This sentiment just goes to show how the 'mages shouldn't be treated as people' rubs off from the game.

Yes they need a certain amount of policing, but dammit mages are human beings, they may have a talent, a dangerous one at that but treating them like naughty children or less than human is not the way to go.

Why should they only get to see their family for good behaviour? Why should the chantry preach they're evil and breed fear into the populous? Why shouldn't they be allowed basic human rights?
Police mages by all means, they can be dangerous but the circles as they stand are wrong and what you have written is barely even a step up from that.

This. All of this. All of this times 10.

Teach mages Hogwarts style? Yes. Enlist mages to be a force when evil mages need to be delt with? yes. The circle and teaching fear and shame and treating them as less then human? no.

That Tranquil Anders art... that's gotta be the most depressing thing I have ever seen. EVER.

Because in their reality to underestimate a mage is a luxury you cannot afford.

You know what would be awesome? Besides just re-creating the Circles as universities or boarding schools Hogwarts-style... is to also set up either entire mage communities or mage-friendly communities. Seriously. Mages can then have families, be productive... maybe get hired out for their talents (healers are obvious... maybe force mages could aid in construction work, etc). Have a police force of non-abusive, sane templars to keep the shady mages in check.

I think it's totally viable. Why the Chantry would be opposed to something like that is beyond me. Maker, my day job is soul-sucking enough, I volunteer to run the first mage community of its kind! Image IPB

So, Tranquility sounds curious to me. And not so bad. I would get a lot more work done *laughs* Which would be nice. It just sounds interesting.

But then you wouldn't want to hang around on this thread with us!  No more depravity!

Yeah.

Hrm. I guess I wouldn't mind. I'd be contently doing work. Too bad you can't go Tranquil for a little while then get out of it. I mean, it'd be like a vacation.

The Tranquil don't mind it, but they aren't capable of being bothered by anything.  At most, they feel "uncomfortable", like when abominations try to kill them in the Ferelden Circle.  I doubt they feel joy or love.  I often think I could do without emotional pain, anger, depression, but if that's the price for joy and love, I'll deal.  I wouldn't deny Tranquility to those that want it, and fully understand what it entails, but forcing it on someone, ugh.  I think abusive templars should be made Tranquil, as an example to the others.  Death's too good for them.  They couldn't runecraft nor enchant, but I'm sure they could catalog and sort and mop all day.  I know!  They could teach the Intro to Ethics course to new recruits.  "And this is the penalty for raping the novices." *points to forehead*

If only Thedas's mages lived in a world where corruption only came in the form of greed and a desire for power. Perhaps it could be as lovely as the world Rowlings built.

Ugh, i would rather be dead then tranquil. life isn't life withouth emotions.

Though i was thinking the other day that if an apostate mage were to brand the tranqual sign onto their forhead and pretend to be tranquil when around people, that would be apretty good disguise.

They wouldn't be in charge is why, they want to keep a rein on Mages, they want the power over them.

I don't think a majority of the devs were aware of it. Luka wasn't. Some of the posters from the Anders crisis thread did inform him about it though.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer for the next patch.

My sister pointed out the other day that even Ezio (Assassin's creed) hates templars.  It made me :D

seriously though, don't think i would even wish tranquility on evil templars (plus can non-mages be made tranquil?)

Odd, it's usually been instant for me.  It is working now anyway.  Here's a shameless link, Shameless Plug. I need feedback on my stuff. Not getting feedback makes me sad. Image IPB  P.S. the link is straight to chapter 9 which is pretty much all Anders.  It'll make more snese if you read the rest however.  Ch7 and 8 have Andersy bits as well.

I suspect they can.  Tranquility doesn't actually have anything to do with magic itself, it just cuts the person off from the fade, and thus their emotions.  And personally I think Tranquility is too good for rapists, but I can't think of anything worse to do to them.

I think so, yes. If I am not mistaken the personal assistant of Meredith wasn't a mage, right? Everyone has a connection to the Fade, I suppose you can severe it from non-mages too...

I mean. I dunno. It just sounds -- tranquil. Calm.

It wouldn't work like they show it, mind, since so much of what humans are is our emotions and we have little inthe way of "rational" thought. But the idea is nice. Going through life, level, being always still on the inside.

I bet Tranquil make great assistants. There right when the ol' wrist sundial hits the top of the hour.
