Meh, I'm in the minority here in that it doesn't bother me that Anders is more cautious to get into a relationship with a female than a male. In my opinion, Anders can relate more to another man than he can as a woman and has a better understanding of how a potentially botched romance can affect another man rather than a woman. Makes perfect sense to me that he wouldn't be willing to risk 'hurting' a woman due to a relationship snafu because he really doesn't "know" how women react or feel in situations like that. I'd imagine his experience with being in an actual non-casual relationship with a woman is sorely lacking (what with having been on the run from people his entire life and all) so I think it's completely in character for him to act as such.

It's mostly the "No!" after the, "I can take care of myself." that raises my hackles. I work in a male dominated field. I can most assuredly take care of myself, but I've had to fight "the establishment" pretty hard at times. I shouldn't let real life color my gaming experience, but it does.

Oh come on... stupid top again.
Since I'm annoyed right now:

Luckily I liked sarcastic Lady Hawke. I did just the minimum romance option because the game needed as much funny added as possible.

See why couldn't the fem Hawke get something like that? It would have made sense, and not so weighty.  I sort of feel like male Hawke was getting more insight on Anders.  but that's just me.

He got tons more! F!Hawke never got to hear about him being ripped away from his little village by the Templars or the extra bits about Karl.

You can hear it but you have to take the sarcastic or aggressive options offhand to get them.
Male Hawke has much for flexible dialogue to work with.

Well that sucks.  I didn't play my canon Hawke that way, she was the to good for her own good sort.  Kinda upseting male Hawke dialog is so flexible.

I have a hard time even picking the sarcastic options with Anders, other than some aggressive options when I'm going all "kill templars good"... but some of his responses are so adorable to sarcastic and aggressive options that it's hard to resist also. I love Anders and I want to be good to him but I need to hear crazy things like "don't threaten me little girl" and see the crazy faces he makes at times when Hawke is being inappropriate...

I art torn.

No I agree, it does make sense for him to be emotionally intense, but how early it happens I'm still not convinced by. I will admit, when I first played the game, I was having a very hard time connecting "new Anders" with "Awakening Anders", it wasn't the change in VA or that the humour wasn't quite as prominent as before (I mention this latter point simply because there seems to be complaints elsewhere in the forum of "where's funny Anders gone???"), but the fact that he was so intense it just didn't sit right. But reflecting on it led me to the conclusion you've summarised, it does make sense, it just didn't (and still doesn't) make sense to me that it came out at that point in time. In particular I'm thinking of "And that will kill me as surely as the Templars" that doesn't work for me. i.e. I can buy into his feelings being intensified, I find it harder that he's formed an emotional attachment like that that causing Hawke heartache would be that devastating to him already.

Gah, it's past midnight here so sorry if that's all over the place!

Well, Anders did kill Karl quite recently when he gives that line, and Hawke did just go through a very emotionally harrowing experience with him.  I think just the thought of falling in love with another person, especially since he seems to react strongly to Hawke from the get-go, has him a bit panicky.

I think that his reaction to Hawke is different from his reaction to any other person he's ever had in his life and that Hawke, in the little bit of time that he gets to know him/her sparks something inside of him that hasn't been sparked in a long long time, even before Justice became a part of him.  That being intensified by Justice leads to a very quick attachment.

If you've ever read The Godfather, I equate it to Michael, figuratively, being hit by the lightening bolt the first time he sees Apollonia.  Anders sees Hawke, whether on friendship or rivalry, and instantly wants him/her with an intensity he's never felt before.

It's kinda corny, but I think it fits for new Anders to fall in love at first sight.  Image IPB

I don't really have much of a problem with the "warning off" stuff, although I do wish he'd done the warning to m!Hawke as well. The same as I wish F!Hawke had gotten the talk about Karl. M!Hawke gets so much more dialogue, and I think it's possible that they put the warning off stuff in there to ... fill in ? IYKWIM. And they didn't give us the Karl warning because they were scared of frightening people off with his gayness. Which kind of seems redundant, given the backlash we've seen now.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if not mentioning Karl for female Hawke was a way to appease people like that one chick who was ready to boycott BioWare if there were no 'purely straight' romances. But it could also be an aspect of his character? I dunno. It seems to be the case that regardless of whether Anders tells Hawke about his past relationship with Karl or not, it still happened.

...What? Sure she does.
I can't remember what dialogue path I used, exactly, but I distinctly remember hearing the whole 'Templars ripped me away, dad didn't give a ****, etc etc' talk as a FemHawke.
He doesn't mention Karl though, that's true. Which is a damn shame, since I would have liked to hear about it without having to create an entirely different character.

The "...in as much detail as you fancy" line makes me put on my squeejuicepants. Heeee

Also, dude Hawke's delivery of the "If they want you, ~*~*~they'll have to come through me~*~*~" line just KILLS me. I love Boulton so much, lol.

I hate blonder Anders though, and flesh colored stubble Anders >:|

Boulton is half the reason I hope Hawke is the protagonist of DA3, irritating party resets and "Anders's 45 second cameo beats out all of the other romance options combined" aside. Oh, how I suffer for not having been born with the voice of such a dashing queen :crying:

Male Hawke is too sexy for his own good.
I get flustered just seeing other people's videos... I can't stand all that sexiness an entire playthrough.

I 100% agree.  And for both Anders AND my canon Hawke, it was like being struck by lightning.  She felt strongly about him the moment she laid eyes on him, though it took a bit for her to decide whether she liked him or couldn't stand him.

Oh forget that.  My canon Hawke was hooked from the moment she heard about him.  Helping the poor?  Curing people?  Oh my heart, my poor heart!
It didn't help that he was deliciously hot to boot too.

I like them about equally, but I slightly prefer FemHawke/Anders too.  She has such wonderful mischevious smiles when she's egging Anders on.

Of course not.

There's plenty of steamy Anders loving to go around. <3

Provided you're called Hawke over course. Everyone else need not apply.

Why would it be blasphemy? It's a preference, not a religious doctrine of buttsecks that you can't cross or something, lol.

Het is totes nasty. You'd be giving Anders cooties.

(but no, I think the issue is just the dialogue differences coming from Anders, not Hawke's genitalia.)

People say Anders is just Hawkesexual but I think with most on this forum it's more like Hawke is Andersexual.

And Lo, Anders laid eyes on ManHawke's flesh, and saw that buttsecks was good.

Nah. My canon Hawke (icon!) is pretty inseparable from Anders, I just envy the male dialogue. I love Boulton's voice work in the game, I just prefer playing female badasses in games that will let me. I also prefer Lady Hawke in romances with all the companions except Fenris.

Thirded. Gaynders isn't nearly as creepy and is overall much more enjoyable romance than with LadyHawke.

I must say, though, I'm not overly bothered by it. Gives me an excuse to play more male characters for a change, especially with the great VA. And it's not like there's been an excess of good m/m focused romances in games, anyway, so a little disparity makes up for the years of no gay option.

Why does there have to be any disparity? And why should it be at the expense of predominately female players? I'm genuinely glad that they made the s/s relationships in DA2 good and distinctive, but for that one conversation the difference in quality and meaning is so vast and it didn't have to be. Add in "insulting to women" and it's...not even a little cool, since female gamers haven't exactly been catered to.
