In his final quest, when he asks you to gather supplies, he is honest if you challenge him--he admits that he is up to something dangerous, that he doesn't want to see you get hurt or be involved, and there is no way of stopping him. He is very protective on the surface, but with that dangerous undercurrent always present.
Still, you never really know until that last defining moment. The fact that, in the end, he doesn't blame his actions on Justice, that he takes responsibility for his actions, that even if you say he must die, he says he is glad to have had some happiness with you, makes me think that even if you never met Anders, he would have ended up doing something like this.
That consistency makes me thing that his feelings for Hawk are genuine.
His cause is the most important thing to him and he never once denies
this.
Oh... a round about way of saying, he got to me too.
