To be honest, I wouldn't touch most of the party members with a 10-foot pole.

What about touching Isabela with a significantly shorter one?  No?  I'll see myself out.

How much shorter?

I am having way too much fun with the sloganmaker.

"Why be irritated? It's Anders."

You know how much gunpowder naval guns need? Especially of the ship sinking kind? The crew would be spending far more time collecting the ingredients than actually pirating.

Let's see, Fawkes had 36 barrels, yes? Enough to blow up the House of Lords, which was, I believe, the size of  a large mansion. The Chantry was much larger from what we saw in the cutscene, closer to the size of the entire Palace.
Anders either performed some magical multiplication to the ingredients we found for him, or added something to increase the size of the resulting explosion. No reason he couldn't do the same later on, right?

There was magic involved, so I'm guessing the gunpowder was just for ignition - a way to trigger the reaction without his presence - he may have not needed that much.

That being said simply being a mage with the ability to roast people with magic fireballs is way more useful than naval artillery, which require fairly large trained crews as well as storing the gunpowder, for the purpose of pirating.

But Anders doesn't know the fireball spell.

I drew this BEFORE I knew Adam Howden was going to be the voice actor.

Could it be... DENSITY?

Or maybe gunpowder wasn't involved at all and they just used familiar ingredients to give a hint to the players. If you take his staff tapping as setting the bomb off then I'd imagine the whole thing was magic.

He gets so much hate everywhere else, I think people are a bit more defensive in here.

I've noticed  :?

The main thing for me is that people come into this thread and seem to assume that we all love and adore Anders while being completely blind to his faults and flaws. I don't mind a debate, but one without the patronising, condescending tone would be nice.
I don't think anyone here would argue that he's a total innocent who never meant to harm anyone. We could argue that and look like fools, or we can accept his actions and analyse what prompted them, gaining more perspective on events and adding depth to an already interesting character.

I know I like Anders partly because he's a big ball of crazy who manages to screw up. For one thing, he makes my Hawke look like a perfectly reasonable, responsible citizen in comparison.

Okay, going back a page, but I wanted to comment (it takes me sooo long to catch up on everything I miss over night). I think this is what bugged me about the ranty post. I agreed to varying degrees with some of the points the poster brought up but then it all came off as extremely patronising.

Honestly, the thing I love about this thread is that people freely express so many different opinions about Anders and his actions. There are bunches of people who support the Chantry bombing, bunches that were against it, and all the shades between that. People who knifed Anders and people who spared him (and different reasons for both of those). I could go on and on. I love seeing the debates over these things and more. I just don't like it when people pop into the thread, paint us all with the same brush, and then pop out.

I like giving everyone fireballs. It's really funny. Try it for science.

Useful for him, maybe, but where's the fun for Izzy and Hawke in watching Anders do all the destruction?
It's something of a pity that the Qunari are so dedicated; there probably isn't a single tiny spark of hope of being able to take over one of their ships and coercing the crew into working for the interlopers.

I think it'd be fun for Hawke and Izzy to watch Anders go "SUCK ON A FIREBALL" as he's hurling ice spells.

I don't really see a lot of difference between some of the mage spells and the archery/rogue abilities to be honest.

Also, the poop bomb thing that people like to giggle about? Come on, guys, think past the "lol urine and manure" bit for a moment.

Anders knows how to make gunpowder.

Gunpowder.

You can take him with you on Isabela's ship at the end of the game. Guys. Do you know what this means?

****ing CANNON.

Yeah, yeah, the Qunari probably already have them, but who doesn't want to see Izzy in charge of a ship loaded with gunpowder and cannon with a crazy apostate mage on board, sailing off to kidnap the Queen of Antiva?

**** yes.

You are totally correct.  And everyone who keeps whining about how he'd be useless in the future war... HE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE GUNPOWDER!

"Do you think he realises...?"
"Not sure. You?"
"Well, they're kind of red once they've hit a few people."
"Do you think we should tell him?"
"Eh, he's having fun."
"More butter?"
"Ooh, yes, please."

Gunpowder was assisted by magic, yes.  But it's still gunpowder.

People are saying he'll be useless? Man, the firs thing I thought after "Dammit Anders!" was, "Man, he could end a Blight so fast if another one starts." Seriously, if he can make explosions that big, I figure he'll be usefull as all hell in any big fight. Who's afraid of an Archdemon when you can bomb it to the Void and back.

Wanted to comment on this too. I don't venture into too many of the other threads anymore regarding Anders simply because of the level of hate, "Anders smells of poo" "Anders needs to die" "I shanked a mage and I liked it", and this isn't because I'm so pro-Anders that I can't read negative comments about the character. I feel this thread is a great place where not so... vitriolic discussion can take place. It's not just for declaring love for the character but for discussing the negatives too in a calm, insightful (and hilarious a la knicker-stealing and shrine-building) manner. I think having someone post comments here that are quite heated breaks from that - it's obviously totally fine to hate a character, and to be fair that's understandable in Anders's case as he is a controversial one, but to post here in such a way is going to provoke a reaction and seemed to me to be one of the main intents of the post.

Ok sorry to anyone who's fed up with this topic, just felt the need to post something on it.

He had excellent points, but his tone suggested that he wasn't going to discuss things. It felt very much like a "Ya'll are so wrong in specific and sundry ways. Have fun justifying murder, because you're wrong" drop post and the fact that he didn't come back to respond to those that did address his valid points proves that he just wanted to **** on the thread, not really get into a conversation.

Or he was scared :P

It's of course a bit different to say "you support a murderer" than "your Hawke supports someone who killed people, on my opinion, without a justification". The issue still remains real. Is there justification in that situation, real or not real? People see the situation differently and that along is worth discussing about. Unfortunately however this is a tender subject to many. This of course is a sign that the emotions are real, even if the actions are not.

Killing people doesn't hopefully concern most of us in daily basis so getting into the shoes of someone who deals with these things is fascinating. DA2 presents several different situations with basically the same action (killing someone) but from a very different aspect. Ethina is one of the trickier ones, which is why it divides people. I love that it does, it means the game has succeeded in something.

I think there should be an image of anders sitting on his crate with the decimated chantry behind him, eating a twix. ^_~

"Need a moment? Chew it over with twix."

Also, my new mage Hawke poked Anders with his cawke last night.

It felt so right.
