Wow that guy a few pages back... just wow.

Anyway just my few thoughts on mages.
David Gaider has stated categorically they are not slaves which is fair enough but....

(snip)

He may say that, but you better be a good magey or they'll make you a tranquil and force you to hawk trinkets on the street corner. Maybe you can be Meredith's secretary - not that you get a choice. Semantics.

For those folks doing the Fenris-sexytimes-run-to-anders-for-comfort..

TOTALLY WORTH the having to go back and replay elements of the game till I got JUST the right amount of ralvarly to have angry sexy with fen and then go "OH ANDERS HE BROKED MY HEART, SAVE ME Q_Q".

totally worth it. Angry broken fenris qqing about anders jumping into his spot before it got cold = pure epic win.

Don't give in! Get fenris's question beliefs before you trigger his 'a bitter pill' quest and he'll give you glowy kiss of doom (although I had to send isabela away cause fenris wouldnt let me sleep with her :( Hiss!)

About Nate's bug... someone made a fix, it's a file that they've posted in mods.
Basically I think it has to do with the fact that DA2 checks friendship level or somesuch and imports from the DLC don't have that info?! I dunno, but the mod file totally fixed it and I finally saw Nate with MY import file rather than a generated one.

LOL in answer to a few posts back about romancing both Fenris and Anders several posts appeared as I was typing it.

I only went for both the once.... for science.... and for that dialog ;)

It's a church.  *Public* place of worship.  I doubt Anders picked "Chantry closed for floor polishing" day to blow it up.  As others have said before, there was the guy praying about visiting prostitutes, and the woman praying for her son or brother.  There were Chantry sisters there.  We don't know if the templars (and sisters, not shown) who were killed were pro-Meredith or pro-Thrask, do we?  BioWare could have beaten us over the head with the death of innocents more, yes, but to me, the game made it clear that Anders blew up at least a few innocent people.

That was me. Mostly I was being funny. I know we were supposed to get that he blew up innocent people, but I thought it was humorous that they didn't even put one non-Chantry person in the cutscene to drive that home. It was mainly a bunch of Templars having a WTF moment.

Sorry, I'm dragging this weighty stuff up from last night. Here's a smilin' Anders to derail us back onto the happy track.

I'm happy I bought a pc version too this time. I still regret having my main playthorughs of Origins on Xbox. Hope the cameos and flag imports for LI will be fixed in the next patch...or in any patch for non-pc users.

@Heidenreich: DO WANT! Ok that is awesome incentive, I will not be distracted!

@sassperella: That was my initial reluctance to try it, in pretty much any playthough I stick to one person as I like to play the dedicated-to-only-one character, but for this time round I'm RPing that Hawke is attracted to Fenris but they clash so it's just a physical thing. Hawke meanwhile has seen Anders as a really good friend who she flirts with just because she's a flirty minx, it's what she does, and throughout her time in Kirkwall so far she has found herself really starting to care about him. When Anders nearly killed the mage girl in Justice/Vengeance mode, that was really a point of realisation for her that she wants to be there for him and help him through his situation, which in turn will progress into love. So, basically, I'm RPing it as her feelings for Anders slowly creeping up on her (much like Anders himself I guess, lol)

@shiba5: *swoons over Anders pic* he just looks so adorable there!

I had rivalry hatesex with Fenris once, and I so wish my purple-all-the-way Hawke had a better option for when Anders asks about it.

I can currently...
- Tell Anders to leave (heartbreaker, "Don't call him that! I'm sorry, Anders, we can't do this.")
- Gloss over the issue in a disgustingly sweet way (golden heart, "He meant nothing to me. You're the one I love.")
- Say there was nothing between Hawke and Fenris (lie, "It never happened.")
- Act all heartbroken (choice icon, "Fenris is gone. There's nothing more between us.")

I'd much rather the golden heart choice was a bit more reflective of my personality choice, just how we've been complaining about the horrible "I want you right here. Until the day we die." thing at the end. Something ridiculously inappropriate would be much better, like: "You've seen that sword he lugs around. Turns out he really was compensating," or "That's elves for you. A single night of passion before you wake up and find they've stolen all the silverware," or "He couldn't stay. Something about having to catch up on his brooding."

I'm OK with sleeping with a rivaled Fenris and then going onto Anders because it does feel like a colossal mistake and that's a rare vibe for a video game. I like Fenris as a character, and my Hawke likes him when they can drink, joke and be all "grrrr, slavers" and had Anders not existed/given in, she might have ended up with Fenris in the end. However, when they do sleep together he's a beacon of negativity and she's not yet found a new purpose after losing her sisters to the Warden. It's not a good time for either of them to get involved with anyone who isn't Isabela, and they both realize it and move on.

(This is where the Fenris/Isabela hook-up glitch works to my favor as I can pretend that they move on with each other, which is hot fine by me).

While it might be more romantic to imagine Hawke pining for Anders the way he aches for him/her and eschewing all others, it doesn't feel realistic to me after he draws lines around himself. My Hawke understands why he wouldn't want to get involved with anyone, even if it is frustrating, and she's not going to put her life on hold on the off chance that he comes around (which is the main reason why it's going to be so hard to really romance Fenris), especially since she's not really doing much in the years between the expedition and the qunari stuff.

This! I am so disappointed in the options (although the Golden Heart one is kinda awesome if you also slept with Isabela, because he asks about Fenris and Hawke says "She meant nothing to me. You're the one I love", which can be twisted to fit a jokey Hawke.  The line about his sword would work, too.

Yes, exactly this! Anders says repeatedly in Act I that it's better that they don't get involved, so I don't think it's unreasonable that Hawke might shrug and move on, even if s/he's still attracted to Blondie. Fenris refusing to move on for three years isn't really a healthy example, and it's extra frustrating that you can't even have a fling with Isabela without destroying any chance of a relationship with him later.

It's one of the things I might've liked to see for the time skips: one or two optional NPCs you could flirt with through Act I, who are then revealed in Act II as past lovers, similar to how you meet Elegant, Worthy and Tomwise offscreen between the prologue and first Act. Just something so it doesn't have to feel like Hawke's life has been completely devoid of physical companionship.

I 've done the Fenris is my only man thing.. and the "Continually hit on anders till he gives in and loves me" thing. the, "I sleep with anyone who shows me their affection because I'm a broken, broken woman" thing is just more fun. Sadly my current game is buggy and Fenris wouldn't even consider sleeping with me when I took Issy up on her offer of 'girly time'. Le-sigh.  I did TOTALLY give Carver nightmares for sleeping with Jethan though! Utterly worth it.

The fanfiction, these DragonAge boys put it in my head and it flows from my fingertips,  basking in all its horribly written glory.<3

I see the Chantry debate has cropped up again recently and I have two comments to make:

1. The Chantry's in Hightown. I have serious doubts about it as a fully accessible public place of worship for this reason. I don't imagine the nobles look kindly on people from Darktown/Lowtown/anywhere but Hightown, really, showing up to pray or ask or help or attend whatever the Thedas equivalent of Mass is. It's like having a chapel on the upper deck of the Titanic. Who REALLY gets to pray there?

2. As others have said, Anders in his clinic did a hell of a lot more good for the refugees and the poor than Elthina ever did. Meredith's babble about the "people of Kirkwall" rising up in rage against the mages would probably ring pretty hollow to a lot of them if they heard it. I would actually be very interested to see if what Anders provoked wasn't actually a class war. He must have built up considerable goodwill over the years, and people like Arianni seem relatively common (frightened parents who are more worried about templars taking their kids away than their kids turning into demons). Reminds me a bit of the European witch trials, really. The healer down the street might be using forbidden incantations, but if she healed you or your kids, you're not going to be telling tales when the inquisitors come knocking.

Disclaimer: I probably will lose track of this thread again, so if I fail to reply to any replies it's unintentional. Y'all post so fast. :X

I think "just a game" (or "just a tv show/movie/book") is useful for gaining perspective when an argument becomes too personal or vitriolic. I love to argue about Dragon Age, probably more than most people, but I also have to keep in mind that there are no real world implications for the things that happen in the game, nor will another person's opinions/enjoyment of certain aspects ruin my own (admittedly, I sometimes ignore these things). Also, once you get into the realm of Ranty McMeanypants, discussion loses all nuance and devolves into something that isn't much fun at all and hardly enlightening.

I haven't been able to read the whole discussion, but I read Ranty's post, and it had some good points. To respond it like that is just childish. I don't see much difference in that or that Isabela one. As far as I know the debate when pretty much like this: 1) "she's a w****", 2) "that's insulting", 3) "chill, she's pixels".

I agree that ranting isn't going anywhere, but that's when you guide the discussion to a constructive direction. This is when you see, if the opposite party is ready for an actual discussion.

Objectivity is preferable, but understating the content isn't. I get your point however. Thanks, Surely.

Yes, this. Maybe my "ha-ha some pixels exploded." wasn't the best reply, but in reality that's all that happened. I find that trying to discuss things with people who are over-the-top ranting is an exercise in futility. I'm not going to change their mind. He actually made some decent points, but his posting style made me want to drop a "U Mad?" and forget it.
