It's a conversation with Fergus's son in origins right before Fergus leaves and Oren gets killed. Oren wants a sword and somewhere in the conversation Fergus says something like "Don't worry Oren you'll get to see a sword up close real soon."

And to spell it out even more, Oren certainly does see a sword up close.  Probably when he got stabbed with one.

Still catching up on the thread, but had to reply to this:

I don't know if LeggyWillow is around (or was it Threeparts, I know they were both collaborators on the concept) but there was a great post about a Pounce DLC where you get to play as Pounce trying to find Anders. They had companions and romances and everything. I would so pay for it.

The Homeward Bound DLC, yes! Featuring Ser Pounce-a-lot, his lady love Mittens, and companions Boo and Barkspawn in an epic adventure spanning two countries.

From page 172 to 174 of the old thread.

Yes, I have it bookmarked, okay. I want that DLC so bad:crying:

So much is on my to-do list haha D:

The quote 'One could make all kinds of explosives, using simple household items.' comes to mind.

Oh god... PLEASE PLEASE draw this one, its just too good to pass up!

If you are swamped with work, I'd volunteer to draw it. - I WANT THIS  VISUALIZED.

I also have the epic endscene in mind, or Anders hitting himself...

Or Tyler in his awkward great fluffy outfit he wears in the hotelroom.... that's even kinda mage-style, isn't it?

Oh, you know, I did catch that at some point. And then I chuckled blackly, as I recall. Bioware=wicked. Or maybe it's just Gaider.

It might be easier to just do some Photoshopping... sticking Justice's head on Brad Pitt's character and Anders' onto Edward Norton's.  Hawke can be Marla; +5 bonus points if it's male Hawke.  +15 bonus points if Meredanders is Marla.
I would do it but I don't have any kind of image editing software, and no skill to use it even if I did.  :crying:  So maybe some Photoshop savvy person will decide to give us some Dragon Age Fight Club screenies.

So I just read this for the first time and loved it.  Kirkwaller's Guide to Social Justice
A well thought out post with explained and supported ideas.  Anyway I wonder if a lot of my problems with DAII ahve come from the Low/High/Heroic Fantasy disparity.

I really like his commant on Anders being a High Fnatasy character stuck in a Low Fantasy world.  The truth of his statement really hit home for me.  However I admit I side almost fully with Anders because I think I am a High Fantasy person stuck in a Low Fantasy world as well.

I know, i found the low/high Fantasy thing interesting too. And I kind of give the creators props for doing their best to beat the "high fantasy" ideals out of me by the final act. When anders blew the chantry i finally made the switch from "I've got this and can make this turn out the way i want" to "F this, i'm just going to try and make it out of here in once piece". My first introduction to low fantasy and it was quite an emotional ride.

@thebrute7 I loved that article, but I kinda disagree with the assessment of Anders being a High Fantasy character stuck in a low fantasy world. JUSTICE is a high fantasy character and Anders is constantly struggling to bring him down to reality. Still, I adored the article. Really insightful stuff.

I concede your point.  Poor Anders/Justice.  Fade spirits don't workout well in our world do they?  I think it is their lack of sense of time.  They want to act NOW NOW NOW and don't realize that things can be made worse by acting at the wrong time.

EDIT: My Hawke is stuck in High Fantasy mode too...  The pain is coming.

I think that is why Anders and Justice are both very tragic in their own ways.  Anders, who once knew how the world worked and only wanted freedom for himself finds himself being driven to madness by an entity who only understands black and white world. In the fade, there is just evil and good.  Demons and Spirits.  Justice or Injustice.  In the real world?  Not so much.

I think Anders speaks to this when he says Justice wants to kill every templar Anders sees.  Anders knows why in this world it is not wise to do so, but Justice?

Justice would murder them all if he could.  Can you imagine having that constantly in your head for seven years while you see abuse, oppression, and killing of mages all around you?  Which is why I don't think Anders is justified in what he did, but godness, I can see why he finally stopped resisting.

I have to give DAII points for that, at least. As the game progressed my Hawke (and I) felt more like Aveline after each quest. "I can fix this. I can fix this. Surely I can fix thi- *Boom* ... I can't fix this."

And I have to be honest, not being able to fix it was quite an emotional punch to the gut. I thought for sure that Hawke would be able to save his mother. Yeah... not so much. But of course, I didn't learn my lessen after that, no no.

Even though I knew something horrible was going to happen at the end of the game with Anders (wasn't spoiled, just had that "feeling"), Hawke (I) still believed it could be fixed. It was only after the Chantry went up in flames that I realized, "Yeah, I can't fix it... but at least I can get out with my lover... I hope."

DAII had a lot of issues, but it did a lot of things right. :3

I agree. Anders said his coexistence with Justice is a madness - it is in this
situation where the cliché: "the spirit made me do it" could be true.
But I believe it is becoming more difficult for Anders to resist, when although
it is thanks to Hawke he is gaining more control, he could not ignore the logic
of blowing up the Chantry. I find myself at a middle ground with Anders'
actions. The Chantry wasn't going to step in, they were just going to stand
back and let all hell break loose; Sebastian said the bravest thing one can do
in war is to stand back. I disagree, especially when an oppressed people are
suffering greatly, and turning to controversial means to survive. I was one of
those gamers who thought we were going to save everyone by one simple act, and
the next day everything would be sunshine and giggles. By the end of Act 3, I
was all "**** it" and just wanted to get Anders out of there.
However, I also strongly disagree with Anders' actions because it was not
justice - it was "removing the obstacle" to get him to his goal.
Anders will have to live with that reality for the rest of his life; justice
does make sense in your head, but if you try to act it out in the real world,
you may as well try shoving a square peg into a round hole. (Thanks Isabela for
bring up that justice/idea conversation.)

I don't feel the "I can't fix this." was doing it right. That said it is personal preference.

I have to say I started having a vast emotional detachment on my second playthrough. Origins always makes me cry when Alistair kills the Archedemon, I always feel horrible when I have to kill Conner, I grin madly when I kick Loghain's behind, I scream at Howe when he shows up on the screen, I roll my eyes when Cailian speaks.

DA2 made me cry one time. And upon seeing that scene now...the only thing I can do is facepalm and scoff in disgust.  Anders rivalry path also pulled some sympathy strings (which were placed by bewilderness from him defaulting to the friendship path).

DAO was far more emotional to me.
