Anders turns into a giant raging demon dragon abomination and kills ****loads of people, then Sebastian returns and shoots him out of the sky with his Arrows of the Maker.
Then Fenris becomes super-happy-rainbow Fenris. Which would be the worst thing of all. -grimface-

That made me lol more than it should have.

I honestly think it's because the folks at Bioware got their idea of romance from Shojo manga. The way these guys write relationships you're think they've never been in love/dated.

Think of how boring a stable relationship is. Does anyone really want to play Shiba5 and her husband Almost-Anders go to Home Depot and buy a lawn mower? Which one should they buy? the one that cuts 3 1/2" or 4"? Oh geez... um... decisions decisions. Stay tuned because later they go get sushi for lunch.

/snore

But being the Deanna Troi in every one isn't much fun either. I'm not a babysitter.

If you mean guiding all of your companions decisions, computers aren't quite smart enough yet where Anders can say he no longer wants to follow Gaider's scripted plan for himself. A sentient Anders would be interesting...
Maybe he would decide not to break any hearts.

I'm not talking about breaking hearts. The companions are as competent as the developers allow them to be which in this game wasn't a lot. That's the beauty of it, they don't have to be whimpering man children if they don't write them as such. I mean, Varric seemed generally self sufficient but alas, you can't run your fingers through his chest hair.

Varric is a bro. He's too stable to romance. You'd end up going to Home Depot or whatever the Thaedas equivalent is. I've always bought Bioware games because I know they're going to manipulate the **** out of me. I expect it. They outdid themselves this time.

I'm not saying they're all virgin waifus, just write like ones.

Most of the female hetero relationships make you have to pull layers back before you get in a guys pants. For once the timid, damaged love interest should be more aggressive. I'm a hero, not Dr. Phil.

yeah not seeing it

"We'll be together until the day we die!"

Really? And you're not seeing it. If Hawke lay it on any thicker Anders would suffocate.

but like half the point is that the overwrought love confessions are purposefully ironic to underscore the fact their relationship is ****ty and dysfunctional and harfjsdufdfwqwhafrgl

It wasn't that Varric was too stable, it's because nothing would get done. Hawke would never leave his room at the Hanged Man. Varric seems like he'd have great post-sex snuggling stories.

Same here - my Hawke  too snarky  for that line to be delivered entirely sincerely (I cringe inside at that line everytime Image IPB). In my playthroughs, Hawke says it to be facetiously over the top thinking Anders will read it as such but still see there's affection in that but then when she sees that he's apparently taken it seriously just runs with it and has a quiet chuckle about it with her faithful Mabari later

It's not ironic. It's bollocks and I'm not the only one who thought as much. Maybe we're just too surface for the relationships in this game.

just because a lot of people think something doesn't mean it's actually right !!!

the only thing I really took issue with is that the UNTIL THE DAY WE DIE was the only line Hawke could choose, but the ridiculous sap coming from Anders was very self-aware and you could sort of call him on his **** with the evasive "want a sandwich" lines. The game presented you with the cliche Utter Love Devotion and then spent the rest of the acts deconstructing the kind of unhealthy, unstable person you'd need to be to actually be as obsessive as Anders/every generic romance novel protagonist.
