something more than friendship for each other, and want to try to start a relationship. - But not more.

But I guess the timeskip of said three years negates any tension or feelings or "building up" of a relationship between Anders and Hawke. And we are left with what we are told, and we just should believe that it was so.

The difference between what Twilight did and what DA2 did was Twilight showed you all of its romance and still failed to make Edward and Bella's premature declarations of love believable -- and all through the book it enforces the idea that you're supposed to think they have a perfect and enviable true love. There are no gaps to fill in, we are present for all of their interactions, and it falls flat because what we see doesn't support the narrative the author is forcing on the reader. It deliberately discourages alternative interpretations.

DA2 neither shows all of Hawke's interactions with Anders, nor does it enforce a strict interpretation of what the romance is supposed to be. Anders says what he feels, informing the viewer that there is a year gap where he and Hawke had more interactions than is shown in the game (YMMV as to the ease or satisfaction of mentally filling this gap yourself), and leaves it up to the player to decide whether or not they are in true wub or an extremely unhealthy codependent relationship agitated by the fact Anders is mentally unstable and prone to obsessive behavior. Stuff like the "I'm hungry" line allows the player to acknowledge and deflect the fact Anders is being a horrible sap. The only place I really think it failed was the "I WANT YOU HERE UNTIL THE DAY WE DIE" line. Aside from that, it never actually tells you what you should feel about it -- it shows you what Anders says, but it doesn't tell you what the thoughts and emotions behind his words are (as it did in Twilight, where you had a constant front-row seat to Bella's internal dialogue where she is constantly informing the reader that she really is in DEEP TRUE LOVE WITH EDWARD FOREVER AND ALWAYS, the stripping of which being responsible for the reason why the movies are 600x more tolerable than the books).

Meanwhile, two weeks into the timeline of Twilight, Bella has already decided that Edward is her soul mate (a conclusion I'm pretty sure she arrives on the second or third time she ever sees him) and is begging him to turn her into a vampire. And the reader is never given any indication why. Edward's infatuation is a little more clear (he wants to eat her), but then the fact he is a one hundred year old ****ing virgin and she is the only woman he has ever loved makes it just as confusing as Bella's -- what is it about Bella that makes her so desirable that he suddenly wants to end his apparently century-long celibacy?

Meyer gives the reader a couple of weeks worth of interactions, and when the reader asks "this is it?", she responds with three more books of "Yup, isn't it wonderful?!"; DA2 gives the player a couple of conversations, and when the player asks "this is it?", DA2 says "no".

Again, YMMV as to whether or not this is satisfying, but I wouldn't say it falls into any of the trappings of Twilight. The game isn't at all telling you it's an idealized picture of true love despite the fact their interactions suggest otherwise; it shows you some things, doesn't show you other things, and ultimately leaves it up to you to make the conclusions.

I wanted to shank Alistair and his noble reasoning to the Void.

Have you noticed that any relationship in Bioware is...unhealthy? In Mass Effect: if you romance Garrus - don't *cough* injest. If you romance Thane - don't lick; oh, and he's going to die, so you're just setting yourself up for heartbreak. If you romance Tali - she may die of infection. Kaidan and Ashley - they don't trust you. Liara - well, she's relatively normal aside from the mental sex...all the fun without the clean-up. In Dragon Age: if you romance Alistair - max out your persuasion else he'll dump you. Leliana - her old lover returns with intent to kill. If you romance Zevran - you may end up with a knife in your back. If you romance Morrigan (and you're male) - she'll run off with your child and disappear into a mirror. Then, if you romance Fenris - he leaves you because he doesn't have a pair; and God forbid if you're a mage! If you romance Isabela - you'll get an STD and she'll run off. If you romance Merrill - uh, hello? BLOOD MAGE! Stupid Blood Mage, at that. If you romance Anders - ...need this be pointed out for the millionth time?

I think we're masochists.

And Bioware knows it.

Pervs.

Desperation?  That's how I RP it, I suppose.  I'm not a fan of the Blood Magic spec in DA2, I haven't been able to get the hang of it, but I always pick it over Spirit Healer because I like RPing that my mages suck at healing.  Hawke demands a lot of herself and is constantly getting into trying situations that nearly kill her and her friends.  You can just RP that one time she was out of mana and the battle was going poorly, so in desperation she turned to blood magic.

Dragon Age III.

Both Old Gods wake up.

AT THE SAME TIME. B)

(no not really. please. something more clever.)

A Blight, two old gods (Flemeth and Morrigan's child-I still think they will somehow make it canon), and the most terrifying thing...Sandal's awakening! He knows something, he is someone greatly important, I'm sure!

I love how most people can seem to assume DAIII will take place in Orlais or at least have some significant moment happen there just because Sandal is apparently going there.

If DA III is in Orlais, then I'd bet theres a DA IV.
I'd place my bets on everything ending in Tevinter... unless the real focus of the Dragon Age stories have nothing to do with Tevinter or the Blight... Is there anything worse out there than the blight!?:?

What I want to know is: What the hell was in that book the Warden took from Morrigan's stuff after she left? (and what happened to Finn, Dog and whatserface afterwards?)

Also, what the heck is wrong with Sandal? Seriously, in Origins it was funny to find him surrounded by darkspawn corpses, in DA2, he was getting to be disturbing...

And FYI Bioware. After the utter chaos in DA2, and the vanishing Warden in DA, I expect DA3 to be epic.

I have a feeling DA3 will be super epic. I am sensing plot twists and more "GODDAMNIT" moments.

I am hoping they bring Loghain back...(but PLEASE don't change his model too much!) I'm sure this crap with Orlais has him going crazy.

*...the Maker returning?
