I thought it was fairly easy to be a big damn hero and 'win' Origins. o_o

Is it almost made up by the fact that Issy seems to think Jethan and Zev are similar?

I think she's referring to herself in that line.

I could send Alistair to sleep with Morrigan a few dozen times, watch him run off to kill the Archdemon at the cost of his life, exile him, betray him, viciously stab him in the face if that was an option, and probably not be as moved.

DA2 (and Anders I suppose) ruined me. In a good way.

The only thing worse (in a good way) than Anders is the knowledge that if the Warden romanced Zev and dies, Zevran turns down sex with Isabela. That is sad beyond words.

Totally derailing the topic here, but - I hear you can sleep with Jethan, but my Hawke has never been given the option to accept the offer.

Why?! T.T

Picking Harrowmount my first time through showed me how wrong winning was.

And really? Oh, I'm so heartbroken! I thought it was a Zev reference. I was so happy. I love Zev.

You have to talk to him a second time.
I usually do it after I find the hand. ^_^

I loved DA2, but I'm a huge sucker for games that deliberately go off the tracks. I have no pressing desire at all to be a valiant hero or save the world or influence the plot or even be relevant, provided the narrative is interesting and/or goes into some pretentious meta **** for me to eat up, and I feel DA2 accomplishes that. Hawke really is basically The Ishmael to Anders, but I actually really like that.

I actually ended up a lot more attached to Hawke than I ever did any of my wardens, because my incessant desire to metagame pretty much ruined any roleplaying potential for me in DAO. I'd always choose the third option, spam Morrigan with dog bones until she sleeps with me 5 minutes out of Lothering, etc. DA2 forced me to pace things and shoved bad decisions/non-decisions on me and while there were less options, they were impactful. The voice helped me stop thinking about numbers a little too.

Who rules Orzammar is probably the most DA2-esque tough choice. I always pick Bhelen. In the long run I think a few years of near-dictatorship or ... whatever the codex described it as... is better than isolationism and obnoxious tradition. Any chance to **** up tradition is <3

I love Zevran too <3

yesssssssssssss

I feel good. I made this connexion to a friend of mine, the bromantic life partner, who I keep trying to convince to play my vidja games.

A Ishmael that gets to harpoon Ahab's great white whale, which is even better.

They don't stick with me though. They bore me. Not winning at the end of the day and cutting my losses is something I do every single day. I don't want to do it in my games as well. The story felt disconnected, many events pointless and Hawke staying in Kirkwall felt forced. (to me anyway).

See, some of my Wardens getting involved in the whole Blight mess felt more forced to me.  Not for all of them, but it limited your RPing concepts in a similar way, IMO.  For example, it was hard to come up with a real reason why my Dalish Warden would hang around after Ostagar.  She was racist and jaded and hated Alistair at first (until she fell in looooove but that's another story) and Duncan probably had to drag her kicking and screaming all the way to Ostagar.  She was a proud Dalish through and through who would have preferred to die tainted among her people.  So I had to alter my RPing concept a little more with her (i.e., ignore it) in order to finish the game.

I know that "SAVING THE WHOLE WORLD!" is a pretty compelling reason for a BDH to complete the narrative, but when you're trying to come up with characters that fit in the shades-of-grey world Origins attempted to establish, it was harder to justify.

You could RP a Hawke that stayed in Kirkwall without limiting your RPing concepts, in a way.  You could stay because you were a selfless person who wanted to help the city and refused to give up, or you could RP one that was ambitious and selfish and only saw opportunities for money and power.  You could RP a Hawke who wants to leave but stays due to their family and friends (like I usually do).

Staying in Kirkwall seemed a bit forced to me too at first, since my first thought was "Let's get the heck outta this crazy place!", but after thinking about it, I can come up with a much wider variety of Hawkes (personality-wise) with the motivation to stay than a variety of Wardens willing to embrace a hopeless suicide mission.  (Okay, sure it's not hopeless or necessarily suicidal in the end, but the Warden certainly doesn't know that.)

Durr, Anders is Raiden. He's the whiny gay effeminate one that no one likes!

I could stand to see more Hawke butt, though.

Or... ANDERS IS OTACON. He accidentally a Metal Gear. And has a total mancrush on his beardy companion mmmyes. Also, DO YOU THINK LOVE CAN BLOOM EVEN ON THE BATTLEFIELD?

Yeah, my wardens all ended up being GO WARDEN except for Aedan who was doing it because he wanted to be King and who wants to be king in a country that's blighted? I had a goody-goody Cousland girl and a "meh, whatever" Surana male who was in it for the sex and because he thought Alistair was kinda nice and deserved to be king. Also he enjoyed being an elf mage who got to order people around. That was TOPS.

And I loved Origins, but I love DA2 far, far more, because it made me think more.

Yeah but Hawke's whole family can be dead and he/she can have no true friends in Kirkwall. (And instead a bunch of enemies and tentative rivalries). Yes the CE can sell his/her family off but that was a bit to...crazy for me to RP properly.

So for me it was much harder to justify staying in Kirkwall.

Plus to me the place was a hellmouth. Everything that could possibly go wrong there did. I can't roleplay my Hawkes being willing to stay there. Especially not when they had the means to leave. That's how all of my Wardens stay in Fereldan. They don't really have the means to go anywhere else without aid (why is everyone with you? Because you're trying to stop the blight! Without that you're on your own.) and Loghain's soldiers are hunting for them. Far safer (not to mention Alistair and everyone else would ditch them) and wiser to try to combat the blight with allies. Traversing around Fereldan alone with a bounty on their head would just get them killed.

Trying to leave Fereldan would've been extremely difficult for most of my Wardens. Plus they were already tainted and had no clue how to find the other Wardens. And by the time they can go somewhere else they've already finished a few treaties.

That said I do understand to expand my roleplaying views. I already got told that.  It just...I find myself twisting my character motivations in oddways in DA2 vs DAO.

Why wasn't I trying to expose templar abuses? I dunno. Hawke just decided to do nothing.

Why wasn't Hawke trying to garner support for mages? I dunno. Hawke just decided to do nothing.

It's just...jarring.

And I never really had the dalish issue seeing as I mostly played HN and CE. My HNs either stayed to get back their land or kick Howe and Loghains asses. And my CE protected their families.

Edit: Ack. This is just my personal views though. Sorry if it seems like I"m jumping down your throat.

Anders is like, reverse Raiden, what with the taking a character everyone liked and turning him into the whiny gay effeminate one no one likes but the 5 fangirls on livejournal that spend all day writing 70,000 word long essays about the game

The Reverse Raiden sounds like fun.

Derp.

I hereby declare myself one of those five fangirls. I've already got a livejournal. Time to start writing essays.

I had characters like that, too. Like my ultra-traditionalist dwarven noble, who was the trolliest troll who ever trolled. Seriously. I think he honestly got off on being a complete and utter bastard to everyone he came across.
...I had way too much fun playing hin, too. >.>
And then there was my Dalish warden, who really was only stopping the Blight because... well, c'mon, who wants Blight all up in their crib? (Granted, she did mellow out during the course of the game, but in the beginning she could have gone toe-to-toe with Velanna in terms of ****iness.)
My only two even remotely 'nice' characters were my Amell and my Cousland. And the latter was just nice because he was incredibly lazy, and simply couldn't be arsed to be a jerk. Buttering up people = others doing your work for you = more time sitting around doing Jack ****.

It's more fun not playing the hero. I'd be the Lancer all the time if more video games let me get away with it.
As Varric says, it's much more advantageous to be the power behind the throne.

....

I just realized this post had nothing at all to do with Anders. Just ignore me. I'll be over here.
Sitting in the corner.

Heyyy I liked Raiden.

Of course, it helped that I played MGS in this order: 2,1,3,4. So I had no attachment to Snake at the time. If you do it properly you probably won't like him very much. Poor guy.
