Oh you know the ferelden mages weren't even allowed to go for walks in the courtyard after someone tried to make a run for it? I wonder if that was Anders :D

Wouldn't be surprised. He tends to ruin it for all other mages.XD

The closest I have to that is Leon. But he's not terrifying in the in your face way. Oh no. He'll smile tell you what you want to hear be there for you, and before you know it you're completely ensnared in his trap and never even realize it. You start doing things you wouldn't usually consider because he wants it, just a smile or a frown from him will make decisions for you because before you know it you crave approval from him.

I'm not sure whether to make him a very charismatic warrior or a bloodmage.

And he cares about no one other than himself. You'd never know it from talking to him though.

BLOOD MAGE!  BLOOD MAGE!  *waves little maleficarum banner*

Natale Hawke would like Leon   She's a lot like Azula in that she can be all reasonable and polite one minute, and just radiate menace the next.  As the game goes on and things get more out of hand with the mages, she slowly drops the mask of courtesy.  By the end of Act 3, she is terrifying to anyone who even thinks of crossing her.

Your Hawke sounds a lot like mine (from my story).
Evalyn is a very nice person most of the time, but you threaten something she loves.   **** just hit the fan!

Chances are that your Hawke is a better person; I don't think I'd ever call Natale "nice" in even the loosest definition :)  But yes, mine also has the crazy overprotective Mama Bear streak.

Maybe instead of the Circle of Magi, they could make it like a boarding school.
Supervised field trips, visiting home for the holidays (the local Chantry can keep a quiet eye on them if they wish).
They could even try training mages and templars together, and maybe partnering them up to encourage co-existance?

And after all that there's a final exam (a.k.a. The Harrowing). Or you can choose Tranquility or death.
Maybe they should create some kind of license, showing the mage passed and is considered safe enough for society.

Mages could work as enchanters, mercenaries, scholars or healers or something...

The Circles are necessary, even past the Harrowing the threat of demons and blood magic is ever present. I do think allowing them to have a bit of fun every now and then won't hurt them though. Like a visit home for good behavior. You can't get rid of the dangers that come with being a mage but you can make their lives in the tower easier while still keeping your pimp hand strong.

Thing is doesn't Hawke's mum mention seeing Bethany in the Circle? I could have sworn she did.

Does she? I don't I ever got that line. But if that happened, it would probably be due to Hawke's status or something, it's definitely not commonplace.

This is utterlyhorrible but I'm laughing hysterically. Damn you!

You think that's bad? I was thinking about the benefits to having a Tranquil Anders as a bed mate. The Japanese are on to something with these love dolls.

I don't know if she mentions it or if it's in a letter Bethany sends you. She mentions mother comes to visit her.

I like to think that when the Viscount asks my Hawke for help with the Qunari in Act 2 she dmeands in exchange that the Viscount get the templars to allow her and her mother to visit Bethany occasionally.  But my Hawke is that kind of person :P  Wants the impoissible and gets it.

There's no reason the local Chantry can't keep an eye on them. There seem to be Templars in every settlement.
Caging people in a tower is not strictly necessary.

What do they do with Templars after the lyrium finally gets to their brain, anyway...?

Anyway, I really hope the mage situation really gets somewhere in future DA games. I can kinda see it as one of those conflicts that never gets solved unfortunately.

Apparently they all retire to Val Royeaux, as per the Templer in front of the Denerim Chantry in Origins about his older partner.

Yeah, I hope in some future content (DLC, next game, whatever) we get to shape how things go a bit. It's such a huge thing.

...lovely.
How is a paranoid, lyrium-addled junkie with a sword supposed to be safer than an abomination?

(Yes, I know on a danger scale, Templars are well bellow abominations, but that wasn't my point.)

I seriously want a series of Anders' escape attempts. Narrated by him.

But now I feel bad for mages like Finn and with starting the whole revoluationary deal and all.

It's certainly more feasible to keep them in one location rather than several. Templars are on a payroll and it would not be wise to spread them out all over Thedas. I imagine they're income is from the Chantry's coffers but without knowing exactly how large those coffers are it's hard to say. Spreading themselves too thin would be unwise and the only remedy would be to hire more. It's not as simple as allowing mages to pass their Harrowing and allowing them to run free when one could still become an abomination and kill a large number of people relatively easily.
