RE: Story Disconnect
Someone on another forum decided to handwave the enemies materializing from nowhere as Varric being the worst DM in the world. So basically, he's telling Cassandra these stories of EPIC BATTLES and he just doesn't know when to stop.
Varric: That's when ten more bandits fell out of the sky!
Varric: And four of them exploded into abominations. The flamey kind that disappear as soon as you get to them and then attack your mages!
Hawke: Goddammit, Varric.
Cassandra:
This. I don't think it was intentional on the developers' part, since this kind of gameplay/story disconnect is pretty much the norm for almost every videogame ever made. DA2 is just lucky in that it has a particularly awesome way of handwaving it that is PURE GENIUS.
I can forgive all of it because I just imagine it is Varric getting a bit overzealous with his retelling. Abominations probably were horrifically dangerous creatures and one could bring down an entire squad of templars. Varric just decided it would make for a better story if Hawke fought seven of them at one time instead of one.

Also, I love the idea of Varric as a DM. You know he would insist on being the DM, too. I desperately want a comic or something now in the style of
DM of the Rings, or a comic with Varric reading out his descriptive backstory and getting SO INTO IT, while the rest of the crew gets bored.
