Well when you think about it....while the romances may be a huge deal to some, this game kind of forced you to focus more on the plot. Rather than just stopping and chatting with Alistair about your feelings....next to a pile of smoldering darkspawn carcasses.
This game wasn't ALL ABOUT THE ROMANCE. It was sort of like the ME trilogy's layout. Give you specific times to talk to companions instead of focusing solely on the romance.

I like it, personally. Makes it more authentic.

I thought the romances in DA2 were handled better than in either DA:O or ME to be honest.

They were neither as unrealistic as DA:O (ie sleeping with Morrigan/Zevran/Leliana 5 minutes after you meet them), or as shallow as the ME ones (a couple of talks, 1 night together and that's it)

Funnily enough, if you decide you're going to hate something and then refuse to look at it at any angle other than "I want to hate this", you'll hate it.

Considering Hepler was responsible for the dorfs, I'd find it kind of hard to believe she wasn't aware of the nuance.

I have faith in the game writers, but there are also a lot of people who do like the breathy, over the top romance stuff.  There's nothing wrong with giving them what they want.  I would rather see that there's more there than that, though, and I'd never heard that take on the romance before (i.e. the intentional irony bit).

That's not unreasonable, though. I think that sort of thing would be waiting next for the chopping block for any project like this. Important though it would be to Fenris' character and it would be a huge addition to the scene, it's something you would see for 30 seconds, during an optional 'sidequest,' of which there are three others like it to choose from. Sure you can credit that to lack of time but in every creative project ever, things get cut.

I think so, too.
As far as the "moving in right after first time together" thing...that really didn't bother me. I figure...they're living in a chaotic setting with the chance of dying every day. Let them move a little fast. lol

That was the one thing I dislike about DAO, how fast you could progess the relationship without the plot being relevant at all.  You had to puposely pace yourself so the romance wasn't rushed.

I think the problem with the arguably premature DA2 release is that, had it not been released when it was, it would end up clashing with either SWTOR in mid 2011 or with ME3 in late 2011, or it would have had to be pushed back to 2012, which would just have been a waste of time/money.

See I would have bought this if it weren't for Mass Effect. Jacob strips, Miranda strips and they're just two optional love interests. They still had to take the time to render that 30 seconds of scene. It's clear DA2 didn't have the budget or the time.

It's true. They wanted a winter release and sadly DA2 was the volunteer.

Can't render a shirtless Fenris, have time to record lines for a romance that goes nowhere.

Well Jennifer Hepler did say Seb's story wasn't over, so who knows. It might still go somewhere.

Though given how unpopular he seems to be, I have my doubts.

Well if there had been a longer development time/bigger budget it probably would have been possible to have more romance scenes for each companion and thus things wouldn't move at such a fast pace. The "first night together" and "moving in" events wouldn't have to be a 2-in-1.

Having more or less scenes wasn't really responsible for the tones of the romance. Even with just the one scene, it could have been played much more casually if that were the intent -- Anders had very practical reasons for wanting to live somewhere other than the sewers but he was very deliberately characterized as a U-Haul lesbian.

That's half the point of deconstructions, isn't it? You draw people in with a familiar cliche and start pointing out the cracks. Anders is so over the top unstable that it's sort of hard to believe that she was honestly trying to play the trope 100% straight.

Templar #1: Hey that guy over there is glowing.
Templar #2: Hm?
T1: He seems to be glowing. He looks really angry...
T2: (looks up) Oh he just has a cold. (looks back at book)
T1: But...he's got a staff. And he's waving it at us.
T2: (looks up again) So every glowing guy with a staff wants to harm us, then?
T1: I guess not....
T2: (looks back at book) Good. I'm glad we established that.

AND THIS is what the templars must do EVERY FREAKING DAY instead of their JOB.

I didn't hate him as a character but he's just not terribly interesting. I honeslty don't see myself buying anymore DLC with him and am content picturing him stroking his beard(he grew one) in Starkhaven repeating "Soon."

Then so what? They didn't have the budget or the time. Someone sets the deadline and tells you how much money you can use and you make a game. Because we have examples of things that were cut or were almost cut on the DA2 side and not (as far as I know) on the ME2 side doesn't mean they didn't have to make cuts too. It's a matter or relative importance and priorities. It doesn't really work that since X has Z then Y should have Z too.

I wondered about that. Yeah Hawke did help him and he did give Hawke his maps, but why volunteer to go to the Deep Roads and stick around?

Why not just leave it at that?

I think it's because he did like what he was doing in Awakening. It was probably personally rewarding and sometimes even fun for him to be out and about, getting to use his talents for the greater good. Then there's the social aspect of it. He's so lonely when we meet him in DA2 and so closed off because of his secret. I think that, when he meets Hawke, he sees someone capable of handling him, and maybe even understanding him, and he jumps on that.

I know it's been a few hours, but I think it's definitely a combination of his loneliness and the fac that he is forced to tell Hawke (and co.) about Justice and they say, "Ho hum, let's go kill some mercenaries."  He'd been hiding it for so long and here these people just accept it and let him tag along.  I was totally unsurprised that he jumped at the chance.  After everything has gone wrong he's got another opportunity to be with people again (and it was Hawke at first sight, of course).

Nooo... in the moment I only have a neglected blog for serious art and a livejournal for fanart I never update. (and my lj will probably be deleted very soon, because I just got no time for it)

Buuuut I might get a tumblr soon. Hopefully... one of these days. ^^°

I'm sure they did but it's about making it appear like you did nothing at all. The same cave over and over again was undoubtedbly another victim of time contraints but they didn't dress it up enough for us to not notice.
