So it is running out of RAM and not dealing with it well. This is strange as people with 8G is still seeing it. So from your error it more seems strictly memory related. Not that an installer should need this much memory but it does.

Best chance is probably to quit all open apps and try to free as much memory as possible in the hope that it will work. :-(

Yeah, it seems like it. I've consistently seen it die after gobbling up around 3GB worth of ram. So maybe it in some cases is eating up ram indefinitely, or maybe it for some reason wants to load all the 9GBs into ram at once. That would explain why my 4GB system and someone with 8GB RAM would get the same result. This could also explain why you got it to work, Rimfrost, since you according to your sig have got 16GB RAM.

Although I run DA2 just fine in bootcamp, I'm kinda bummed that it won't even install on OS X :?

Other people have successfully installed it so it's more a glitch then anything else.

Then again if you have an iMac then upgrading RAM is cheap at www.macsales.com. I went to 16G for like $200 ("needed" it for work).

I think most people are successful in installing it on the Mac but on some machines for whatever reason it's gobbling up RAM (bad installer! bad!)

I'm still considering going win7 bootcamp and high-res but haven't made the leap yet. Perhaps next week when I have more game time

It a 32 bit program so it's not going to be able to use more than 4 G memory whatever it does, probably less, usually 2.5 - 3 G is the limit. It does seem like you're running out of memory, and excessive use of mmap is a quick way to do that.

Not easy to come up with a solution though. Perhaps if you have a large enough memory stick you could install it there and copy over. You could try to find another Mac to do it on. The internet connection is not required until the first time you launch the game.

Not really sure why there even is an installer. As far as I can tell, the only thing it installs is the application bundle. But I guess that's a different discussion.

Edit: Oh, it also has you entering the registration number. So guess it's not strickly only copying the files. Still might be worth a shot to do it on another Mac. Also make sure to copy the ~/Library/Application Support/Dragon Age II folder if it was created.

Thanks for the suggestion Jhime, I'l try installing it on another mac to see if it's just being glitchy with my particular setup (I've got an iMac 11,1).

What's interesting is that it seems like the system isn't freeing up any inactive memory for the installer, isn't it supposed to do that if the free memory isn't cutting the mustard?

Edit: It worked!
The installer completed on my old macbook pro (which only has 2GB of RAM, so the memory issue doesn't seem to be the main problem) and I just copied over the dragon age 2 folder and everything works as it should.

Fast running out of ideas here...tried to install multiple times in admin account - didnt work; created new account and tried to install it on that - didnt work. Also copied installer onto desktop and tried that on both accounts, also failed. Tried the 'Sudo' command listed on page 1 of this thread, this also failed to install it. I just cant seem to get past the "gathering files for installation...." bit. Have opened a ticket with EA, (who initially told me to set up new user account). Does anyone have any other method that has worked? Will update once Ea respond....

Yay! No rhyme or reason but it just installed on the separate log in account I set up. I had the launcher copied onto the desktop from trying to install it last night. I deleted it off, then reinserted the disc and installed the game straight of the disc using the inbuilt installer. That was the eighth time I tried to install it on the new log in account, and it worked; I must have tried over 25 times on my admin account, to no avail. Good luck to everyone trying to successfully install it, just keep persevering I guess!

I can understand the frustration. I have no idea how it can be solved. Clearly a bug in the installer :-(.

I assume your os-X etc is all up to date?

Have you installed any other firewalls or anti virus program or anything like little snitch? Perhaps you can disable anything like that for the time being (not convinced it will help).

As I said I doubt any of these ideas will help. Just listing what I would try.
Perhaps try to install it in a none-default location?

This is getting ridiculous. I have probably tried installing upwards of 25 times. How has this thread existed for 5 days without a Bioware response? Is this a joke?

After several failed attempts on 2011 MBP 15" (2720QM 4GB) I did notice that the installation aborted always around the same time. Activity Monitor revealed that this happened when the Used Memory reached 4 GB. Perhaps with 8 GB the same would happen, just a little bit later.

From S/W point of view, my guess is that the defect is in memory leakage.

hey there ! i'm really trying this whole day to install my game on a mac without any bit of success. nobody seems to have a real way to deal with the matter ... i totally agree with Seajaydub : even though i'm working in the video game industry and i totally get that "bugs happen" not even a word about that problem is a bit harsh to say the least.

To be clear on my problem it's pretty much the same as anyone else ... the game is trying to retrieve the files and crash after 2-3 min :s

I really hope somebody in charge will happen to answer accurately. For the others "Hang in there !" at least we are not alone bearing with that ;)

I had the same problem with my da2 dvd-version. First 2 times mysteriously failed. 3rd times the charm.
I remember having this same problem with Da:origins and that was directly from EAdm. Had to try install multiple times until it worked.
No other companys games have failed this regularly on me before :(

If you bought the game from gametreemac it's probably a good idea to report it there, since they are the same company as transgaming.

I got this tip sent in a private message not sure what it's worth but perhaps worth a try? It could make sense that if the disc is scratched perhaps the file sizes or similar gets read wrong? Not 100% sure as I would assume the reading of files would be done with error checking and retries but who knows?

So if you have Toast (or perhaps there is a demo) it could be worth a try. That said I think we have seen this issue for downloads as well...

I found your profile by reading the support forum for DA2 Installer issues. I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and ordered my copy from amazon and recieved it today only to be plagued by the same error on copying files. I found a solution... Something is faulty with the Original DISC. If you use Roxio Toast Titanium 11 and make an image of the disc and use error correction, it will rip the disc to an exact image of the original. Then it will install just fine. I sent this method to several other people who bought the game out here for mac and it worked instantly for them. Just wanted to pass this info along it wouldnt let me post in the forum.

Rimfrost, I believe that the "media incompatibility" is the real explanation.

For me, it was a coincidence that after increasing the memory from 4 to 8 GB the installation worked. Other observations: The memory consumption stayed under 3 GB. The DVD reader made very loud noise and the whole MBP vibrated "too much".

Now, I hope that there would be a touch screen for fast operations. Touchpad is useless for DA2 and mouse (MS 5000 Bluetooth) is tolerable. Too often, my archer walks to enemy instead shooting an arrow.

Cheers, Sotaratsu

Semi-related to the Toast solution, it seems that by using my USB external drive, I was able to install the game first time with no problems.

I had tried endlessly with the iMac's internal drive and it always crashed as outlined by others above (just after gathering files).

I am wondering if this error actually happens because the machine is having trouble reading the disks - perhaps the memory error is a red herring?

I'm glad the "toast" tip work as does installing it onto an external drive (guess you can drag it over afterwards right?)

Hi! First of all, I'm sorry for my probably bad English! :) I had a this problem. But I fixed it. I just created a .iso image from Dragon Age 2 disk, with Disk Utility. And installation goes well.

Hi!

Had the same problems and solved them quite easily. After three tries and a reboot I fired up the installer and did ONE thing different: I just clicked the harddisk-icon of my target disk instead of accepting the default folder ("programme" or "applications") or choosing a specific folder. The prompted directory changes from "programme" to "/volumes/macintoshHD/programme" and it worked like a charm!

I was able to fix mine by using a different dvd drive to install the game... there is a incompatibility either with the driver of mac and on windows in terms of the internal drive. I'm using a 27 imac
