I'm not convinced Owain is fully human anymore.  Maybe as human as someone with extreme Asperger's or autism?

Having families is fine, but even if you were to build communities they would still need to be policed. I suppose we can have mage reservations but then they'd just build casinos.

Karl was not a willing subject but at the same time I think he gives a perspective of what being tranquil is like and why it should be undertaken lightly, even if one does want it. 

Because not everyone enjoys the anxiety that comes from uncertainty. There are people who like to be led, to have a clear understanding and path to follow. Owain seems to appreciate this in his own capacity where he saw himself chaotic before. What works for one does not work for all of course.

I'm also reminded of the young woman in the Circle origin story who is terrified of her Harrowing, and gratefuly embraces Tranquility if you suggest it.  I wish both she and Owain had been given other ways to deal with their fear and anxiety.  Councelors, drugs, something, so Tranquility wasn't the *only* way to stop the fear.  Still give them the option, since some may prefer Tranquility over death (even if I don't), but make it more of an actual choice.

It wouldn't work like they show it, mind, since so much of what humans are is our emotions and we have little inthe way of "rational" thought. But the idea is nice. Going through life, level, being always still on the inside.

I'm trying to see it like that but i don't know if i can. it doesn't sound nice... sounds like hell. but then, i can't really separate feeling calm and peaceful from the emotions of those feelings. Tranquil sounds like... a void. Still because it's empty not still because you're at peace or fulfilled.

Peace is a pretty empty feeling, isn't it?

You just know the Tranquil can count cards.  And Tranquil dealers can always spot you cheating.  Don't get me started on the templar bouncers.  Don't even try reading the dealer's mind with blood magic, they will cut you down right at the table.  But the mage showgirls (and show "girls") are fabulous!

Alright ladies and gents, I'm bowing out for tranquility discussion #2 of the day. Too depressing and some of the real world comparisons are getting sketchy. Also, I think my husband's tolerance for Anders and the lovely Anders thread may be tested if I keep him awake late into the night typing here. =P

I totally get it, sounds super romantic to me too.  In this play, Anders is mostly support role with arcane shield and whatnots, but I'm romancing Merrill and I love 2 mage parties so... yeah.  And Varric doesn't help matters at all, lol.

I haven't had any problems with Anders or my ranged attackers kill-stealing from my warrior Hawke.  She is a BEAST, and usually my ranged guys only have time to mop up the stragglers after she Scythes + Whirlwhinds into a crowd.  Reaver + Berserker FTW.

But I'm sure if you asked Karl in the same state he would have said the same thing.  He, in fact, said it to Anders before Justice came back and gave him a part of the fade.  Traquils are made to be tranquil with whatever treatment they recieve.   The tranquil that was sexually abused by Alrik was not disturbed by her treatment and agreed with it.  If she had a piece of the fade again, I don't think she would be so ok with that.

They'll follow rules and that includes who they're told to follow. There's at least one that says they answer to Cullen so Alrik had to have circumvented the system somehow. And that's a problem with upper management in the end. If you're talking about the normal tasks that are expected of a Tranquil there is no problem.

The part we see as questionable is the "Maybe as human as someone with extreme aspergers or autism." You're basically saying someone with a disability, who may lack the ability to understand empathy is less of a person because of it.

Exactly. The "maybe as human" is a "wat" you make it sound as though they're somehow less human than eveyone else. 

That's probably not what you meant. But that's how it came off. And that's why I jumped down your thoat.
