DnD mages are very dependant on the GM, IMO. If your GM is scared of them, all the monsters you fight have resistances and high saves. Then you may have a warrior that is all "craft me things or I'll bash your brains." So yeah, I knit or do something else when playing a DnD mage.DeaHamlet wrote...
One of my coworkers upon hearing that my first playthrough was mage exclaimed "But you should NEVER play mage the first time through!!!" He was refering to usual D&D mages which are hard to play, but I think he was right in a different way.
Rogue and warrior feel ... very unsatisfying after being a mage.
But must get through it... must romance that Merrill.

I never really do the same romance more than once. Why repeat when you can try something new?
I can only speak for myself... the Hawke doesn't have to be the same. That makes things different enough right there.

Eeeeeeeehxcellent. I'll go with that, then.

After the first time, I also never took Fenris and Aveline... they seem the most negatively affected o.O
Yeah, Fenris tends to KO my party in one sweep with his Cloud sword.

Namely, I'm rolling a warrior- should I go with two-handed, or shield and sword?
It's perhaps worth mentioning that Warrior!Hawke's pretty much "samurai with a Ferelden paint job" at this point. I'm emphasizing the Meat Shield aspect more than Unstoppable Death Machine, since she's assigned herself as Anders' protector. (Hell, with Bethany gone, someone has to fill the void.)
I have never seen the need for a shield & sword warrior in DA:O or DA2. But then again, I don't play nightmare.

In DAO I just liked how sword and borad worked. In DA 2 I was all over two handed fighting, so much better then in DAO.

LOL Anders + mage Hawke totally froze everyone and destroyed everything. I'm not terrified of him beating me, I just thought he was the most unhappy about the whole thing [mind you, he was on the rivalry path]. And Aveline, no matter what, seems to hate mages more afterwards. Since I often play mages or mage sympathizers, I don't need that mess.
Love that Anders never gets tempted *swoon*.

I found two handed satisfied the fun quotient a lot more than the sword&board did, even though I really dig the romantic connotations of being a shield bearing "champion" type. A lot of the time I felt like the S&B was an exercise in frustration because the threat mechanics are on such short ranges, everythign costs so much stamina, and one of the main tanking sustained abilities disabled your ability to close on targets. Two-handed with Scythe and Taunt almost felt more defensive in the rush-to-someone's-side kind of way, if not in the "I'm made of pure metal, try it!" sense.

Last time I took Fenris, Varric survived and handled it. He was all "don't worry Hawke, I've got your back." It was actually quite fun. I haven't tried taking Seb yet.MelfinaofOutlawStar wrote...

I only played mage or rogue in DA:O. I never felt the need to take much control of Alistair/Oghren/Sten in fights. They just did their stuff. So I never felt tempted to try a warrior character. Playing one in this for the romantic factor of being all protective to my sweet mage girlfriend (Merrill).Amondra wrote...

I found the same thing: I loved being an archer, a dual-wield rogue, and a mage but sword-and-board was frustrating, particularly when Fenris would leap in and wipe out the three guys I'd been whittling away in one swipe. I'm going for a two-handed warrior next and Fen and I will leap in and slaughter everyone wholesale. And then I can rival-mance Anders for once.Kolotosa wrote...

No, he won't come with you and that ticked me off big time. He just says "The Fade is no place for a man of faith" in that infuriating serene voice of his. You know, Seb? Hawke could be too! But she still sucks it up. If every companion just buggered off when they didn't approve of the quest, well, the PC would be alone quite often, lol.

Yeah, thanks Seb.
Ick. I think he maxxed out hate-points with me though. This attitude does not surprise me.

I think that was just an excuse for BW not having to do a scene with Seb betraying you + an extra scene at the end, like with the other characters.

I love how that implies that he thinks mages (since they do spend time in the fade) cannot have faith; that somehow they are genetically difficient in that area.leggywillow wrote...
